I grew up in South Central in the 80s and if you take nothing else from what Montell is talking about know this: without black fathers the African-American community and culture will go extinct. Unlike Montell my father was not present and I joined the crips but left by the time I became an adult. Later I went to college and now have a good life. I made it without my father and know that my journey is rare.

I had a similar up bringing in the church. I grew up in the hood but the hood wasn't in me. That's not to say I was a punk because I had hands but I had a strong foundation and I knew right from wrong and what lines not to cross. A lot of my friends didn't have that. A number of them were killed or went to prison. Another thing. I was more scared of my 4"11 mom then any nigga in the streets. Lol

The young people loved it LOL.
