Brandon and Devorah do have a different foundation to their relationship, too. They've had years to become familiar with each other outside the context of a romantic relationship, without all the pressure that involves. There's certainly more intimacy after starting a relationship, so more opportunity to find something you don't like that you hadn't seen yet, but Devorah has already had a chance to screen Brandon for red flags, decide she likes him despite whatever about him is annoying, and get a general sense of his character. I bet that helps the entire thing feel more secure than just striking up a relationship with anyone.
