Chile was given its name by the Incas who respectfully called it Chili, ‘the country in the south’. Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament. The Plaza De Armas is the heart of the city and the historic centre of colonial Santiago that contains the city’s most important buildings. The city of Valparaiso or, Paradise Valley, is around a hundred and twenty kilometres from the capital of Santiago De Chile on the Pacific coast. The city’s development was closely connected with its harbour which brought it wealth and power. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, escalators have rattled up and down the steep hills of the harbour city with forty five hills flanking the bay, each of them covered with a number of tiny wooden huts. Only a short journey on a gravel road and the Atacama Desert begins. At its centre it is the driest desert in the world where the forces of nature have turned it into an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras, an area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern Polar sea. From the Atacama Desert in the north to as far as the stormy Tierra Del Fuego in the south, Chile is a country rich in contrast. Volcanoes, arid deserts, salt lakes, lively geysers, sandstone mountains and a cosmopolitan city. All of this is to be found in Chile, a country at the end of the world!

When I lived in Coyhaique, I met a girl from Antofagasta who had never seen water fall from the sky. She was visiting her abuela in the interior when Antofagasta had floods in the 80s. I remember her taking off her coat, looking to the sky, and watching the tears fall from her face. And I was with her. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life. She saw water fall from the sky for the first time in her life. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed.

I understand what you tried to say. When the girl could have seen to rain, she didn't see to rain in her city, Antofagasta, because she was visiting her grandmother in the interior at that moment. Therefore, when she was in Coyhaique she saw the rain for the first time. You were with her at that moment. It must have been very exciting for her and you. You are trying to express the emotion of that moment, but also you are trying to express the huge contrast of experiences that one chilean can have depending where that live. Thanks for sharing your incredible experience with us and make us think about our fantastic and crazy geography.

Know the value of items there and how to convert your money, alot of the stores dont have prices and some will charge more to people they can tell aren't from there.
Chile is one of the most beautiful countries as far as the land goes, but there is also alot of poverty and crime, so just be ready for that. Also the best driving of all the Latin American countries, in fact they drive better then Texas and New Jersey, but traffic moves differently there, so also be aware of that. Oh... and the Coca-Cola is all bland there, the Chinese restaurants there sell something, but it doesn't taste like Chinese food, and nothing "Spicy" there is spicy. Enjoy your trip, I hope you like speedbumps, and make sure you have a flashlight, because power goes out of it rains.

Well, Chile is safer country about crime, all records are same like Canada. No corruption issue, or rapts, no people try to kill U for your celphone. If well there are guys doing that.

This video shows mainly abandoned desert towns at Nort of Chile, and focus on poverty. Doesn´t show the main Cities of Antofagasta, Iquique, La Serena and Coquimbo. However it does shows the beauty of the South side.

I'm thinking about a temporary employment abroad after I graduate school. Would anyone recommend Chile? I also learned spanish in school, so I might not have that big problems with the language.
+Anna Sophie I know this is a very late reaction but yeah young western people who work here would be mostly in the cities like Santiago, in the north there are some but mostly like engineers for the observatories.
Please take note that living far away from home can be hard sometimes, i am from Coquimbo and lived in Belgium for a while but just went back because i could not feel at home.
+Anna Sophie yeah I live here its very safe, you can easily find a job, the salaries are not like Europe or the US but the cost of living is lower too
+Facundo Manquehue You're right about Chilean Spanish but it's no different to Australian, American and Scottish English. Each nation has its own slang and forms of saying things. You'd pick up the slang in no time.

Great video, but there are many more interesting places in Chile that weren't shown. Valdivia, which has massive forts and wooden villages. Laja Falls, which looks like a mini Iguacu. Juan Fernandez Islands. The Easter Island crater. Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas. The famous Antofagasta sea arch. The Marble Cave. Vina del Mar, known for its beaches and palaces. Barely showed Valparaiso. They showed too much Chiloe churches and too much of the arid north, which is the least interesting part of the country. Not bad though.
