At first I was put off by the T4 but after using it for a week it I’ve become more fond of it than my old trusty SAK. My Phillips screwdriver bit has held up and the knife blade has be great too. The one thing that I really appreciate after lots of use is not having to deal with finger nail nicks and every tool locks
Same. T4 is pretty awesome. I do wish it was a tad thinner (blame that on that sturdy lock mechanism), but it's honestly a sturdy & great quality tool.
I have the T4, and i love it. If Leatherman felt so inclined as to release one slightly thinner without the file and awl, and change the main blade to Magnacut, they would really have a winner.
Good video! Just speaking to size, since pocket real estate matters to many... Since the Leatherman is bit thicker, a good size comparison might be the Victorinox Deluxe tinker, adding useful small pliers. Or the Explorer, adding in line phillips, magnifying glass, corkscrew, and mini screwdriver. The corkscrew can also be used to store other things like Helix Tinder, Fire Ant ferro rod, etc. Plus scales with a pen is also not available on Leatherman.
I don’t live in 18th century France and I’ve used the corkscrew on my huntsman more than any other tool. When you’re with the ladies sitting by the levy with a fine bottle of wine, the huntsman has your back. FACT!
I'm sure people have noted this before, but most bottles used for craft beer and soda in the US are still crimp top. That's changing because a lot of craft beer has shifted to cans, but that could explain why all our companies historically love slapping bottle openers on everything. I just looked around my work office and counted 6 different bottle openers that have never been used.
I'm a Victorinox collector and fan, so when I say the T4 is in competition with my favorite daily-use SAK (Ranger), you know it's serious. There are some things that could be improved, but the overall package works well for me in my EDC.
I just saw that the new Leatherman Arc is supposed to be released in late october globaly. It definitly looks like it will easily be the best multitool ever to go into full production. excellent toolset on it
I got my free T 4 as a gift year before last and still carry it every day, I enjoy it. I havent ran into much to use the file on either but no issues with the other tools yet. Etsy used to sell 3D printed thumb studs for the knife blade and its a great upgrade for cheap.
The price difference in the US is about $30ish. Super Tinker runs about $28us. The Free is $69…but…it regularly goes on sale in our big box stores for around $50us. Occasionally on Amazon as well. I paid 55-59. My main difference was the aluminum scales (Victorinox Alox prices are more in line with the Free) and the clip. If you want a (decent) clip for an SAK it’s probably custom and can cost as much as the tool itself.
In the past I’ve used vicrorinox super tinker as my EDC, then switched to leatherman wave, but since it’s a bit too bulky for a pocket I switched to gerber dime (great design, poor build quality) and then to leatherman juice S2. It probably still is my favourite edc multiool. But I impulsively purchased green T4 and you know what… I miss having pliers, but I still reeeeealy like it just because all tools can be opened/closed with one hand and all of them lock. I even learned to use tweezers with one hand. That T4 is just somehow really comfortable to use. End up using it more often than I thought I would. P.S. nice to see another person being annoyed by their ear hairs 😂
For me the value proposition for Leatherman is not there anymore. I get the warranty alone but the consumer pays it upfront by the tools costing at least 1.75 times more than your comparable. Here it is: SAK super tinker $35, Leatherman T4 $75. When you do a by cost comparison the SAK outrider blows away Leatherman with a legendary large saw, best scissors in the game, large locking blade, locking pry flat driver, along with a 3d Phillips with reach. SAK outrider $75 and Leatherman T4 $75. BTW I front pocket the outrider daily with a hanging clip and it’s comfortable.
I have the P4 and really like it as my main multitool. I only got it over the P2 and T4 as I wanted pliers, and I hate combo edges. if there were a way I could have a plain edge on the P2 without having to buy it as well as a P4 to harvest the plain edge from, I'd probably go to that as I don't use my serrated blade and would appreciate the lesser weight. nevertheless I would recommend the p4 if you're a regular full-size multitool carry-er.
I have a soft spot for the Free K4. Has a good sized slicy hollow ground warncliffe blade, and all the basic essential implements if I want to do a light or compact edc. I like the idea of slim multitools in a sort of pocket folder platform. The gerber slim drive kind of fits the bill as well (it's much cheaper but lower quality). The only drawback to the K4 is the price. I wouldnt have minded the price if they offered at least s30v or s35vn steel. Why make a knife based pocket folding multitool and not go a little more all out on the knife steel?
Yeah i feel ya, that ear gristle hair is a show stopper and must be gone. Oh and good to see your sewer pipe doesn't have Huusk leaking out of it now... Phew, crisis averted big EPA fines for releasing Huusk in to the environment.
The T4 has been my EDC for about 2 years now and I was surprised on how much I've liked it. Zap Wizard Design's blade thumb stud really helped with ease of use.
My only issue with the T4 is that my Leatherman Rebar isn't that much bigger or heavier but has more tools including pliers. As I don't care about quick access to the blade, I tend to carry that one more day to day. I was hoping that the T2 would be a bit slimmer but it's as large and thick as the T4. Just less tools. But outside that, it IS a fantastic tool and whenever I use it, I do enjoy it a lot.
I ordered a t4 this weekend...frankly cause I'm tired of losing victorinox knives out my pockets. I'm hoping the pocket clip will be that thing I'm looking for in something I can carry in my pants pocket...unlike my leatherman wave. My only knock against it is that there is no can opener. I use the can opener on my Wave allot. I don't usually on my victorinox knives cause their can opener sucks in comparison. I might mod the t4 if a leartherman can opener will fit in the tool.
Hmmm, I often go with what's familiar, which means Victorinox for me. My Swiss Army Knife has the corkscrew (lol) and pliers as well as a really sharp saw blade and a decent file. I just noticed the tip of the can opener is a bit twisted. I could say I also have a smaller Wenger Swiss Army, if I could remember where I put the bloody thing!
When I was in Leatherman ecosystem I was blind what Swiss were doing as knife laws are getting harder I switched to cyber tool ohh Man..its a different ball game...Swiss really make metal beautiful...and functional already relieved my gum and ear hair such a relief I can shove it every where lol..even dont pluck hair on chest nor cold to touch when hanging...and I can go on and on !!!
G'day Pete, I reckon you'd like the Victorinox Trailmaster (called the trekker in the US I think). It has a good sized locking blade, good ergonomic handle and a decent sized saw - I live on a property similar to yours, and that saw comes in handy so often for small pruning jobs as I'm walking around the property. I think the big blade is a big advantage too. I bought one about 5 years ago, and it's a true EDC - in my pocket every day regardless of what else I carry. It's definitely the best victorinox I've owned (personally, I reckon it's the best multitool - although I have bought into the knipex cult, and often have a tiny set of those with me that are awesome for any jobs where pliers are needed).
I’m the same way with the ear hair and feel an irrational sense of impending doom that the world will end if I don’t get them out. The rest of the family looks at their feet in disappointment as I quietly celebrate after a successful tweeze
Always look forward to a C&A video, and I agree with Pete on all points except the Victorinox/Free Scissor comparison. The overall cutting performance and fine detail work are far superior on a Victorinox, so much so that I replace the Serrated Blade on every Wave/Charge with modded 91mm Victorinox Scissors and drop in a Rebar Awl where the crappy Wave Scissors sit. The Free Scissors are only a marginal upgrade over the Wave’s.

On a personal note I cannot own any tool that doesn't lock. Had so many close and pinch me and a couple where the knife closed on fingers. I'm surprised about the scissors going leathermans way, that's like victorinox's thing!
Cracking review bud,, I love the look of the T series, just too expensive, too thick. I carry an alox farmer every day, the perfect tool set for me
Free K2 is worth a look too. Better knife than the T4 and has just the 3 best tools from it.
How about letting uncle Randy give it a try. Would love to here his thoughts.
