    It was in my last 2 Bibles that I began creating a "system" for my colors. That began when I did an in-depth study of the verses that parallel the OT and the NT. (My gosh, that was so much fun!) I used a rusty orange for all of those. Then I did a study on the Sovereignty of God and used blue for all of that. That was the beginning of Theming the Word for me. It's addicting! Now I have a whole handful of colors with their own themes. I am still fine tuning those, and I think I'm about there now. We'll see. So here is where I am.... after a lifetime of using various markers, fancy highlighters, pencils, and pens.... I have found that my absolute favorite are ... (drumroll) ... Micron 005 for underlining. And cheap colored pencils for all the colorwork. They are not only CHEAP, but they are Bright and have ZERO bleed through. Absolute perfection. Jason, you GOTTA try colored pencils! Just the cheap Crayola ones at the dollar store. Or generic no-name ones. Or the LiquiMark ones. Oh, and the Crayola "Extreme Colors" are deliciously neon. I use all of those.
    So here are my themes: God the Father (Purple, as in King). Jesus Christ (Blue, as in Royal). Holy Spirit (Neon Orange). Wisdom (Golden Yellow). Salvation, Faith, and misc special verses (Bright Yellow). Christian Living (Green, as in grass-home). Protection, Courage, Strength (Aqua, sorta like armor). Love, Grace, Mercy, Peace (Pink). Sin (Brown, as in dirty). Warnings & Judgment (Red, as in blood).

      heleninspace Hi! Can you explain what you mean by “theming the word”?

    • @birdinmypalm
      @birdinmypalm 6 лет назад +9

      Sure, I'd be happy to. The colors having thematic meanings. For myself, I use:
      *Yellow = Special Things (favorite verses that make me go WOW).
      *Blue = God the Father, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit
      *Red = Warnings, and Judgment
      *Purple = Grace, Mercy, Peace, etc
      *Pink = Love
      *Green = Christian Living (reminds me of grass and the home)
      *Brown = Sin, Rebellion
      *Black and Grey = Historical Data and Info. Often used at the start of a book.
      *Orange = is sort of a generic color I use when nothing else fits. I also like it for Original Language Word Studies.
      That's pretty much it. Because I am me, I cannot be happy with only one of each color, so I have a handful in each color family. This is especially helpful in the Blues for God. I have favorites for each member of the Trinity.
      It takes time to get your colors just the way you want them. Some of these (like green for Christian Living, Yellow for Special Verses, or Pink for Love) goes back through decades of my own Bible marking.

    I'm using a fairly simple system:
    Jesus' Commandments highlighted in blue (blue means do!)
    God's promises highlighted in pink (pink for promises!)
    Scripture associated with healing highlighted in orange (orange you feeling better?)
    Words or text that pops out to me highlighted in yellow (hello, yellow!)
    For applications, I'll write up a prayer in a journal related to what I've been reading.

    I have used just three colours and a yellow highlighter, like forever, being colour blind, all my notes are in Blue as that really stands out, green for any Greek/Hebrew notes, and red for really important stuff I've looked up. And my 'where at' is Manchester, England.

    Hello Grace for Life, I use the same color coding system in both my Journaling Bible (NKJV) which I do my personal Bible study. I also use the NASB as my chronological reading plan Bible which I use the same color coding system. All my Bible use the same color coding system, my KJV Study Bible and my Amplified Bible. I use only U Brands Gel Pens for underlining in my NASB along with some hearts or small icon stickers for things that speak to me. As for my Journaling Bible I study the same as you do with all the colors (Crayola Twistable Colored Pencils), arrows from the scriptures and boxes in the 2 inch margins.
    I love of my Bibles (especially my Journaling Bible & my NASB) and my color coding system, which took me a couple of times to find what works for me. Oh side note: You are the reason I purchased the NASB, I watched your video about which one was better, the ESV or the NASB? I went the same day I watch because I wanted a Bible just read and once I read from them both, the NASB just spoke to me. I love the way it flows. Thanks for your videos, very informative and enjoyable! God's continued blessings!

    Thanks for making me feel more structured in my note making. I think context is critical in understanding the bible. I live a long way from the 1st century and even further from Abram's culture. I actually make notes to help me with that. I want to meet the people of the bible so I can better understand their interaction with God . I can then apply it better to my life. So my categories are culture/customs
    Geography
    Covenants
    Cross reference
    Faith/Action
    And my favorite. I am weaving a scarlet thread thru the old testament by noting those individuals in the lineage of Christ.
    General note

  • @Robin-px9rc
    @Robin-px9rc 6 лет назад +2

    Forget who the author was, but she said she highlighted what she learned about God in yellow (resembling a ‘golden nugget ‘), and anything she learned about being a godly woman (wife/mother) in pink. Don’t know if that part was random or just feminine. I like that. But I don’t mark in my bibles anymore because I always end up not knowing why something was marked, then it’s just a distraction. However, when I see others’ marked up bibles, I just admire them (the person and their bible) so much. I find myself switching bibles a lot. I have a storage bin full.

    I started with a pen &/or pencil & regular highlighters 21 years ago. Now, it's all about the Microns ;) My favorite highlights for the Bible are these skinny, black, Stabilos, but I can't always find them easily, so I bounce around now. I tired the gel, not in love. I just bought a pack of Zebra mildliners, but am nervous to try them in my current premium Bibles. When I finally get the Cambridge wide-margin, I'll probably use them, even if I still haven't used them in the others.

  • @jazziplanslife3949
    @jazziplanslife3949 5 лет назад +4

    UPDATE: I use a cheap set ($9 U Brands) of gel pens from Big Lot and a generic ball-point black or blue pen (depends on how I am feeling that day). I underline with the gel pens and rarely use highlighters in my main Bible which is a burgundy NASB by the Lockman Foundation. (I just love my Bible) SN: I use to use either the KJV or the NKJV but now my favorite is the NASB. My color code system is BLUE = blessings/promises from God/Jesus, GREEN = instruction.commands for righteous living, RED = warning/punishment/anything against God, RED ? = any questions i may have, ORANGE = God speaking/referring to the Law, PINK = God's people/the Elect/Children of God, YELLOW = interesting facts/things that stick out to me, LIGHT GOLD = God's character/qualities, DARK GOLD = Jesus, COPPER = Holy Spirit, SILVER= when "Do Not Be Afraid" is mentioned, PURPLE = my favorite text/if something resonates with me, BLACK CIRCLES/SQUARES = peoples' name/place, PURPLE CIRCLE OR ORANGE CIRCLES = words I am studying. I have had this system since I got my NASB last year and it has been working so well for me.

I have never ever had bleeding with them, and... they are erasable (but when you write with them, not forever!). They also make erasable highlighters in several colors. Not a fan of ink joys as I have had skipping and blobbing (it must be a word because it popped up on my “smart” phone 😁!!! Thank you for your message and tips.

    I still don't get it though, for example, once you've added meaning to each color then what? Just start highlighting? Or do you also take notes elsewhere? And if so, how do you take notes? Do you ask yourself questions of what you've read? What questions do you ask?

    Great and informative video. I myself like to study themes in the Bible rather than take a verse by verse approach. Your color coding would work great with that system, and actually when I was studying this morning I was thinking, since I am studying prophecy, I should highlight all the scripture I was reading in purple so I could easily reference it later. Thanks for giving me the down low on an even better way to color code. Thanks bunches!

      This approach to creating a system has been super helpful for me. I hope it helps you too! :-)

    So is it fair to say this is a completely different ‘note taking system’ compared with your other video where you read the scripture, underline or square off text highlighting it, draw arrow to margin in the same color, and put your notes there? Have you thought about merging these two systems of sort? So, you simply use the color in your chart I guess. Only thing is, if your in Galatians , let’s say, and it’s all law and you’re using red for law, then it’ll be difficult for all your boxes of red with red arrows to your margin of notes wrapped in red 😳😂 Any of this making sense?
    Now that I’ve got my hardback Cambridge wide margin, I’m gonna test a bunch of ideas. One of them using underlining in one color with a different boxed in color. I don’t know...we’ll see...I’m feeling a bit 🤯🤪 Thanks again for another great video 👍

      Adam Vine oh, no this is the same thing. This is just more of the “key” to all those markings.
      You’re right tho... when it comes to a page with a lot of the same theme, the one color can run together... so I try different things under the color, maybe using straight/dashed/dotted black lines under the color. BUT ALSO, as a rule, I don’t color code everything, only my notes. So yeah... Galatians 3 would be all red, but I’m only marking the specific text that’s standing out for the note.... so that cuts down A LOT of the markings.
      I want to see some pics of how you do it when you get started!!

      The new ink joys have yellow and brown. They bleed through a bit.

      Rebecca Juntunen yeah, after this I got some of the gel pens that have the yellow... but the bleed was pretty rough.
      I think I’ve figured out my go to system, but I’m going to post a video about that sometime soon.

    I've been looking into marking up my Bible but never knew..... what to mark up. Seeing this.... I'm left wondering.... why? If this is what people are highlighting and marking in their Bible..... they make topical guides/ references or "Bible guides" that.... pretty much do all this for you. No?
    I think I might just leave my Bible graffiti free and just stick with my notebook..... where if something catches my eye or I want to dig deeper I just write down verse(s) and literally spell out what I want to look into regarding that verse(s).
    I mean.... even a Google search for.... say "Bible verses regarding God's grace" will spit out a ton of verses for you.

    I already have a system; Why did I watch this? 😂
    I keep my colours simple. No darks and lights. Just blue, green, pink etc. That way if something happens to my blue, I can grab any other blue pen and continue on. Blue = promises and blessings, whatever shade of blue it is. Of course, that narrows down the number of categories you can have, but that isn't a bad thing.
    I bought myself some bible highlighters and they were awful. I replaced them with Crayola Twistable pencils ( the pencils, not the crayons) and they work much better.

    Brown is disciple or follow or follower because dirt roads are brown and John the baptist wore camel hair, there, that was my logic, ha
