Most of the 5200's games were direct ports from the 8-bit computer versions. This one looks to me like they started with the code of the computer version (which was absolutely awful, one of the most disappointing releases for that platform) and added a bunch of improvements. In that one, the aliens are coming off the left side of the screen because they're emerging from a big, dorky rocket that just hangs there on the left side. And there are no shields at all.
@nonothinghaveitall : glad to see you weren't turned off. It is my favorite classic system post 8-bit era. I'm going to start with my own video reviews now that I got a good camera and the first thing I'm going to do is review a bunch of my 5200 games. So watch out for that, probably in the next week I'll have some videos up.
@@Lightblue2222 It’s a frustrating programming bug. A fairly low scoring game, so those 60 point bonuses would really help you out-except they don’t tally in your score ☹️
There was a version for the Atari 2600, but it wasn't finished before Tramiel stopped all console releases. You can get the prototype ROM over at AtariAge.
I prefer this to the 2600 version by far. I still don't understand why so many people have a problem with the controller. I never had a issue with the 5200 controller, always worked well for me.
When all the kids on the block had the 2600, I had an apple 2, it actually caused fights. My mom wanted to get rid of it because I spent too much time playing and trading pirated games on the source.
Space Invaders would have worked beautifully with a Paddle controller, had they made a 5200 paddle controller for games like this and Super Breakout, we'd might end up having a different opinion on the system
Man if I had a 5200 and a lot of games, I might be up later playing them than I am on Xbox 360. I still can't figure out what it is about the simplistic classic games that are so good and fun.
@209938488 The point of the 7800 is it's 2 systems in 1. It plays 2600 games and 7800 games. NOT 5200 games. 5200 games are way bigger and has no place to go into a 7800.
i wasnt bashing any system i just felt like this guy is bias when it comes to the 2600 lol i would liek to have any atari system to have in my collection
Exactly I have both myself never liked the 5200 version the graphics either on it It took away from the original version and yes invisible invaders The colors are nice but the feel you get from the arcade isn't there either.
The game's come out on pretty much every console ever made. Everyone who's ever played a game has had plenty of chances to play it, but most wouldn't give this a passing glance if something else is on the shelf. It's kind of sad, really.
The crap graphics are almost cool. When Xbox updated Bionic Commando and all the other classic games . . it was OK, but there was something just WRONG about it. I'd much rather play the original classic, than a revamped glossy version.
2600 is a lil too easy. "Not counting those crazy invisible squiggly bullet moving shield modes that I never want to pick." I've looped the 2600 counter. 5200 counts mucho higher!
Seeing as how he asked that question 2 years ago and the latest oh, 7 responses in a row have been telling him, I think we can stop answering 209938488's question guys lol.
Does anyone know the atari game , that if you shoot one certain alien your game is over? and the atari games plays music but if you shoot one certain alien the game is done
There were still Atari 2600 games coming out in '89 and they are still making them (even though not licensed by Atari). And yeah, many 2600 games are shit, but there are quite a few gems (but you can get most of them in collections on other game consoles)
Stop blaming Russia! They had it hard enough in Command and Conquer where people thought they were the badguys, what you didn't see was they didn't get Space Invaders and they were just coming over to get a few copies for their comrades.
I know some retro fanboys get soooooo butthurt over this oh so taboo opinion, but you couldn't pay me to play this. Give me DoDonPachi or Crimzon Clover anyday. Mark's reviews are just entertaining.
The games on the 2600 were crap that is why there were so many other system and the reason for the crash. If they would of controled the game quality like space invaters it would of had a better history. I was so over the 2600 after the 5200 was out. If they were still selling it until 91 it was that they had that many in iventory it took them that long to get rid of them. No one was making games for them in 91. 84 was probably the last year games were made for it.
yeah thats why there was one in every other house, just keep assuming you know everything because you read an article once on the internet about a 2600 game called ET
Love how the aliens look different and keep on changing as the levels go on.
Especially the mystical phycodelic rainbow ones towards the end.
I use a Wico stick to get there.

I love the alien animations in this game though. They're so freaky!
Nothing can top the original arcade of Space Invaders. Absolute Classic.
Sweet Nice review! I have it on the 2600 not this version! this one looks better
I have to say, the animations on the aliens, as specially the ghosts, is very nice.
How could anyone not love space invaders!
Classic game no matter what console you play it on. I have this game on the Taito legends compilation on the PS2.
it was an optional feature to crank up the difeculty level.
I wonder if it works with the 5200 trak-ball.
Yeah, Atari 2600 was GREAT at invisible graphics, lol!

The best part of the 2600 version was the loud crunchy, buzzing noise it made when you died.
I like the sounds of hitting the invaders in the 2600 version much more. The hit sound in the 5200 is blah
Again, another nice review!
interesting quirk: when you hit the mothership for 60 points, the "60" is displayed--however you actually receive zero points
Wow. Never noticed this. That sucks. I love hitting those things, they're especially easy to hit in the 5200 ver. But wow..
@@Lightblue2222 It’s a frustrating programming bug. A fairly low scoring game, so those 60 point bonuses would really help you out-except they don’t tally in your score ☹️
I love the box art. :D One of the best Atari box arts around.
im pretty sure you can select game variations using the number pad!
the 2600 version was based on the original arcade version.where as the 5200 was not.

i use to play this game all night when i was a kid
I prefer this to the 2600 version by far. I still don't understand why so many people have a problem with the controller. I never had a issue with the 5200 controller, always worked well for me.
I love that game I grow up with it
SPACE GHOST COAST TO COAST LOL
When all the kids on the block had the 2600, I had an apple 2, it actually caused fights. My mom wanted to get rid of it because I spent too much time playing and trading pirated games on the source.

Definitely check out Space Aliens if you ever hit Minnesota or North Dakota aka the Middle of Nowhere.
I LOVE CGR
Great vid :) i have jsut been getting into classic arcade games emualted on pc. and your reviews are realy helpfull :D
Hook the the atari to a VCR or dvd recorder and hit record when playing. Then transfer to computer for editing.
"They would be...Space Ghosts."
Now why hasn't there been a Space Ghost video game?
An Atari Space Ghost game would undeniably slap!
A must have.
This is the first arcade game I have played
Man if I had a 5200 and a lot of games, I might be up later playing them than I am on Xbox 360. I still can't figure out what it is about the simplistic classic games that are so good and fun.
The most interesting part is the controller works. SEriously neat video though.
lol I could just watch him play Space Invaders for ages lol!
Why? He's not very good.
I refuse to defend the Earth unless my seat is covered with Rich Corinthian Leather.

If bunkers in any Space Invaders are big enough to cover each of a whole city, I wonder how gigantic those every kinds of invaders are?
Elevator Action is awesome.... I need to break that one out.
the atari 2600 was the best arcade style console in it's era till the release of the genesis.
You should review Space Invaders on the Atari 7800.
i wasnt bashing any system i just felt like this guy is bias when it comes to the 2600 lol i would liek to have any atari system to have in my collection
I love Space Invaders for the Atari 2600, alot of fun! Are there any other games that are like this?
11 years later, and this comment still is beyond the galaxy of stupid
Exactly I have both myself never liked the 5200 version the graphics either on it It took away from the original version and yes invisible invaders The colors are nice but the feel you get from the arcade isn't there either.

1:36 xD they removed invisible aliens , NEVER remove invisible aliens, you immediately end up on my %$@# list"
No. You can only play 2600 games on the 7800.
at least u got the joystick to work! lol
He's got a brand new tank,
Looks like a laser tank.
It's got leather seats.
It's got a CD Player, player, player, player....
The crap graphics are almost cool. When Xbox updated Bionic Commando and all the other classic games . . it was OK, but there was something just WRONG about it. I'd much rather play the original classic, than a revamped glossy version.
Did they not test the controller before-hand?
or ds.. and on xbox live arcade it's awesome too.
I actually own it on DS and XBLA :D
alright thx for the info
I like the 2600 version of this game better than the 5200 version
David Baker nah
2600 is a lil too easy. "Not counting those crazy invisible squiggly bullet moving shield modes that I never want to pick."
I've looped the 2600 counter. 5200 counts mucho higher!
"they could be space ghosts."
I see what you did there
what capture software do u use?
looks easier than on the 2600. No way you get a second shot at the mother ship!
*West Invaders*
space invaders is great
how can you use capture software on an atari 5200 or even a tv screen???
Great game
On the 2600 box art, i mean. :3
Seeing as how he asked that question 2 years ago and the latest oh, 7 responses in a row have been telling him, I think we can stop answering 209938488's question guys lol.
maybe with a tv-card for pc.. i think
Space Invaders was really the only arcade port that was actually better on the 2600 than the arcade.
some would add asteroids to that list
Does anyone know the atari game , that if you shoot one certain alien your game is over? and the atari games plays music but if you shoot one certain alien the game is done
dose any know if and where i can get this on my NOKIA N-GAGE?

You can play all 2600 games on the 7800 but not 5200.
Incorrect. You could play 2600 games with an adapter on the later updated version of the 5200 which had only 2 controller ports.
Dude, as was mine. :U
cool
That's sad, I'd know an Atari 2600 if I saw one.
Can you play ATARI 2600 and 5200 games on ATARI 7800
Only Atari 2600 games on Atari 7800.
Stop blaming Russia! They had it hard enough in Command and Conquer where people thought they were the badguys, what you didn't see was they didn't get Space Invaders and they were just coming over to get a few copies for their comrades.
space invaders the is the best
What kind of fool would even consider removing invisible aliens.
There's an NES version.
I had the 2600 version of space invaders, and just in terms of graphics the 5200 version is better.
I work in the united states Earth protection society,
and yes, we have leather seats when we are simulating :)
-jokes
maybe not first but best
...
They had Tetris.
I know some retro fanboys get soooooo butthurt over this oh so taboo opinion, but you couldn't pay me to play this. Give me DoDonPachi or Crimzon Clover anyday. Mark's reviews are just entertaining.
'They came from west' xD
So they have to be capitalistic dogs and the player is a soviet soldier :D ;)
second or mabey not
Stop shooting your bunkers!
some one want to explain why i got a thunbs down for that? wtf
a 5200 that atcually works!?!
run for your life! its the apocalypse!
just the atari 2600 version.
I say they are coming from the EAST!
Ah yes.. they only pretend they are from the west so nobody checks the east.
no
Only Atari 2600 games.
lol
What if you weren't born when this came out?
@TheDutchGame
Ewwwww.....:P
more like fail!

2600 just sucked so bad Atari didn't even like it
yeah thats why there was one in every other house, just keep assuming you know everything because you read an article once on the internet about a 2600 game called ET
