Literally kicking a sleeping giant. reminds me of the attack on pearl harbor, for the most part of two centuries, the US had refused to fight wars beyond its own immediate boarders, with the exception of Cuba, WW1 and the Philippines, with a brief mention of China. But suddenly the nation that had poised itself as the worlds mot righteous state had been attacked by an imperialist power. However the Japanese weren't so arrogant as to think that the Americans were weak, but rather that they were reasonable and not inclined to conduct a long term war that had already proven extraordinarily costly by the standards of interstate wars conducted by the US. Of course that was one of the greatest military miscalculations yet made in the long history of warfare on earth.
