Couple of thoughts I had after watching it: when the barrier blocks Lihanna’s attack she says the barrier was casted by the evil mages, so if this was just a random evil grand duke they encountered in the dungeon they probably would have been able to kill it without will’ new ability. Second thought: If I’m remembering correctly in one of the first episodes we were told that will’s sword has some kind of special ability; maybe in a ad break with a card about the sword? I’m not sure.
I have a feeling it has to do with that crystal that Rosty threw down to Will. Could it be working like a capacitor to store magic and then Will could use it as his own?
Iirc in those mid episode lore transition pages it said that profesor Edward and Workner reached dungeon floors 33 and 31, so they shouldn't have trouble defeating this floor 25 monster. The monster they originally wanted to beat was 110 credits btw.
Now that bluest saw this episode... It's okay to say now... Will has one and only magic. And it's Wis. The concept behind it is that will can prime most of the magic as long as he knew the structure of the magic. He never was a magicless human... But the queen the one who carried him when he's a baby. Was the one who sealed his powers and try to let him forget his one and only magic which is an absolute off balance to the magic world... Because unlike other mages he's the first mage blade or we called a magic swordsman. Both physical strength and magical strength. To summarize the ending of this episode is that... When sion cast it spell when it coated on will sword he learned the structure that's why when he saw an enemy attack he can evade any of it in the second time... Once he learned sion's "ignis rock" he primed it using his wis and formed a sword coated with ignis or fire spell... That's also the part when he said "ignis wis" ignis from ignis rocks or sion's magic and his wis...
Unfortunately it will take another season (which I have faith we will get) but I can't wait for the 2nd time Will uses WIS and what it leads to (not the battle results itself but something else and if you've read the manga like me which I believe you have then you know what I'm talking about).
Also, am I crazy but the character we saw in the flashback this episode with the Mage Queen whom we'll see up close next episode, Finn when he spoke to the Mage Queen is that not the same JP voice actor who voiced the Finn in Danmachi? They sound an awful lot alike and with the writer of Danmachi and Wistoria being same one it wouldn't surprise me.
It really is interesting, I do believe that we just saw Will use a spell. Note that his eyes turned red there. Perhaps Will cannot use magic because his magic relies on devouring other people’s spells- which makes him the perfect anti-mage. Also yes the Rosty = Elfaria theory stocks rose once again lol Great fight, the Grand Duke lived up to its threat level, it really took everyone going beyond their limits to take it down.
I think its the sword itself that absorbs magic. In the second episode, edward the professor asked to himself "is that a moira blade" or something to that effect. Seems to be some sort of legendary weapon, probably in ancient times, that will's family passed to him would be my guess.

Yes and no to your last sentence. WIS is Will and only Will's ability but there is more to it than absorbing spells. I won't say anymore as it would be a future reaching spoiler for a season 2 reveal. As you can tell though by the other characters reactions (especially to the teachers Workner and Edward who know what it is) this ability of Will's is a world altering (in a sense and somewhat literally too) ability. I'll say this if you want to know more about WIS read the manga if you're inclined. You will learn just how awesome of an ability it is. So much so that powerful ppl fear it.

His sword was made with a special material that allows it to cut magic, but that has nothing to do with his new ability

I will say this and this only: WIS is something only Will can do and he is the key (not the weapon or the spell).
