R.i.p Scott and brad. They need more credit than they get. There wouldn't be a manson today, i dont think without them.

I think MM would still be big, he had the determination and vision, which is really the main thing you need to become successful. But I agree that these two played a huge part in the early look and sound. And that they don't get enough credit. There was some talk of bringing them both back at different points, internally, and I wish that had happened just to see the outcome...

@@thegodbombs I do think that it was a bad move on Manson’s part leaving Brad in the dump which he even mentioned in pretty much every interview. I personally LOVED Brad’s style and bass playing, probably more than Twiggy, but think about how awkward it would have been to bring back Brad because even as a guitar player there would be no place for him. Twiggy started out as a short-term replacement while Brad was in rehab and had no say or knowledge of anything when he first joined and I personally think it would have just been a bad idea for either of them to come back. You do have to move on as painful as it is. Also check out my comment I just posted!

I remember Manson use to scare the sh*t out of me as a kid. My neighbor listened to him and I was a quiet and easily scared of everything kid. And I always saw pictures of him and it creeped me out. but when I turned 13 I listened to this album and I fell in love with this band and Manson. I became a huge fan of horror movies and weird and obscure things and this was right up my alley. What scared me the most as a kid was the first Manson song I ever heard. which was on Halloween. my brother set up a haunted house in our a living room, dining room and hallway. And he played Revelations 9 on repeat over and over. Literally we had a kid in the back behind a decoration next to the boom box playing it. and he had the kid hit replay over and over again. It creeped me TF out but many years later I got to hear the full portrait album and get your Gunn single and became a massive fan.

First time I had even heard of them and the stadium was 1/3 of the way full until Nails was about to come on but I was fucking blown away. Manson's banter with the crowd and his larger than life stage presence made me an instant fan. The next day bought the cd and tried to push it on as many friends as I could, like I discovered something special and felt the need to share it. Great times. Awesome review. The first album that I heard of Marilyn Manson was Portrait, so if holds a special place in my heart. 1994 was an incredible year for music. In fact 94 through 96 had some of the most intriguing album releases on the 90’s as a whole.
I was 13 years old when Portrait came out and I wouldn’t trade their influence on me for the world. They were my introduction to a word outside of the one that I thought I knew.
It came out prior to the Magazine covers and internet etc. So you had to really dig for info and album credits. It felt like trying to find a long lost treasure. And the closer you got, the further it went.
I think another great ingredient of Portrait was that Manson drew all of the artwork. That fact helped to tie it all together.
Without POAAF there would be no Antichrist, Mechanical or Holywood etc. It set the course for their future creative endeavors and undertakings.
Great review!!! I’m excited to see your review for each of their albums.

    • @thegodbombs

Thank you! Yes Portrait is the beginning. "STOP THE BOAT". A classic, rough around the edges. Created a whole aesthetic and set the stage for the schism between "band" & "solo artist" direction that would emerge later. What is your favorite song on Portrait?

  • @deadlycoversparkermurray5187

I got mad at first when he said Cyclops was a weak song because I personally feel that even if it isn’t a “strong point” in the album, I feel as though it fits perfectly with this album. Plus, it is one of the only songs with a real Daisy style guitar solo, kinda like lunchbox and wrapped in plastic. Also, Sweet tooth is actually one of my favorite songs and maybe the problem is that it doesn’t suck, but it is in fact overrated. I mean let’s be honest, everything Brad touched or did turned to gold, except drugs. R.I.P. Gidget Gein 😤🙏

Yep this was the beginning of MM firing ppl afrer they'd recorded an album but before the public got the album. So Gein gets replaced by Twiggy in booklet even though Gein did the bass. This happened again with Zim Zum being listed as "live guitarist of Antichrist Superstar" in the booklet because Daisy was fired after recording that album. Then again with Mechanical Animals, John 5 was listed as "live guitarist of Mechanical Animals" because Zim Zum was fired after recording guitar on that album. I was mad at the world as a teenager and I had never heard anything like it before so it sucked me in, giving me an outlet for my anger and frustrations I felt at the time. Going back to it now though I realize what really made me love it back then was the musicianship of it all. Holy hell the guitars and the groovy hooks it was like crack on a shiny disc. The only thing I could do without is the bizarre sampling and weird childhood pop-horror themes. Guess it was all a huge part of the Spooky Kids rep, but does not hold up to time and was ignored in future albums entirely. Have to love Lunchbox and Get Your Gunn, while Cake and Sodomy fits perfectly as the opener. But for me it's Dogma, Wrapped in Plastic, and I happen to really dig Cyclops. I have to say in all honesty though that the versions of the songs on this album just sound lifeless to me, the material is good but I've just never liked Trent's sterile production on this album every track on this album sounds much better live imo Trent just couldn't capture that energy in the studio. This album was recorded in the Tate house on Cielo dr in Los Angeles at the same time Trent was recording The Downward Spiral that must've been one intense atmosphere. Sharon Tate's sister actually paid them a visit and asked Trent if he was exploiting her sister's murder, that must've been a sobering conversation. You gave this album a 7 but I'd probably go with a 6 just because of the stiff production, still you gotta start somewhere and Antichrist Superstar was definitely a step forward.

This album is my favorite record get your gun was the first song I heard way back 1994... so sara Lee Lucas didn't play drums on the album???

“The album was initially produced by Roli Mosimann at Criteria Studios in Miami under the title The Manson Family Album. However, the band was unhappy with his production, and this material was then re-produced and remixed in various Los Angeles recording studios by Manson and Reznor, along with assistant producers Sean Beavan and Alan Moulder. Parts of the album were re-recorded at Reznor's home studio at 10050 Cielo Drive, where members of the Manson Family infamously committed the Tate murders in 1969. The majority of Sara Lee Lucas' live drumming was replaced with electronic drum programming from Nine Inch Nails keyboardist Charlie Clouser.”

the fact that he said this album has weak songs, means he came to Marilyn Manson at a much later age. Also this was not the original line up the band. The original Marilyn Manon aka the REAL one was with Gidget Gein the orginal who gordy white aka Twiggy stole his look and style from.
though the fact he worked with Scott and mentioned Brad means he truly knows the REAL Marilyn Manson.

This album is good because it was before manson killed Brian Warner. It's super interesting to compare this to any other album because of that reason.

That's a good point. He was still kind of commenting on society rather than existing fully as the Marilyn Manson character. There is something more compelling about him becoming the character though and stepping into that larger than life rock star role. The band just couldn't have gone beyond underground otherwise, I feel.

Portrait of an American Family is a great album From start to end🤘my personal favourite is Mechanical Animals but i love all his albums except Eat Me Drink Me cause it was EMO and definitely not a Manson album,i am a fan from 1999 till today and i think Eat Me Drink Me is the worst don't get me wrong i like some songs but that's the problem i like some not all of them but ok all artists have the up and down even David Bowie himself with his album Let's Dance.Sooo my rate of this album Portrait of an American Family is 8,5/10🤘🤘🤘🤘
