Joo is no doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest, choppers of all time. And to anyone not familiar with this playstyle, one quality that defines a great chopper is the timing of counterattacks (and initiating attacks). Joo is definitely top-notch in this regard, in addition to his incredible defense. The nostalgia hits really hard with this game. Two of the most shining stars of that time. Both are great players, and this match is super entertaining to go over again.
to me is the greatest by a long shot. He played in a time where choppers were clearly in dissandvantage because of the rules. It is trully amazing to see him returning those high spin top spins from Boll and the counter attacking at the first change. What a joy to watch this match is!
this is one of the most exhilarating table tennis match I have ever watched. Joo Se Hyuk is a table tennis legend. He played defensive table tennis like he invented it. Love from Nigeria.
Joo Se Hyuk is my favorite player...it's simply enjoyable to watch him play, with his beautiful style, technique and moves, rallies that last long, not just 2-3 hits and that's it: there is a game to watch here! Also, he shows that through consistency, resilience, patience and strategy you can defeat any opponent, even the strongest and fiercest...speed and power aren't everything. Finally, he performs at the highest level and has remained there for almost two decades, despite his illness he has to come to terms with. Hope you continue delighting us a few more years, Champion!
I am also defender player with Stiga chop&drive / abs 3 antispin setup. Hopefully I can learn something from JSH. Due to my illness I cannot too aggresive while playing. Just trying to play twiddle .Thanks JSH
When I was a teenager, I watched this video countless times and spent all my time practicing the cutman. I watched this video today for the first time in a while and it reminded me of a lot of things. This video is my youth.
One thing that I appreciate about this match is that it shows not all matches are won through raw power and strength. But rather, Joo did an excellent job displaying how defense and patience can win games. And of course, Timo Boll put up a great fight as well. One of the best matches had me on the edge of my seat!
Timo was playing so incredibly well, I think he had a very good chance of winning but he made the same mistake of trying the drop shot which Joo can attack without mercy, the second to last point was Timos for the taking but he let up when he had Joo stuck in a bad defensive position, and tried a drop shot when he should have kept up pressure. After that the final point was guaranteed for Joo since Timo basically gave up at that point, he played way safer and less aggressive, easy defense for Joo and gave him the win with the final drop shot.
Those chops are nothing but pure athleticism. The speed and control needed to keep the ball on the board is really mind boggling and admirable. It definitely deserves praise
To everyone call Joo cheap try chopping yourself! Its amazing that, even considering how the game is clearly tuned toward getting max topspin and power, he can still offset that with tactics. This guy is a genius.
Yeah, i wad a backhand chopper for a while ( Chen from Austria). Its really based on stamina and movement but i was good at it but im a pretty big guy (fat). But i was still good if you practise a lot
As a fellow chopper, hats of to Joo. He is the poster child for us choppers. That said i'm gearing up my game as a mix between chopping and topspin, dependent on game play.
Haha yeah. I feel the same. It's like the others are struggling and constantly attacking ferociously, while Joo just keeps on easily returning them with very little force. XD
That's not where his game is about. He surprises his opponent by occasionally switching to the attack , mixing it up. His attacking skills are quite good
It's nice to see the skills of the both players, because they have different styles. But i mostly like Joo Se Hyuk because he chopped until Timo lost :)
Always told myself if I ever get to a professional level I'd use that style even against the most consistent and offensive of players. One thing that constant ability to return powerful attacks does it wear down / frustrate the opponent, makes them miss more clear shots, and if they just make it back, quickly switch to an offensive shot in the corner to stun them. It's a slower style but I love it
Wow every point in the entire match where Joo attacked he won the point. Timo's going to kick himself after seeing how he lost the last 2 crucial by pushing high, giving Joo the chance to attack. Great match and well played by both players.
Table tennis is a sport of quantity of points. Timo is a very good player, but here he got worn down. Joo is a good player, smart and he wears you down. At the end you are tired and confused.
Defense vs offense is one of the most entertaining concepts to watch in table tennis- this video has over 2 mil views. It’s a classic match up that’s fun to watch for those who know the game intimately and the spectators seeing it for the first time .
this is peak table tennis sport! Probably Joo will go down in TT history as the best defender of all times. so strong but also so stylistically beautiful!
One thing I like about joo se hyuk...is his unpredictability...in the middle of chopping he comes out with a smash which actually surprises the opponent
He only lost like 4 points where he just slow-looped the ball, and Timo being a great counter looper hit them back with ease. Definitely a great offense and a consist two-winged chopper is one that is world class, which is why Joo was the best chopper of the 21st century.
Watching this, I felt to witness quite a new style of defending...nowadays it's called "modern defensive"... Joo Se Hyuk, one of the pioneers to perform like this ❤
Year 2024. i read somewhere that timo vs joo 8-4 in all matches and trying to find those 8 wins of timo, since timo lost in all matches i watched. While this match's final set 9-9 and timo lost the point, i hit the table because of my anger. 😀
Maybe the best attack vs defence battle I've ever seen. And Joo sneaks it because his forehand drive is the best shot on display. Sums up how the ITTF has treated choppers for decades.
Ive been an intermediate level chess player for more than 10 years and Im a fan of ping pong too. Ive seen many chess man at their own playing style, some are aggressive, very tactical and tricky in nature and some are very solid and positional that will test your patience and will wait for you to break. Now ive seen players of this kind too in table tennis. What a great player so solid and patient!
Whether you like chopper or not, that is the power of under spin, once you are worn out and made a small mistake on your return it will be a net ball and easy point for the chopper
many people say joo is too dirty. but i think they look like idiot. joo is one of the best defensive player in the world. he didnt any cheating. there is tecnique called cutting, and joo just using it. would you guys say that puyol’s sliding tackle is dirty? sorry for my poor english. but i think my opinion would have passed to everyone.

Very well said. Joo is certainly one of the greatest choppers of all times!

I rate him as the greatest chopper in the history.
this is one of the most exhilarating table tennis match I have ever watched. Joo Se Hyuk is a table tennis legend. He played defensive table tennis like he invented it. Love from Nigeria.
The last 2 points deciding the match are crazy. Fantastic. Joo Is a true magician ❤

Agree
He has reached more than any other chopper in table tennis, that's something
I am also defender player with Stiga chop&drive / abs 3 antispin setup. Hopefully I can learn something from JSH. Due to my illness I cannot too aggresive while playing. Just trying to play twiddle .Thanks JSH

Sympathize with Timo Boll's elbow
Timo was playing so incredibly well, I think he had a very good chance of winning but he made the same mistake of trying the drop shot which Joo can attack without mercy, the second to last point was Timos for the taking but he let up when he had Joo stuck in a bad defensive position, and tried a drop shot when he should have kept up pressure. I can't imagine how both players was tired after this match! It's truly amazing
One of the best matches I've ever seen.
Joo is the best chopper no doubt in that but what i loved in this match is his counter attacks
yes, thing is i wuld like to see him attack more, probably can attack better than boll, who knows.
Joo Se Hyuk is a classic. Best chopper of all times, I guess.
It is honestly remarkable to see how Joo can slow down the ball. Boll sends it screaming at him and he just floats it back.
But i was still good if you practise a lot
who calls him cheap?
As a fellow chopper, hats of to Joo. He is the poster child for us choppers. That said i'm gearing up my game as a mix between chopping and topspin, dependent on game play.
Nathanael Solomon timo do topspin becose he wants to return very strong backspin (its more harder to do very good backspin than very good topspin)XD
+Nutelko8 you? Chen Wei-xing?
He protecc
He attacc
but most importantly
he always gets the ball back
My two favorites head to head! Wow! This what I imagined this match would be like. Amazing!
The rally for the second last point is absolutely insane. What a game really. Cheers to the two legends.
Joo se hyuk is my inspiration ❤🏓
His chopping is Brilliant
its so fun to watch joo's matches XD
Himu Yashiro he's funny to watch playing
+Himu Yashiro boring but he was good
i guess its just fun to see the others keep attacking after he keeps sending it back, usually softly. long rallies are fun to watch i think :p
Haha yeah. I feel the same. It's like the others are struggling and constantly attacking ferociously, while Joo just keeps on easily returning them with very little force. XD
Cual es el nombre de ese golpe ???
one of my fav matches of all time
I watched hundreds of these tennis videos I’ve enjoyed this one the most so far
what a great chopper
it's beautiful
He's definitely the best chopper on the world
Ke
Tony Tony Chopper
13:15 From this part. THIS IS INSANE
Amazing chopper, this guy is a wall.
Can u tell me what is Chopper ? What it means ? Im colombian and defender too but idk what that means
JPe' literally what he is doing. Chopping is what makes the ball spin. Hope that helps
@@denzelurieta9206 got u, thanks
Chopper means defender. He plays by chopping with a lot of underspin
U guys should watch Ping Pong The Animation. The protagonist there is a chopper like Joo.
That's so f-in' sick. This guy refuses to attack. Amazing defence skills.
schymi841 well his forehand attack is awesome
I wouldn't say refuse to attack but attacks when the opportunity presents itself..
That's not where his game is about. He surprises his opponent by occasionally switching to the attack , mixing it up. His attacking skills are quite good
It's nice to see the skills of the both players, because they have different styles. But i mostly like Joo Se Hyuk because he chopped until Timo lost :)
One of the best matches I have seen

One of the best match I have ever seen

Those choppings are too enjoyable and beautiful. JSH surely is a respectful player.
It s beautiful. 1st time I see JS won TB... Love it. Thank U for uploading this beautiful video for the best defender
Table tennis is a sport of quantity of points. Timo is a very good player, but here he got worn down. Joo is a good player, smart and he wears you down. At the end you are tired and confused.
This game is amazing!
Joo is legendary player!
Joo is a one reason to love table tennis
Defense vs offense is one of the most entertaining concepts to watch in table tennis- this video has over 2 mil views. It’s a classic match up that’s fun to watch for those who know the game intimately and the spectators seeing it for the first time .
Very impressed match. All was excited in that arena in video. Joo deserved honor. Our korean hero. He defeated boll. !!!!

Two legends... best match ever!!!
this is peak table tennis sport! Probably Joo will go down in TT history as the best defender of all times. so strong but also so stylistically beautiful!
What an amazing battle of wits!! Can definitely see this over and over again
One thing I like about joo se hyuk...is his unpredictability...in the middle of chopping he comes out with a smash which actually surprises the opponent
Wowowowowowowowow
Legend play
Joo se hyuk is the best chopper in the world .
Amazing defence work! Crazy, but Joo can play offensive very good, in the right moment.
He only lost like 4 points where he just slow-looped the ball, and Timo being a great counter looper hit them back with ease. Definitely a great offense and a consist two-winged chopper is one that is world class, which is why Joo was the best chopper of the 21st century.
Joo make Timo change T-shirt . Timo is very tried.
Left arm's Timo need to tell "Let me go Timo" 555+
Watching this, I felt to witness quite a new style of defending...nowadays it's called "modern defensive"...
Joo Se Hyuk, one of the pioneers to perform like this ❤
A ticket to watch this match was a very well spent money.
What a nice rally. rarely to see this, Joo did so good when blocking timo's aggresive ball
12/24/2020. Still watching. Merry Christmas.
Year 2024. i read somewhere that timo vs joo 8-4 in all matches and trying to find those 8 wins of timo, since timo lost in all matches i watched.

No doubt this was one of the most entertaining professional match in TT history
Great job Joo representing Asia. Love from Iran
Wow what a match👏👏👏
Maybe the best attack vs defence battle I've ever seen. And Joo sneaks it because his forehand drive is the best shot on display. Sums up how the ITTF has treated choppers for decades.
this Joo guy is incredible... all about who remains mentally tough and holds on to his will... amazing match...
Amazing chopper
Congratulation to Joo , even though I like timo ball ! Saw the full match without any skipping
One of most beautiful matches
Great cliffhanger! At least with a defender you get to see some real rallies instead of serve-and-wham-I-win-the-point.
*top class nuclear reactor powered forehand top-spin smash*
Joo Se Hyuk: CHOP
Ive been an intermediate level chess player for more than 10 years and Im a fan of ping pong too.
My role model is Joo. Best defender of all time.
Mine too, but I am struggling with plastic ball!
Every time I watch a Timo video is a video when he loses
Great Match!! Incredible technique, this game was simple awesome!
Whether you like chopper or not, that is the power of under spin, once you are worn out and made a small mistake on your return it will be a net ball and easy point for the chopper
Sets 4 and 5 are such a hard demolition work...
I want to defend like joo so nice to watch greetings from germany:)
one of my favourite matches
Very Good Defensiv work
Great to see Joo's play against Boll
Amazing !!! Joo Se Hyuk !!!!
Joo Se Hyuk- was in his peak.
One of the best attacker vs modern defender match.

He is a cheater chopper
Joo is great! He adds variety to the game.
never heard of that before. The defensive chopping play style is an appreciated addition to the variety of playing styles in tt.
Ur english look like very poor,,,but I can get it....Plz. don t use the word of idiot for Joo.
