Basically, it's wardlaws directionals. When the ball crosses your body, send it back to where it came from back cross court. When the ball doesn't cross your body, hit it down the line or change direction.

I like going down the line on offense when you're inside the baseline, inside the singles side line, and your opponent is out of position
