That was spot on the money review. I have the 25.21 (no i) and listen to alot of electronic music and that speed really counts.
Dunno about speed-haven’t done any since the late 60s-but it’s really hard to beat transmission lines on electronica. I’m a big Eno + TL fan :-)
I got the twenty5.23 the smallest floorstander. I listen mostly electronica. I’ve had the speakers for about three years and I’m still super stoked about them. Something is just right. Could be the speed.

I have the floorstanding version of this standmount, albeit in the non 'i' Twenty5/23. I really rate PMC speakers, they are not inexpensive and some would say not great perceived value, but the sound, the workmanship, the 20 year warranty and high resale value make them worth the money imo. I cannot let them go, they are outstanding in their clarity, the floorstanders reach even lower in the bass to under 40hz and it's a clean bass to boot. I would choose a suitable amp though, they are very revealing of what's feeding them. My amp is the Quad Artera Pre and Stereo, a match made in heaven to my ears, the Quad being very detailed but not too bright sounding. A great and honest review Steve, thank you.
well I received the Twenty5.22i speakers today, and yes they paired lovely with the Sugden IA-4 amp. Effortless to drive these speakers with a good Class A amp. The clarity and articulation and annunciation is so clean and fast. The bass is perfect, not boomy very nice. This was a great choice.

Out of a long list of 10, the Twenty5.21i became the successor to my EMIT10's yesterday. I cannot vouch for the comparisons Steve did to the other brands, but boy is that speed addictive! Steve's review is correct on all counts. I'm hearing instruments in songs I had never noticed before. To my eyes it even looks pretty. .
I my pre-divorce and pre-alimony days I ran a pair of PMC OB1i's on the end of a full Naim system CDS/XPS/NAC52/Supercap/2 x NAP135. I still never heard anything better.
I mixed on a set of LB1's for years. I could find nothing like it at the time. Not only was it an asounding tool, I loved the character... especially the lack thereof! It was a perfectly clear and accurate window into exactly what was there... all the way down to around 60htz. I could never go back to a colored speaker now - no matter how good. To each his own ( with his own ears!) Pmc for me is the most listenable and enjoyable experience for precicely what it does not do.
I heard the Fact 8 and came away with the same impression... Super transparent with absolutely everything revealed. It's a fun enthusiast's speaker since any and everything you swap into the system will make an audible difference.
Still have a pair of TDL RT2 transmission line speakers they sound awesome and they are 30 years old, very good technology
So many speakers, so little money .... 😉
Would really like if you could get an ATC speaker into this comparison too. Another great Pro/consumer style product from the UK. Guess it should be something like the SCM20 from their Classic line to fit the bill?

Coming from the pro side (live/studio), I found it so interesting attending HiFi shows whereby ATC would be exhibiting demo'ing their 3 ways ... to rave reviews ... oftentimes most if not all had never experienced them.

Actually, ATCs appealing in the short term show demo style, may even be more impressive ... as my experience with ATC is simply a long term reference that continues to impress with it's capabilities that often aren't apparent during a 3 minute show demo.
ATCs really shine in a situation where one can switch between multiple other monitors, while working.
The ATCs subtle worthwhile characteristics really shine in that environment and flow.
BTW; yes, they're over-priced (or as I say "they're proud of them") I don't see myself buying them.
A few months back, I took a punt on some (used) Twenty5 26, much of the review applies to the larger/older sibling too. I feel this review describes the speakers very well and is very helpful in selecting / ruling them out. Best speaker I heard, so far.

as an amateur double bass player I can vouch for the accurate bass in pmc 25- stand mount speakers. very nice definition throughout the spectrum. great for listening to jazz.

Thank you so much Steve, I have been doing research on the PCM’s and before I even started watching the video I was wondering what the comparisons would be with the BRX because those are the two speakers that I’ve been contemplating for my next second room upgrade! I appreciate how detailed that you are in your exclamations. It still gives me a lot to think about, but with the size of my room and the price difference leaning a little towards the BRX right now.
Hi from Wales. I have an all British system. Pmc 20.21 speakers, Sugden a21 se signature amp, Rega Saturn CD player. Rega planer 3 turntable and rel sub. Can’t beat it.

It's interesting that PMC and ATC , two of the respected names in studio monitors, both manufactured in the UK, have ventured into the audiophile market with some differences between their pro and consumer lines but their signature neutral (that word again) sound and unforgiving high end are consistent in both lines because they use the same tweeters. All the while Harbeth markets their BBC legacy , clarity and resolution when in fact you won't fine them in use in a BBC or other commercial studio as a sole playback monitor.

Problem with harbeths is they don't have a center/dialogue speaker, would love that. Anyway, I will be able to hear the PMC (if all goes well with corona virus) in October in a show here... A question about these PMC... Was thinking to make a 5.1.2 (.2 is maybe) with the 25i 21, their center and a rel sub s/510... How you would see a pair with a ROTEL RAP-1580... Will sound weird to some, but I like this rotel couse is pure sound, no radio, no streaming. How would it pair with a ROTEL in general? What do you think?

I like my snell j7 bookshelf speakers and they have great music technicality with a little touch of speed. 🙏
I'm having a difficult time getting my head around the price, especially since I really like the sound coming out of my low-budget Elac Debut B6.2's that are driven by a Peachtree Nova 500. Are the Twenty 5 21i's $3k better than my Elac's? For me, personally, I can't justify spending that much for a speaker when there are other options available for less coin. But I will admit that the technology is pretty cool and for those that have the budget and a good room these would probably make for a great sound.

$3450 for the pair?? Subtract Donnie's 25% tariffs (price becomes $2587) and the 50% zero aptitude distributor/middleman markup (price becomes 1293). It is still way overpriced because Brits think they are so special and entitled in spite of not having the aptitude or capability to manufacture anything by themselves (whole thing sourced from China). So you, need to subtract another 75%, which makes it $323/pair. Be intelligent and don't pay a penny more than $323 for the pair, Bob. If Brit won't sell it for $323, he can keep it and set his tea cups on it while you happily enjoy your Elac Debuts. God bless.

What's difficult about understanding the price, there are always cheaper speakers, much cheaper than the Elacs, there are bookshelves much more expensive than these PMCs, you get what you paid for.

Interesting once again. Until half way i thought this would be the one. Good base and not to far from the wall are important for me. But then you mentioned the effect of compression. I must confess, I use Spotify quite a lot. So i go on with my quest. 😉
@@FJBx100 Fully agree. Tested these recently along with 25.22i. Never in a million years would I fork out the cash for these monstrosities. No mid range, screechy lifeless highs and overblown massive bass. So terrible it was unlistenable on several amps. PMC is a massive JOKE!
PRESENT NAIM IN 3 WORDS OR LESS: Low build quality. Must be left on constantly drawing massive electric current. Expensive recapping REQUIRED every 10 years. Use of overpriced DIN cables. Always an option to buy a new PSU for "better sound". Proprietary star-grounding mess equals incompatibility with other equipment without hum. Loudly humming toroid transformers. Famous Naim speaker hiss can be heard from 3 meters away with 87db speakers. Zero soundstage, only pounding exaggerated mid-bass. Naim "PRaT" is a marketing gimmick. Cold, steely, metallic and abrasive sound equals immediate listening fatigue. Naim repair service requires several months of unit immobilization. Naim has lost 3 CEOs, 2 Marketing Directors and countless technical engineers in the last 2 years. Naim INSISTS on using ALPS blue velvet potentiometers for balance and volume control which are ALWAYS imbalanced and SKEWED either left or right. It impossible to have a centered musical image for stereo listening with Naim equipment. Naim STILL will not update the omerta on using non-Naim speaker cables as they threaten this will "blow up" your amplifier because of inductance, resistance and capacitance values. Naim is now obligated to demo with Focal speakers, and vice-versa, due to the unnatural and illogical marriage of two brands managed by Vervent Audio Group. This entity is managed by Cedric Boutonnet from Saint Etienne, France and who doesn't give a SHIT about Customers in general and the Naim brand in particular. It is a well-known and well-documented fact that Naim and Focal do not work together and should never be in the same system. Imagine associating Naim with beryllium tweeters = instant ear bleed. Shall I continue? There's lots more to be said.

Great review!! I'm toying with getting the floorstander 25 24i's... Have trialed Spendor D7.2s and A7s. Prefer the latter as the D7.2s a little dry sounding. Pmc is richer for sure with layers of bass.... Amp is the very analog Rega Aethos 😊

Hey Steve two questions for you. First what speaker cable are those and second I also see you still have the Cornwall IV what's your favorite overall current speaker? Great review BTW. One last thing, can a very revealing speaker tend to be fatiguing?

I had the PMC DB1+ for years and I had a lot of fun. Small dynamic and musical speakers.
At some point after moving to another house, the bass was lacking.
It could go down to 50Hz, but I heard with a sweep 60Hz.
Even I know they could sound like if there was a subwoofer if it was done right.
I have now the little ProAcs and there is more body and more depth.
So what happened with the Twenty 5.21i. This is the second review about this speaker and body and bass depth is what lacking. Steve didn't even mentioned the bass depth.
Do they need a big powerful amplifier to have better bass?

The pmc speakers are great but massively overpriced here in the US market. I did have a chance to listen to the 25.24 when I was looking to upgrade my B&w cdm 7nt speakers and compared them with the B&w 804d3s. The B&w won hands down especially with my naim amplifiers. horses for courses.
Steve, question! I would love to get your take on the presonus sceptre 8 studio monitors with hifi equipment, if you can get your hands on some, I have a pair in my studio but don't have the hifi equipment with xlr inputs

Yes, Transmission Line woofer loading is altogether brilliant! But the other woofer-loading techniques have also developed! T-line, bass reflex, acoustic suspension, "infinite baffle", open baffle, daline, they are now so good, as to be a matter of personal preference. Which is lucky for dreaming-up one's choice!
Back in the 1970s I built several speakers and ended up loving TLs above and beyond the others. As you say, personal preference. But folded TLs are difficult to fabricate and add considerable expense. The alternative is to unfold the TL and DIY. For recordings that can’t stand being exposed an inexpensive pair of infinite baffle boxes is the solution. As you also point out acoustic suspension and bass reflex speakers have come a long way over the decades also. We never got anywhere near the bangs for the buck forty years ago!
I’m still hopeful of having a pair of Voigt pipes (hybrid TL & horn) built before I pop my clogs. I’m literally dying to hear what they sound like!

As I recall, in my early days of exploring high fidelity audio equipment, I believe that Irving Fried was working with transmission line speakers but I'm not sure if he was the first designer who took advantage of this configuration.
@Gordon Welford There was a guy called Paul Voigt in the 1930's who developed the Voigt pipe/tube, which is a transmission line within a ported enclosure, with a dash of horn thrown in for good measure. @Gordon Welford The Bailey design was the first TL I ever heard. It and the Radford used the KEF B139 driver. Listening to the Bailey’s alongside the KEF Concerto (bass reflex) taught me a great deal about the influence of cabinets.
The waveguide reminds me a lot of Bose technology!

Can you do a video on all the recommended speakers that make recording sound “good?” I have a lot of music in different formats and can’t afford to have speakers that make more than half of my music sound terrible.
I bought a pair of JBL 530 bookshelf speakers and with their compression driver tweeter and other fetures I think they do just that. I'm selling mine - too much stuff, but they can be had at about half the original cost right now if you want "new" JBL leans more towards fun than accuracy whatever that means anyway.

Yes, this is one of the greatest and most successful rip-offs in modern audio. Listen for yourselves. You'll understand in less than 60 seconds.

@@FJBx100 I've never owned anything from naim. I was referencing pmc speakers.
These PMC’s absolutely intrigue me. Both the standmount and the floorstanders, the latter of which I’d be more inclined to consider (if I could get to where I could afford them). I wonder if combining with the right tube amp(s) might balance in some of that “magic” you’re speaking of in the comparisons.
How do they compare to the first generation PMC Twenty21? I had them for years and they were lacking in many, many areas.

I own a pair. more laid back then the 21's but the 23's use the same drivers just a larger Cabinet plus better bass.

The usual questions: How are these with a subwoofer? How do they compare to Klipsch RP600M at 1/6 the price?
Dunno about these TLs, but adding a sub to my floor-standing TLs did not improve matters, rather the reverse. This may not apply if you’re into surround sound/movie watching, but for serious music listening, save your money. Never heard Klipsch...

To The Max - I don’t remember Steve mentioning a “hole in the midrange” on the RP600M. Is that a recently added feature? Could a Schiit Loki take care of that issue?
@@AdrianIII A good party speaker as is. I once owned the Loki and is okay but worthwhile spending the extra on better speakers, if you find any used ProAc, PMC snap up.

But isn't a transmission line a way of cheating for more bass? A 5 inch woofer can only do so much.
Nope, not cheating. When you listen to the same driver in infinite baffle, bass reflex and TL you hear what the speaker can deliver in each circumstance. A 5 inch woofer can deliver a surprising amount of _clean_ lower bass than its competitors. Theoretically, a Voigt pipe can deliver an even cleaner sound...
How can speakers that small ever be the best option?
Exactly
Physics ... wins every time.
Granted, in a very modestly sized room, these small monitors would be best.
If your listening room possessed a longest dimension of about 12 feet (3.6m), the reciprocal gains inherent to such a small room would help bolster the range below the PMC's -3dB point.
Steve mentioned ~47hz, that aligns best with spaces with a longest dimension no more than 12', for bottom octave support.
IMO, these would only be suited for tops in a bass managed system with subwoofer support.
Or perhaps in timbre matched surround duty. That said my biases are toward large, high dB capable, full bandwidth mains, AND multiple subs.

Considering the recent hystory of PMC products, it would be nice to know if that "truth" is really that, or just another very poorly designed loudspeaker.
As per Stereophile recent review of the PMC fact.8 Signature loudspeakers, it seems to sound as bad as it measures, with an overall response that wouldn't dignify a $300/pair loudspeakers, let alone a $12.000 pair!!!
Measurements don't tell us the whole story (at all), but I became very suspicious of the brand after that very poor design (even more on that price range), and I would question this supposed "truth" as a bad design until proper measurements show that they didn't also screw up this design. 🙄

That's literally the worst website for audio. Using measurements to judge audio is like reviewing cars using dyno graphs. It's a horribly misguided approach.

Thanks for pointing this out. Although critical, it seems a well-founded and objective review. Always useful to have the speaker measurements so you know what you're buying, ahead of any listening test.
@@r423sdex Measurements are a great tool for designing a speaker, not so much for buying a speaker. There are too many variables from electronics to room acoustics to make any conclusions from measurements.
What amp is a good pairing for PMC Twenty5 2?

Because most people are listening not over great speakers or headphones, they’re listening over crap speakers or headphones in the car, train, plaine, and other noisy environments. Recordings are made to be listened to that way

For almost the same money I would rather get the Tekton Double Impact.
I was thrilled when I heard that a design philosophy I toyed with back in the 1970s had been implemented successfully. Unfortunately I live on the opposite side of the world to where they’re fabricated. I asked Tammy if they would consider sending me the drivers + cabinet design and I’d have the cabinets fabricated locally, but she refused. I still don’t know how much they’d cost me, or how long they’d take to get here, but a CD I ordered from the UK in May took almost three months to get to Tasmania!
