- The Northbound #14 Coast Starlight arrives in San Luis Obispo just ahead of the Southbound #11 Coast Starlight, with a rare BNSF engine, #4353, on point running on Union Pacific tracks and in UP territory.
Watch as the #14 swings past and up to the station platform on track #2, and seconds later, while the passengers load and unload, #11 arrives but holds on the main just north of the station, as the passengers of #14 block the track #1.
After #14 loads and track #1 is clear, the BNSF-led #11 slowly crawls into the station. Be on the lookout for a man running along the platform cutting across in front of the train, and the conductor's explosive response!
Northbound train #14 pulls out once #11 clears the main and has stopped in the station, and minutes later, #11 pulls out for Los Angeles.
(Note: this was the day that the RBBX Circus Train was heading up the coast from Ontario to San Jose. RBBX was originally scheduled for a Noon arrival in SLO with a 1-hour animal watering stop. Rather, delays abounded and RBBX spent most of the day in sidings, namely two hours at the Surf siding waiting for this Southbound Coast Starlight #11 to pass, before arriving in SLO at 7pm.)
I live in SLO, and I've taken this train to Seattle and back 5 times, and taken numerous other trips on Amtrak! The train is something special if you're not in a rush.
Still recall parking in the lot, using the station restroom, noticing the old pay telephone booth and mailbox in the station- from 1999. This train-station holds as much charm as Amtrak. Fine video.
Love how the southbound does his horn. It's almost musical with the bell. I miss seeing the trains in SLO. I no longer live there.
I miss living there to man
I love the conductor's response!
@John Haynes At 2:56 when the person crosses the track. Conductor throws his arm up and then scolds the guy after.
hmmm, BNSF leading a coast starlight is sort of odd. Thinking it was being delivered to LA BNSF tracks from Sacramento or Point Richmond? Routing on UP coastal was convenient to help out over the Cuesta grade, maybe borrowed power due to one of the SLO helpers being down? was there ever any reason given by anyone as to this foreign power situation?
Helps my situation, I have an N scale layout of the Cuesta grade in the works, also some UP and BNSF sections planned as I am doing SD to SLO then maybe on to SF in T Trak double and triple module scenes. I have UP and BNSF GE locos so yay now I can hook up my superliners to the BNSF and not feel embarrassed by it!
Great video. Thanks.
They need to put crossing signals in the middle platform.
AWESOME
when they still had cafe cars.
Vintage Railroad you mean the Pacific Parlour Cars. Those have been retired in 2018. The cafe cars are the lounge cars.
Scary. No but I do have a problem with kids who think they are a heck of a lot tougher and smarter just because they aren't face to face with the person.
I think the guy who crossed the tracks missed his train
things would be different if i was there
What did the Conductor Say? He looked Pissed Off.
Are you f&*$ing nuts!
make bnsf pulling metrolink ples
Probably came from a place of BNSF territory
Kalmith Falls most likely
Unitedforever Klamath Falls is still on UP territory. BNSF is between Portland and Seattle. There might be BNSF track near Klamath Falls though, so I don't know about that.
Nice video!
Sheesh @UnionPacific18 ,what is your freaking problem? Jerk...
Your one Lucky Foamer..
Mind your own business little kid.
