Shawn Fain - who was elected to lead UAW in March and has been a firebrand proponent of autoworkers - has at least two significant streams of revenue, the filings showed, earning $187,259 a year leading a UAW non-profit training program and another $160,130 per year in his previous role of administrative assistant at the union. Fain's UAW salary likely jumped well above $200,000 per year upon taking over as the union's president earlier this year. Compare that to a UAW auto plant worker. How much does he give up during the strike?
yeah, he is the president. everything, everyone is voted. he is out on the picket line. he works there too. he has to travel all over doing negotiations.

My brother said the same thing with his union. He said the union never did anything for the workers and when you brought issues up, they looked at you like you were bothering them. He was asked to go on strike and risk his job for workers who were so damn lazy, always on the phone and barely did any work. He stopped paying his dues and got himself out of the union and they called him a traitor. He still works there but just not in the union.

At least the striking UAW workers get $500 a week to support themselves. Most regular people are lucky to get $500 a week at their jobs. Just shows the difference in how much they are making and then asking for more compared to the normal person who can’t make enough to buy the vehicle that the UAW is making because the price will be adjusted for all of these added benefits the UAW is asking for.
The offers that companies have on the table are amazing. Most Americans would LOVE that kind of raise! Fain is simply trying to make a point now because he doesn’t like corporate America. Do I think CEOs need the bloated salaries? No, but the UAW has most of what they want. Don’t screw over thousands of workers because you want more. Shawn Fain knows a 32 hour work week isn’t viable, he knows pensions can’t be brought back. He seems like an intelligent person that now just has a vendetta against corporations that provide jobs for hundreds of thousands of people.
This. He doesn't care about the lowly members anyway. He's just trying to become richer himself. If he can get the members more, he can then tax them even more and his wealth will rise...
We all agree with u, the workers are greedy fat cats that just want more. The CEO's on the other hand worked hard for that 40 percent wage increase. The strike needs to stop
These poor auto workers already make as much as people with college degrees and real skills. Let them work at McDonalds and see how they like it, they would probably need some extra training to do the work properly.
The best thing Ford can do is shut all of the plants down and send the union workers home. Fain will then have to pay everyone $500 and those funds will dry up quick forcing him to negotiate. This creates an even playing field with both sides having a vested interest in coming to an equitable (for both sides) agreement.
also, as a benefit, dealers will have time to sell the overstock of trucks nobody wants or can afford. epa needs to be shut down and quit telling makers what kind of vehicles they have to buy.
They can’t if they are signatory to the union. At least not immediately. It would take some time. that’s why there are union contracts. So your employer just can’t throw you away because he thinks he’s overpaying you.
The only thing that the UAW and the strikers are accomplishing are there own lay offs. Once an agreement is reached Ford and the other legacy auto makers will just invest more into automation which will eliminate these workers jobs.

Not just in the auto world, but every sector. When america sold out, or was bought out by the walmarts, the home depots, the walgreens and cvs, the krogers and such 20+ years ago, i don't think anybody realized what they were setting this country up for. This is the worst possible time for the UAW to be doing this because there's already a vehicle shortage. Makers like Honda and Toyota don't have access to the chips and parts that they need and smaller makers like Mazda aren't going to be able to make up for the volume. That basically leaves the germans, who are struggling because of the war in Ukraine and then the koreans, who obviously can't Supply the entire world with vehicles. Add to that the fact that the public is already fed up with being unable to get parts and vehicles and this is just spelling a public relations disaster for the uaw. I don't think this is going to end well for them.
I just drove back from Florida and was very surprised on how many brand new Kia's where on the road. Some of the Kia's where as big as suburbans. Most of the Kia's where being driven by young people ! Brand loyalty last a very long time. I have to say the Kia's has the styling and look nailed. All the older men on my street own 4 door pickups and to a person they say most likely it's their last one. I think the big US truck makers of half ton trucks are in for a shock! It appears to me all the young people starting out and making some coin are buying small good looking economical cars. The company we got them from had the same markup. I doubt it has changed much judging from the infomercial auto repair insurance on the TV.
Once upon a time at a far off company a strike was formed. The math was done and it was discovered that no rank and file worker would ever re-coup the money lost while on strike. Well then, who does? All the higher echelon of the union from shop stewards up. Striking is the only power a union has over a company.
My wifes Ford Explorer has been in the shop mulitiple times. Still has an electrical issue where it randomly won't start which they can't figure out. American vehicles are not worth the prices their asking and yet the workers want more money to build substandard vehicles. You want more money, then do a better job.
I remember all the GOOD jobs at G.E. in upstate NY for over 40 years and the families that were supported by those jobs, the markets and ancillary services that thrived as a result of EVERYONE having a GOOD job and benefits. Then the Unions and their members decided it was time to flip it all on it's head. Now no one has jobs and the nearby communities are filled with welfare recipients and single parent houses (can't call them homes) and all the mom & pop shops lost the ability to remain open and serving their local families, so those building are abandoned. Gas stations, convenient stores, and local restaurants are closed/gone too. I know what brought this change to our region and it was not "corporate greed" - it was Unions. G.E. is just one example. Do you know why Ford never had to ask for a bail out? That's because the workers decided to take the hit for the company. And we still haven't received what was promised to us. When a worker can die on Ford property, and Ford lies and says that the person died on the way to the hospital to avoid a major lawsuit and media coverage, that says a he'll of a lot about a company. This was confirmed to me by a Morgan & Morgan lawyer a year ago. There's a lot of shit that goes on inside those Ford plants you all don't have a clue about. But you damn sure don't mind driving the vehicles that are made from literal blood, sweat, and tears! Bet you sit behind some nice cushy desk. The hardest work most people want is keeping from having a damn paper - cut at the end of the day! To each his own. But don't dare open your mouth against Ford employees! It's not intentional harm. Striking is about increasing the scarcity of labor in the immediate market. Labor IS the company. No labor, no company. It is a critical resource that a company cannot do without. If an oil company's wells dry up they have to spend more money to move, find and drill etc. What happens if the oil company cannot afford the higher price of doing business? Labor is just another resource, an input. It is the most important one. You think Ford didn't know this strike was coming a year ago? They have had plenty of time to solve this problem. Blaming labor for their concerns like they are, is like the oil company blaming oil because it dried up where they were located.

The government has made it so they can't keep the unions out. If they want to keep the unions out they are going to have to move production to another country. That is why Ford built their massive plant with supplier integration in Brazil and not the US. They wanted to build it in the US but the UAW said no to the supplier integration and several other things Ford wanted in the new plant. So they built it in Brazil. Was the largest Ford plant at the time, still may be.
I bought a 1999 F150 it was 9yr old; with a 8'ft bed with fiberglass Cap... Two wheel drive, 4.6 V8 with 73,000 miles on it when I bought it. I've had it for 15yrs it has 218,000 miles on it now. When I bought it, cost $5,900. There selling 10yr old trucks for $10,000 or more. New Trucks forget it! I'm convinced this is my last pick-up-truck. The BIG 3 are out of touch!
it's the epa outlawing small trucks. also, the gen z-x ??? can't have manual transmissions, manual windows, no ac, ps,cruise, cheap radio, alarms, buzzers, keyless,-all junk and $$$ and problems. Can't buy a new vehicle without that crap
It seems like the UAW is doing the auto manufacturers a favor by pulling their workers off when they're not needed anyway. I think they're working together
First off, a simple google search "why are car prices so high" will tell you that it's because of the global health crisis that has affected supply chains dramatically. I don't expect you to know this because you haven't worked ten years in an automotive assembly plant like I have. There has been MANY days called off because we simply did not have enough parts. For every delay, every part shortage, they try to compensate by raising prices. We have NOT striked them like this or asked for more for a DECADE. You are no different than the CEOs. We make up a small fraction of the total cost of manufacturing. We literally have to fight for more because there is ZERO incentive for the companies to pay their workers a fair wage. Their bottom line is profits, not people. That's why unions are fundamental in a capitalist society, because, at their best, the bottom line of unions are PEOPLE not profits. It's a simple balancing act. Furthermore, taylorsutherland6973, we are currently bargaining with the current prices on vehicles, so blame the company if they raise prices. I only ask that you go forward not commenting from emotion, but to seek the logic and knowledge behind everything and not to make second hand passing remarks on the lives of close to 500,000 tax paying, hard working, Americans. Whom I am proud to call brother and sister.
Labor to build a vehicle is 5% or less. Vehicle prices went up 30% over the last few years and pay has went up 6% over the last 13 years....are you serious? Vehicles are expensive because they want to maximize profits period.
How much will the price of a vehicle increase if you move to 32 hour weeks and get a 40% pay raise will have to figure that into the price I guess? Doesn't matter to me I'll never buy that overpriced junk again.
Cars and trucks are made with cheaper materials and foreign labor, they are more expensive than ever CEO'S make more money than ever these companies are bailed out with our tax dollars & people still don't get it ?
I can’t believe all the comments against American workers. The ceo of gm sat on tv & admitting making $29m last year. But the workers can’t get a better wage? Greed is ruining this country. Enough!
I have to agree. If you can RANDOMLY give yourself a 40% raise, you can give your employees a 40% raise as well. These ceos aren't struggling to keep food on the table or a roof over their heads, it's a shame how out of touch they are.
The reality is pensions are not going to come back pensions are too damn expensive. That’s why they have 401(k)s for a reason. People who’s been working not just at Ford but other places before they got rid of pension are the only people they’re only gonna have a pension
@@balor7 That depends how do you spend your money and how much you save your money how much do you invest your money and even if you do retire will see you retire with her for a 1K you’re good for I. don’t know some of years but you can work on the side. There’s nothing wrong with that to make a little extra cash here and there.
Every government employee has a pension. Pro-rated at 100% of their wages! That goes for elected officials, too. They only need around 12 years to be vested. When union workers need 30 years for a 65% return. Way better than a 401K, though!
The Big Three need to fire all of these people drop your Union contract and hire non-union workers not only will the price of production drop the price of vehicles will also drop.
Your an idiot. Unions are great for the working man. Prices wouldn’t go down because your employees aren’t union. The owners of ford don’t give a shit about me, you, or our neighbors. Prices will continue to rise on vehicles no matter what.
No one told Ford to get involved in a Chinese joint venture for the Battery supply plants...Nor did they twist Ford's arm into accepting large amounts of Tax Payer money for the Battery Plant investments... I mean, after much negotiation, GM has no such issue with UAW Representation for their present and future Battery Plants..
I believe the UAW needs to have a talk with the dealerships. Seeing how they've marked up vehicle's so high and no one can afford them. I guess they'll all be out of jobs soon.
I think its kind of funny that everyone is talking about how expensive everything is. The reason everything keeps going up is that the companies employees hold the companies hostage for higher wages then the companies jack the prices up. Its a vicious cycle and will have to stop somewhere. Probably like the 80's when nobody could find a job because everything got shipped to Mexico and overseas. Luckily im out of the labor force now and i can just sit back and watch everybody grovel for their pennies. Which wont matter because whatever they want will just keep going up. Have fun with your $150,000 truck!
Ignorant. A simple google search would show you "The global health crisis and supply chain problems caused a shortage of new cars, which led to limited supply and record-breaking prices."
Funny how you bring up the Mexico built vehicles....have you ever checked the prices on those $100 per week employees? Did you save money from buying one of those vehicles??? Nope! They raised those prices up 30 percent too. Learn what you are talking about before you utter ignorant verbal diarrhea.
Several reasons for high vehicle cost: 1) Mandated gov't EPA regulations requiring expensive hardware to comply. 2) Overload of useless gadgetry on vehicles, i.e. cheap you don't need, by consumers gobble it up. 3) Inflation due to excessive govt spending For those who are complaining about how little they make, what holds you from leaving to a better job of its so bad? A: Its still the best game in town for an unskilled, uneducated person. While the pay increases have been marginal, UAW still pays no medical monthly insurance co-pay, and year over year that's a big increase.
Get your facts straight! These kids are working for $16 an hour. Union hater? Fine. Your business. But don't talk about what you don't know about. YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM IN THIS COUNTRY !
I hope the UAW does to the American auto industry what the unions did to Hostess. Then the world will see for themselves the fruits of opening yourself up to a union. Unions literally resent the company they force the company to use. It’s a sick and disgusting situation. Think about it for a minute. These guys literally believe that companies are taking advantage of them. Yet instead of just moving on to greener pastures and letting the free market decide, they force the companies to hire only them and the employees can therefore only keep working for the union. Unions literally remove competition and fight the free market
And the free market is nothing but a battle to the bottom. The lowest bid. Unions built this country, I find it odd you think that if someone is getting paid at union pay scale you think that’s the problem? The problem is corporate greed. The millions, and billions of dollars a handful of people make at the top. The problem is what they’re asking for in this particular strike is downright ridiculous. 40% pay increase? Complete nonsense. A four day work week on top of that pay, again, complete nonsense. Being in a union myself, it boggles my mind that the workers would actually agree, or even think they could pull something like this off. They’re already making what, $90,000 a year? Now they want a $40,000 a year raise and work 32 hours less a month. This will never happen. And people, thousands of people will lose their job, and be replaced by automation, whoever is running this union should be removed.
@@Maynardd unions did not build this country. The entrepreneurs whom the union members like to vilify, along with people who wanted the safety of working the someone else built this country. I hope they fire everyone that is on strike, they make so much money and benefits, that's why vehicles are priced so high. Just fire them all and go non union.
This strike is going to cost ALL US autoworkers their job. It's really a stupid move on their part, especially right now when the pricing of vehicles has made them unaffordable to the majority of potential customers. And the pay the autoworkers receive from the last contract still allows them to live in luxury compared to the average American. There's no reason to strike. Just because a certain percentage of Ford revenue comes from Louisville doesn't mean the products can't be built in another country. The union is being absolutely foolish. American auto companies must respond to market conditions, and they would be very correct to close all US plants down now, sell the land for cash, and build plants in other countries.
If that's what we have to do to take the message of end corporate greed then that's what needs to be done!! We don't find for just us...but for the middle class. Most of us are tired of letting the rich take advantage of us.

The UAW only had 12 weeks of strike fund money to cover everyone. Cant wait to see when its gone, and so will the jobs

All the older men on my street own 4 door pickups and to a person they say most likely it's their last one. I think the big US truck makers of half ton trucks are in for a shock! It appears to me all the young people starting out and making some coin are buying small good looking economical cars. The one's that are moving up fast and making big coin are buying Teslas and BMW's. The big three days are numbered. just my opinion.
@@Bigfoot2025 Most people can't spend $80 to $150 for a F350 or similar truck. And that is sold at the dealer prices not some made up suggested retail price that always gets pushed around.

I don't expect you to know this because you haven't worked ten years in an automotive assembly plant like I have. There has been MANY days called off because we simply did not have enough parts. Furthermore, taylorsutherland6973, we are currently bargaining with the current prices on vehicles, so blame the company if they raise prices.

@@Spazticspaz - What is moronic about that? I say, build plants in free states, hire non-union workers and F the mob mentality unions.

Fire them all! I’ll take that job at their current wage rate ALL DAY LONG!

Because you’re greedy you make too much money for it needs to shut the plant down
I think its kind of funny that everyone is talking about how expensive everything is.
Several reasons for high vehicle cost:
1) Mandated gov't EPA regulations requiring expensive hardware to comply.
2) Overload of useless gadgetry on vehicles, i.e. cheap you don't need, by consumers gobble it up.
3) Inflation due to excessive govt spending
For those who are complaining about how little they make, what holds you from leaving to a better job of its so bad? A: Its still the best game in town for an unskilled, uneducated person. While the pay increases have been marginal, UAW still pays no medical monthly insurance co-pay, and year over year that's a big increase.
Get your facts straight! These kids are working for $16 an hour. Union hater? Fine. Your business. But don't talk about what you don't know about. YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM IN THIS COUNTRY !
Only between 5 and 6% of the vehicle price is labor wages. The cost of the vehicle is not the fault of labor.
They think as high school educated line workers they are entitled to profit sharing. They dont deserve a dime more than McDonalds workers
@@Maynardd unions did not build this country. The entrepreneurs whom the union members like to vilify, along with people who wanted the safety of working the someone else built this country. Everyone helped build this country. The unions are like parasites who hate their hosts … without the people who actually put skin in the game (entrepreneurs) and risked everything, the unions would have no one to work for and therefore no one to vilify except their neighbors who hustled and made a like for themselves…
@@Maynardd the unions care nothing about the companies they work for and we can all see it in their workmanship. They have no pride in their work. They are too busy being victims to the corporations and envying them to actually have pride in the work they do. The mentality is “unless you pay me what I think I’m worth, then I’m not going to put 100% in”. You can see now where unions have gotten us. There are zero successful corporations which hire unions left.
@@JoeSchmoe-mp3pm that couldn’t be further from the truth. And you couldn’t be more wrong.
Ford needs to come to a right to work state and cut the pay to be inline with tesla and Toyota and just get it over with
Michigan used to be a right to work state.

Drop the union workers, then drop the prices on the cars.
unions are the reason we have 40 hour work weeks, health insurance and weekends. it will be a very quick backsliding if there isn't anyone looking after the rights of the workers.
@@bobloblaw9679 they’re also the reason for massive off shoring, automation accelerating, and slow wage growth. The benefits come out of something nothing is free.
Close it down for a year and reopen without the union.
When the kitchen is on fire and it is spreading fast, you don't go to the basement and start another fire.
They risk crashing the entire economy.
If that's what we have to do to take the message of end corporate greed then that's what needs to be done!!
