I bought the large tracker from Böker it snapped in the handle after smacking it twice... These skeletonised Böker handles have issues.. My mini tracker is still fine..
What about comparing with the Ontario ASEK Pilot knife with the small serrated sawback and leather handle. Boker has a much wider saw which may not be as effective in tearing the material. So which would be better in getting out of an aircraft or helicopter, then building a shelter in your opinion?
The real Wenger is $400.. so this Boker is a bit of a bargain, not crazy about the D2 tho.. For the scales.. find a few different sizes of ball bearings that fit into the flared tubes, center/reposition the scales, put a ball on each side and squeeze it in a vice, move up to the next size ball and repeat. They haven’t come loose yet, but both of my TRC’s have those tube things :/
It’s a shame the strongarm is around 90$ but unfortunately that’s the price we pay for inflation, and the fact that American steel is up some 200% in some cases, compared to a few years ago. Even the cheaper 420hc steel isn’t immune to the effects of a crappy economy.
I’ve seen a video from a fellow German RUclipsr where the scales got completely loose by chopping & batoning with the knife. And he didn’t even abuse it, it was use a survival knife has to withstand.
I’ve got one of Dave’s original Pilot knives. Obviously, there are no handle issues there. Mine performs exceptionally well. I’ve also got one of his Trackers which, to be honest, has seriously exceeded my expectations. I’ll be curious to see how Boker handles your issue. Other than that, it looks like they did a good job.
You can tighten the scales up by using a long tapered punch and tap it gently into barrel pins. That will expand the pins and tighten it up. I like the knife and it's an easy fix although it shouldn't have happened. I'll stick with my Gerber Strongarm and Schrade SCHF42, 42D and SCHF55. Great review as always. Don't know why it didn't show up in my feed until now.👍
You need to check out the Boker Bronco in CPM 3V. Pretty reasonable priced and a good 4" sized blade. Made in Germany, and I payed less than $150. Good quality leather sheath also. I think you will be pleasantly surprised, and I think you will like it. Amazing good grip.
@@gideonstactical I see that some of the US retailors have it listed at a pretty high price. But many European sites have it for around €120 (which I believe is the same as the Garberg with leather sheath cost). I bought mine at Lamnia in Finland, they have free shipping after $150 and usually delivers to the States within a week. Just in case US retailors don't drop their prices. But Boker US website should have similar prices to Boker DE I hope?
Very impressed w/my Bronco - the handle reminds me of a rubbery version of the Spyderco Bidirectiional FRN scales, except it appears to be a 1 piece handle made of a rubber or similar material. Blade was magnificient out of the box, very sharp 3V. Def would love to see a review Aaron.
Thanks Aaron for the review. Nice looking knife, but don't like the shift in the scales that you experienced. Think I would settle on the Gerber Strongarm.
The first sawback ever put on a blade, by Bo Randall, was to saw through the plexiglass of a lunar landing module that had splashed in the ocean. Not wood.
I think it’s an excellent budget airplane knife. I don’t fly planes so I wouldn’t need one but it’ll definitely get the job done to extricate from the fuselage and emergency fire etc. It certainly seems durable and it’s not $700-$1k for a vehement MACV SOG. It’s not for me but I think there’s a market for it in the Alaskan bush ✈️ industry.
I know you seemed to like Ka Bars Turok, and your review on it was the little nudge i needed to buy it for myself, so i wanted to thank you for that. I have also seen that the Camp Turok is also a thing, and it seemed very good. About an 8inch blade, a very high saber grind, and a nice thick spine so it doesn't chew up your baton. It seems too good for the price, of about half that of an Esse junglas, and it's Ka Bars 1095 Cro Van steel. So if you're ever out of ideas of what knives to review, give it a look, i think it could even be a better option than the BK9, as the sheeth is the same as the Turok one.
I was very hyped for this Model, but after seeing a austrian YTer pry off the Handle with his hands, ill have to pass. Glue&screws wpuld solve that problem, but i am not in the market for a DIY project
Great video. Tbe best knife from Boker Plus is the Ginger Fighter. Beautiful knife and considering it's a Plus knife, the quality is super high. No longer in production and a bit hard to find.
I dont own the pilots knife , but i did buy the boker plus komodor in sk5 from knife center. Kinda along the lines of a rat 7 or essee 6 with g10 scales. I realy like it and price was right 78.95 .
As soon as I saw this knife I thought SRK, my old 3V DLC is an incredible knife, sure it was more expensive but every red cent I spent turned out to be worth its weight in gold.
You should test the sharpness on telephone book paper or other thin paper. All printer paper tells you is that it is not completely dull. I also never saw the point of sawbacks on knives other than for the 'cool factor'. You waste far too much energy trying to use them and would be better off bringing a manual chainsaw, or a silky pocketboy. Plus they make them harder to use for detail work, batoning, or striking a ferro rod.
G'day Aaron, close but no cigar I reckon. Cant say I've ever had scale issues like that on any knife and yeah the clip is not exactly inspiring. Other than that, perhaps a little high but not way out of line price-wise IMO. It certainly would be interesting to see whether it is a one off failure. Cheers Duke.
I love the look/utility of flared tube rivets, but handle shift is a significant concern. As a novice knifemaker, I addressed this by using tight tolerances and epoxy to fill any gaps. Boker could just go straight to the epoxy route and probably fix the issue. I do have to wonder if perhaps the brass tube isn't deforming as well...maybe a thicker wall tube or a switch to stainless steel might be in order...
The sheath and clip are still better than what comes with the boker bark beetle. The bark beetle handle only fits 2mm into the sheath while blade tip is still 1½-2 inches from the bottom of the sheath just floating around. Then there's the belt loop that doesn't stay clipped for more than 5 steps because whoever made the sheaths clearly never actually saw the knife they're for 🤣 not to mention the ergos were horrendous even though it looks like it would be really good
Damn disappointing. I just found the Tracker locally last weekend, was going to go back this weekend to purchase. Thank you sir, you just saved me a c-note.
Not my style of blade. The scales ploblem throw off the window every good aspect given by the blade. If you have troubles when using , then is not a tool.
Yeah, the problem with the scales is a problem, given the intended purpose of the knife. Lots of times I consider batoning an unreasonable and unnecessary test of a knife, but in this instance, being able to withstand impact is literally a core design element for the tool's intended use. Big fail.
Do you not know what the saw is for?In a wet and damp forest, find wood hanging in trees, take the blade and cut off the bark, lay down a bandana ,cut notches catching the shavings, use that dry tender to make a fire 🔥.
I have purchased two Boker knives... returned them both. I now avoid anything made by this company. This video just further cements my feelings towards this company's products.
I made a review about the Boker-Wenger Mini Tracker and it worked just fine. Awesome little tracker design for much less than a TOPS. Only concern: skeletonized handle which may break if repeated abuse

The first sawback ever put on a blade, by Bo Randall, was to saw through the plexiglass of a lunar landing module that had splashed in the ocean. Not wood.
The teeth on a military issue pilot's knife are shaped differently, more triangular, and go through the aluminum a lot better.
