- Here's a great old tune that I know you'll love to pick as much as I do! Take your time, but you're going to discover that it has a lot of "licks" that repeat to build the song. You've got this!
I'm playing my Recording King M5.

Great song and best teacher
Thanks!
Jim Pankey, I’m in the UK and I bought a banjo about a month ago during lockdown as I was being furloughed from my fencing firm. I followed your 10 bluegrass lessons for three week and thought I would jump into this as it’s one of my favourites to listen to. I usually play drums and have dabbled with guitar but the banjo, for some reason sits very well with me and haven’t had to much trouble picking it up which I think has a lot to do with your fabulous teaching skills. Banjo isn’t overly popular in England, everyone just wants to learn the guitar 🐑.. the point I’m getting at is I’ve found a lot of happiness in playing this beautiful instrument and without you, I know for a fact I wouldn’t be enjoying it as much as I am. Much love from UK to Georgia!
I'm glad I can help you learn! Thanks for letting me be part of that. 😊
I'm in England and bought a banjo a couple of months back.
Bright spot in my day thank you.
So glad!
Love that song! I made it to lesson 4. My arthritis makes it tough, but hearing that makes me want to continue. Thanks!!
You can do it!
The m5 sounds amazing in this video. Always does but this one something really pops
it was having a good day. 😊
I also learnt how to play this as a teenager (on the guitar) in the late '60s. Now 50 years later I can play it on the banjo, many thanks, great lesson, love your warm and sincere sense of humour. Makes learning a real pleasure.
Thanks for letting me teach you ☺️
I just started learning the Banjo and I gotta say you're such a positive and helpful teacher! I never thought I'd be able to pick up on these things but with your help its really made learning fun and relaxing so thanks a lot!
So glad I can help you learn!
Konečne pridal Jim aj klasiku Jesse James jeho podanie banjo školy je zrozumineteĺné pre každého ďakujem!!!!!!
Som rád, že sa vám to páčilo! Dakujem za sledovanie.😊
The first song I learned from you Jim, it's really good. I think there's gonna be more. Thank you!
Thanks for watching 😊
The best banjo instruction videos on the net. Thanks Jim.
Thanks 😊
Nice Jim. Learnt this a while back but haven't played it lately so this is a great reminder. Really appreciate all you do.
Thanks!😊
I'm planning to buy a Deering White lotus banjo 5 string .....with that instrument I will follow your lessons (I'm a guitarpicker...so I think, I hope (I am 69) that I will be a fast learner....Your lessons are great......Greetings from Nico van Eenennaam in the Netherlands
Can't wait to hear you play. Keep me posted on your progress!
This song uses the same tune as an old favorite of mine! I'm gonna have fun with this!
Enjoy!
Thanks for another great tune. I enjoy watching and listening to your treatment of each song. Brings it to life.
Thanks for watching! 😊
I just love when you start out playing it full speed. It lets me hear it correctly before I start learning it.
Glad you enjoy it!
I honestly am learning so much from you. I started playing in January after I got my banjo for Christmas. I am getting better every single day trying to develop that muscle memory.
Some of those Left Hand stretches are tough and I can't help touching strings I'm not supposed to. Any advice on how not to mute adjoining strings while learning a new chord that your hand just isn't used to??
@@JimPankey Hey, I just read you are in Georgia. I'm basically in the Savannah area.
Glad I've got, the main man, Jim to teach me
Glad I can help!
Thanks Jim! Always liked that song!
Me too!
This is great Jim as usual many thanks Kilmersdon Ken
Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you for lessons Jim
You're welcome!
Just started on this - super excited! So glad you do this.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks Jim.Your efforts are much appreciated.
Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you for all your great videos, please do another livestream, they are so fun. Proud to be a patron
Live stream soon!
Hi Jim! This one's took me a bit of a while, but have the lick now and am just trying to get it tidied up. What a great old tune it is!
Would love to hear you play it 😊
Thanks, Jim, that lesson was a goodun, for sure. That D lick causes me to stretch a bit with the left hand, but with a little practice I'll get it right!
You’ll have it in a day or so, I bet.
I'm getting my first banjo on the 5th of May. I'm so excited. I've been wanting to get a banjo for years.
Woohoo! Cinco de Mayo Banjo!
Cool tune. I'm gonna learn this one when I get off of work so I can learn that ending! I'll let you know if I am successful!
You can do it!
Wow this song was actually easy! Thanks!!!
Yep! Glad you liked it!
I’m loving this one Jim, thank you and best wishes
Glad you enjoy it!
Found my next song. Looks like fun and a little more active on the left hand.
It’s a fun one!
Ok after many slow down sessions I got this note for note like you played it. I don't usually do note for note, but I liked your flow. Oh wait, I did find a few double stops by accident that I am going to incorporate when I get it down even better, but generally like you. I wish I could do the cripple creek lick with your pull off because I love how it sounds, but I can only seem to make it sound like its flowing with a push off at that juncture. Maybe I will try to learn the pull off. I think I learned it first way back from Murphy Henry with the Murphy Method with a push off instead. (dating myself I know). Old habits hard to break my friend! As always Mr Jimbo, thank you! By the way Jim when Im on .66 speed, you gotta put the down the bottle! But thats the way I learn the best when you are on the sauce, LOL
Oh man, yes, the slower speed and my voice is comedy gold. 🤣
I’m just getting ready to start my banjo journey, I’m waiting on my picks to come in. I’d give anything to be able to take one on one lessons with you. You are by far the best I’ve seen at breaking everything down in plain terms. And at the same time, making it FUN! Thank you for all that you’re doing to pass this knowledge on to folks like me.
You can do it! Keep me posted on your progress.
Enjoyable! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I don't have a banjo but I love your videos
Thanks for watching!
Hey Jim. I went to get my Recording King RKR20 today. I should have it by Friday the 5th. Can't wait. Hope I made a good choice. Thanks for the heads up on the lessons and banjo choices you give.
Great! I hope you’ll like it.
@@JimPankey Great. If you're ever in the state of North Carolina, stop by Drexel Barber shop. It's on U Tube. All if North Carolinas best have been there.

Thank you so much !
You're welcome!
Hey Jim! Hope you’re doing great 😁. Would you do a lesson on Take it Easy by the Eagles? You make learning so easy 😁
Not sure when I’ll be able to get to it, but that might be fun.
Thanks Jim!
Thanks for watching!
Looking forward to tackling this one! I’m still trying to master “Goodbye Liza Jane” though.
No hurry. It'll be here when you're ready.
Jim Pankey - Thanks, Jim! I started with the 10 part beginners series, of course. From there, I went to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” After that, I started “Liza Jane.”
Like it jim
Thanks!
Jim, can you recommend where to buy additional thumb / finger picks & brand? Thanks and Love your "Beginner Banjo Lesson" videos. I'm on Lesson 2.

Jim Pankey - orders submitted.
Can you teach me how to play " what a friend we have in Jesus"? Please
Maybe.... here are some lesson notes I did for a student - ruclips.net/video/E6OF2DXMIow/видео.html
8:07 kitty!
That’s Missy. 😺
Hi Jim and thanks for making Lockdown in New Zealand a lot more bearable. Definitely giving this one a go. Question for you though. Now I've been playing a while and have a small list of songs going, I find I get confused and can't remember what comes next and end up playing a medley.. kinda Foggy cripple breakdown. Do you use some kind of cheat sheet or tab to remind you?
I’ve never really used tab or anything to remember how stuff goes. What you’re experiencing is pretty normal though. It’ll get better.
Hey Jim! Can I make a request? Can you teach a beginners series on “hallelujah”? I want to play it for my parents by Christmas. I really enjoy your teaching methods and I’m strictly learning from you. :)
Probably not; I really don't know much beyond the bluegrass genre.
Pls do Caroline in the pines 🥰
Hi Jim, another great lesson. Is Alabama Jubilee a tune that can be transpired not too difficultyly or is it one for the more experienced. Its a tune that always brings a smile..
It's not for the timid, that's for sure.
Thanks Jim! Simple and effective. Sounds even better in A or Bb. Bb would be the ‘typical’ key, right?
Key would be wherever someone was gonna sing it. As an instrumental I'm not sure it even matters.
Awesome Jim. Having never heard it are there any lyrics?
Should be able to web search for the lyrics
@@JimPankey My favorite answer to people returned, ha, ha. Love your vids, stay healthy, keep picking.
Most bluegrass folks don’t sing it though. I’ve generally heard it as an instrumental.
Please I need tabulator jase james

Is the first set of hammer ons the same as what's in Grand Fathers Clock after the 2-1-2-1 and pull off ?
I think they may be very similar!
Nice! I’ve been playing a few months now and since I don’t have any local teachers you’ve became my master. Question, could you teach anything from a Tyler Childers song?
I don’t think I’ve heard any of his music.
Okay how about Angel band, or One drop of water! I know you know those 🙂
Hey Jimbo Ohio here
Welcome!
Could you do Angel Band or One drop of water? Well I know you can, but would you?
Probably not. By the time a new picker is ready for those they should be able to figure them out from the recordings.
Have 2 questions
How much pressure do you put on the strings when plucking?
Where can I get a thumb pick like yours? I like it.
Never thought about how much pressure. I pick pretty hard. Thumb pick is from www.bluechippick.net
James Wilkey pricy, but worth it
Jim, do you do any kind of stretches with your fingers to loosen up?
Try these: ruclips.net/video/h2no3aVkACE/видео.html
Jim, you've gone full blown RUclips, haven't you?
I have been since about 2016...
@@JimPankey Oh, okay. Just hope your doing this because you want to.
Oh gosh... it’s really hard to get me to do anything I don’t want to. 😆
Mr. Pankey is there different kinds of forward rolls?
not really... forward is just a sequence of TIMTIMTIM. can start it on any finger, but still - same pattern.
@@JimPankey just making sure I have a book that has different variations of forward rolls on different strings
Yeah, but I don’t think of it like that. It’s all still “forward” in my head.
Can you do fox on the run anytime?
I’ve considered it. Thing is, it’s pretty much just an intro. There’s no official break.
Hi Jim. Do you have tab to this anywhere? I find it speeds up the process of learning new tunes. Could you provide a link? You've mentioned tab before but I can't find it anywhere on this channel. Thanks.
Link to the tab is in the video description
@@JimPankey OK I found it. I also found your ebooks which has about 21 song tabs in it, including Jesse James. I think I'd get more out of buying that. Is it the same tab as the one you linked to?
Sorry, it has 31 songs.
@@andiivalo7938 I'm pretty sure it's different if you found it in one of my collections.
I just found your channel! I want to learn but I don’t have a banjo. What is a good one to get for a super super beginner?
Check out the Recording King Dirty 30s models.
Thanks! I’ll check them out. I love your channel btw. Great energy.
I absolutely love your videos. ❤
I’m so very glad you like them ☺️
Who's song is this
It's a 19th-century American folk song about the outlaw of the same name, first recorded by Bentley Ball in 1919.
Does sound awfully like lulu walls no?
Maybe?
