  • Laura, a Scottish-Syrian film-maker reconnects with her cousin Lujain after 10 years apart. Once so similar, their paths were separated by war. Subscribe to The Guardian on RUclips ► bit.ly/subscribegdn
With holiday footage taken many years ago before the war, Laura tells the story of her family’s regular trips to Syria to visit relatives in Damascus. Hoping to reconstruct a positive image of the past, she begins sharing her memories with Lujain. The problem is that Lujain, who fled to Canada, has no memories. Suffering from the trauma of war, she has forgotten many of their times together. As they reconnect, they begin to rebuild their friendship and reflect on how war continues to affect every relationship long after it ends.

Why is the audio in this video so quiet? Right click on the video and select “Stats for Nerds”. From there, you will see that RUclips measures the audio as 10.6 dB too quiet. Someone at the Guardian needs to learn how to properly export video for RUclips because you’re clearly not using the correct settings. I’m sure your audio is properly leveled, but that’s not worth much if the export settings are wrong. Ruined what I suspect could otherwise be a great video. I am about to unsubscribe because this problem appears in almost all of The Guardian’s videos.

Although this is, of course, a deeply personal story, the quality of film making/the video footage, the muffled speech (due to compressed online chat footage) and the lack of facts relating to the broader narrative of Syria's problems, left me confused. It lacked a story, or overall narrative to gel it together.
In the end, I became disinterested/bored and didn't watch the whole video, which is probably a disservice to the people involved in the video and the aim of it.
    Sorry.
