CROCODILE : Pottery Relief Carving

Borneo is home to the giant saltwater crocodile, which is the biggest reptile on earth at around six metres long, fully grown. As a ceramic artist born on Borneo Island, I chose the image of a crocodile to be my subject in pottery relief carving. I carve when the clay is leather hard-firm enough to handle but still scoring easily with a fingernail. If the clay is too soft, it’s challenging to maintain control of the carving tool; it may leave burrs; and it can be easy to carve through the pot by accident.
