  • 200 Cars even, by my count. Certainly the longest train I've ever seen in person ! Caught heading East at Spences Bridge, BC. in the Thompson Canyon. Amazing Length.
    Locomotives :

    I have a relative who worked for Rio Tinto Mines Railway in Western Australia. He was a locomotive driver and by himself had 3 GE AC45' s on the front, 3 more 85 cars back and another 3 pushing 240 loaded Iron Ore cars to a port city many miles away. He did this twice a week. Also BHP Billiton mines do the same with 9 SD 70 Ace's.

      Thank you. I'm not surprised, I'm sure in time they will keep growing what with trying to reduce costs etc... I prefer the days of 30 to 70 cars, just seemed more interesting, certainly easier to model ! At this rate it'll even be hard to capture modern trains in Z scale.

    Australia still holds the record for longest consist of 7.3 miles 682 loaded cars. UP holds the North American record at just over 7 miles, can't remenber how many cars. BC rail used to have a limit of 80 cars on its track, but when CN took it over, they had a weekly rash of accidents because of running more than 80 cars. The tighter the curves in a section of track, the shorter the train can be because the forces of drag cause the trains to be pulled off the rails,

      For those who aren't well versed in Canadian geography, "The Rocky Mountains" begin at Banff and carry on to the Pacific Coast. Of course they don't, but the rest of the world often thinks otherwise. Spence's Bridge is in the Fraser Valley and any train passing through en route to Vancouver will have come across some pretty rough terrain, whether the Rockies, the Coastal Mountains or any other range in between. Two hundred cars, empty or not, is a massive train. Be grateful you weren't stuck at a crossing and in desperate need of a gas station restroom.

    And then the railways wonder why people take chances racing trains to a crossing... No one wants to sit at a crossing for 5-20 minutes while a 200+ car train passes. This one - all empties btw - was moving at a reasonably good clip - perhaps 30-40 mph (50-65 km/h). Imagine if it was restricted to 20 or 15 mph (40-30 km/h)?
    All because CN & CP don't want to pay for crews to operate shorter, faster trains.

    Hardly the longest. Look at some of the iron ore trains in Western Australia.

    • @aprotosimaki
      @aprotosimaki 5 лет назад

      Are they longest? I think they might have more cars but may be not the longest. My understanding, which could be wrong, is that the CN/CP intermodals are the longest regularly running freight trains. I go north of Barrie, Ontario, and see them around Key River. The longer ones are about 4 kms in length, over 170 cars but the cars are carrying 53 foot shipping containers so each well car is longer than that (76 feet or so).
