  • He was born in the small town of Waterproof, LA, but from an early age Claire Chennault thought big. He launched the theory of "defensive pursuit," and practiced what he preached as a leader of the Flying Tigers in China. A chain-smoking, hard-living man, Chennault seemed to come from another generation, but was beloved by all-even the notorious Chinese leader Chaing-kai Shek.
Fifty-two men and women who made America's air power the most respected in the world are profiled in this award-winning series. The series, made in the year 2000, features exclusive interviews with Legends such as Chuck Yeager, Jim Lovell, Buzz Aldrin, and Paul Tibbetts. Spanning the first century of flight, Legends of Airpower effortlessly relates the life and times of these heroes.

I live in Palestine Texas in East Texas and I knew the grandson of this man. The gentleman died of cancer a few years back but for most of his life he owned the Ace hardware store here. His name was Mike chenault and a girl that I was good friends with when we work together at City Hall was married to him. I did some work on his property a couple of times as far as dump truck and backhoe dirt work. Nice to hear some history about her grandfather. I knew he was in the military but I've never heard really any stories of his service. Thank you

It seems that many of the best commanders in the history of the Air Force had similar personalities to Chennault. Men who were thought by the upper command to be "Mavericks" who just wanted to shoot up stuff. But most of these men who defied the top command were exactly right in their tactics and theory's of how military aviation should be used to it's maximum effect. You could say 100 or more names of aggressive fighter pilot's over the years who were very similar to Chennault. Many of whom went on to their own glory. Billy Mitchell comes to mind immediately. A man, who like Chennault, told the upper command that aviation was absolutely a future important component of military force, only to fall on the deaf ears of old time aristocratic background top officers in the militaries around the world who didn't understand the importance and tactical advantage of aviation.

The narrator at 3:41 hints at an interesting fact that the larger airplanes (bmbers) were favored, but doesn't give the relevant years.
It was between 1930 and 1936 that the bigger airplanes with an engine on each wing could fly faster than a single - engine airplane (especially, a bi - plane).
And the prevailing theory was based on an Italian book that taught "the bmber will always get through".

CHENNAULT IS HONORED BY THE CHINESE UNTIL TODAY, EVEN BY PRESIDENT XI AS CHINA'S HERO N FRIEND. CHINA EVEN BUILT A FLYING TIGER MUSEUM TO SHOW THE ETERNAL GRATITUTE OF CHINA TO THE FLYING TIGERS.
