  • Bust is an intimate portrait of families struggling to cope with personal debts as the credit crunch unfolds.
Tracy and Melvyn bought their council house on a low interest mortgage, but with rates soaring they’re now in trouble.
Michael is struggling to afford the help he needs to cope with his lung and heart disease.
Maria is a social worker who took out a loan when she could easily afford the repayments. Now on maternity leave - her creditors are threatening to send in the bailiffs.
We follow these families over a year as they struggle to cope, and battle through the bureaucracy of bankruptcy and repossession.
Real Families brings you stories of modern-day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts. Stay with us for weekly documentaries and full episodes of evergreen family documentaries and parenting TV shows.

We need to create petitions for UBI in every city and go to every university and get it on the ballot in cities first to get the attention! The Solution to the problems would be to tie UBI to GDP at 30% of the GDP and that would be the solution to any problems! Our government can do any budget they want for whatever they want and give money to corporations for trickle down which does not which since they do stock buybacks with that!

Melvin is far too passive, takes his anger out on his wife who is trying her best, and thinks someone else should solve his problems. I feel very badly for his wife who is actually looking for solutions, with what looks like no support from him. He berates her and is rude to her. Can’t see a woman putting up with that nonsense for long. The Caribbean woman is a wonderful Mum. But she should NEVER have taken out a 39% loan on a car (a depreciating asset). This was her big mistake. Where on earth is financial literacy taught in the UK? Michael is determined and manages to keep a sense of humour, which is amazing. I wish them all the best.

Credit cards are fine as long as you PAY THE ENTIRE SUM each month. NEVER EVER only make minimum payments otherwise you're on a fast track to horrendous debt. I'm rubbish at figures and was always bottom in class at school with maths BUT i've never been in debt because I only used my credit card for petrol and food, then paid the balance off every month.

In that way, I paid about £ 4000 without paying interest.

My husband is an at-home dad though now looking for work because living on mine alone has become impossible. But in our parents and grandparents generation it would have been possible… and they talk about how stressful it all is and they argue… but they also realize what they do have. It’s all give and take. And then he talks about his depression. He smiles but he’s not happy and carefree. He’s managing. And that’s me and my husband, too. I don’t see narcissistic in that first husband at all.

I wish the video went into more detail about the situation in 48:44. I will go into it here. When you go bankrupt, all your financial details will be seen by the Official Receiver for the last 6 years or so. Prior to bankruptcy or even being in debt, you need to treat all creditors equally. You aren't technically allowed to pay off one debt quicker than another as you might be accused of showing what is known in English law as "preference". This is why if you speak to some debt charities such as StepChange, if you take out one of their debt solutions such as a Debt Management Plan (DMP), any payments towards it is divided among all the creditors equally.
