    15 years ago I remember running ethernet, phone line and coax for the TV antenna out to the new room in the garage. Now you can get another ethernet switch and plug all your computer stuff in.

    somethings are simple but not straight forward and what a journey to get to the end, but worth it and fully documented every step of the way with nothing cut out with the added pressure of filming too. It good when you can tackle most thing yourself.

    Very well done. Great job on the conduit and waterproof boxes. I bet that you won't have any issues with that not matter what others have said. Please do a follow-up video like in a year or so (if you can remember) to let everyone know how it holds up.
    Whenever I see a do it yourself video it never fails that someone will chime in and tell you that you did it wrong. They know much better how to do it. It makes we wonder what our forefathers did when they had to be self reliant. It's amazing they accomplished anything without a "professional" telling them how to do it properly. 🤣

      i Agree, I don't see why they would sell Cat6 underground cable if it would be an issue. We, shall see. I will update how it is working. Thank you.

    From experience: Use surge arresters. Building to building ethernet is extremely prone being affected by power spikes and nearby lightning strikes, it doesn't even need to be that close.

      Yes, that is a pretty common piece of advice that I have been getting… I have since purchased two lightning arrestors… And I am going to install one on each end of the cable. One in my house and one in the shop building.

    You should have run fiber or done a wireless bridge. The electrical difference between the two buildings will, more than likely, lead to grounding and electrical issues on that ethernet line.

    • @classicarcaderepairs4818
      @classicarcaderepairs4818  8 дней назад

      I did it with the future in mind… Fiber is not available in my area right now, but when it becomes available, it will be no issue running a fiber cable through that PCV so far I’ve raced a couple of times online… Over 100 lap races and have had no issuesso far so good.
      And even beyond that… I don’t understand why they would make an ethernet cable that is meant to be run outdoors and actually buried in the ground… If it was gonna cause issues… That just logically does not make sense to me.

    • @enginerdy

      @@classicarcaderepairs4818Ethernet is isolated by default (it’s transformer-coupled) but for long runs between buildings, the two building grounds can acquire thousands of volts if there is large machinery nearby (like a commuter train) or during a thunderstorm. This large voltage difference can arc across the tiny transformers in the ethernet transceivers and destroy the equipment it’s plugged into.
      Fiber inherently solves this because it is non conductive. You may be ok with this install the way it is, but it might be a good idea to get a lightning arrestor for both sides.

      @classicarcaderepairs4818  8 дней назад +1

      @@enginerdy great advice… I just checked on Amazon and lightning arresters are about 55 bucks… So I will do that and add one to both sides. Thank you.

      Came here to say this. 8-Bit guy was doing something similar between his home and the parent's home which is directly next door. He had a lightning strike on this cable and I'm pretty sure it fried his networking equipment along with some other networked hardware. I believe he replaced it with fiber.

      @@grafxgear Somebody recommended an ethernet surge protector (lightning arrestor) on both ends. I am going to install one on both ends of my line.
      Edit…. Just bought two lightning arrestor units… One for inside my house and one for out in the shop.

      Cat 6 is shielded and has multi twisted pairs, so no problem.

  • @tndabone
    @tndabone 9 дней назад +4

    You are going to have issues with this.. Running ethernet between the buildings gives surges a quick and easy place to bypass ground, and it will follow the cable.
    Usually you should install a section of fiber cable with transceivers at either end. I've replaced so many network switches, etc over the years from people doing this.

    You're probably going to run into issues with the differences in ground potential creating stray voltage on your cable

  • @donepearce
    @donepearce 8 дней назад

    Why ethernet? I've done this job and I used fibre. A cheap media converter at each end and the job was done. No electrics to bury, no susceptibility to lightning, no corrosion issues. The whole job took maybe two hours.

    • @classicarcaderepairs4818
      @classicarcaderepairs4818  8 дней назад

      I’m just doing what I know… I am not an expert. But I did make it forward compatible. It will be a snap to run a fiber cable through my PVC. That’s in the ground… In the future, if that’s something that I want to do it will not be a problem.

    • @donepearce
      @donepearce 8 дней назад +1

      @@classicarcaderepairs4818 Once you have that PVC tube in the ground you can do anything that fits. I would encourage you to put in fibre sooner rather then later. It really has no practical distance limit for full speed operation and being entirely non-metallic, there are no codes that need to be followed.
