General Electric P925 - Is buying a 59 year old radio NIB a bad idea?

- I saw another RUclipsr post a video about the GE P925, brand new sealed in it's packaging and was captivated!
Yes, it is only an AM/SW radio, two bands that I find next to nothing worth listening to, BUT it was also a time capsule! A BRAND NEW 59 YEAR OLD RADIO!
This is a radio that came out YEARS before I was born and it was brand new!
I quickly, searched out other videos about the P925, and then found myself searching for them on eBay, where.. (much to my luck?) I found one and HERE it is!
Originally intended as a "morale" radio for the military does this work or did I buy a 59 year old boat anchor?
@shango066 has a few very interesting videos on the P925 that are worth checking out, and it was his videos that probably triggered my "want" to buy one.
@Revolution21video a video and a bit of a blog post on the P925.
@audubon5425 apparently inspired shango066 to buy HIS P925, check out his video!

Yesterday would have been my Dad's 98th birthday. He had one of these radios!
That's really cool. I see stuff online (RUclips, eBay, etc.) or when I go out to consignment shops and think, gee my grandmother had one of those, or I remember that in the house when I grew up.
This is the exact model that was dropped by the US Government into the countries of the eastern bloc during the Cold War so they could receive Radio Free Europe broadcasts. I have one, its why they have the elaborate vapor barrier packaging
I wonder if that vapor packaging has helped keep the components from deteriorating? It seems there are a few people who have bought this "new" decades later and had luck getting them to work with little to no effort.
I bet it was more "giving free money to GE" then it was effective.
Ron never thinks of extending the telescopic antenna for shortwave. Sigh.
I honestly thought I would get at least static and wondered if I would need to contact clean the switch (which I did). I did try this out on SW later but didn't film it and was pleasantly surprised to pick maybe a 1/2 dozen SW stations with the the mast up. I'll have to do a video at night where I can play around with the SW band a bit more.
There ARE oldies stations on AM. I can listen to two of them here in Concord NH during the day. They're easy to find online. Not many, but broadcasters know about the ambience of AM for the oldies format.
There are some music stations on AM but very few seem to be near enough to me to pull them in clearly during the day.
You need to use the telescopic anttena on shortwave for it to pick up stations
Yes.. I will never live this down.. but honestly I wasn't even getting static and wondered if the band selector switch was even working.
@@RonsRadioCorner-xg2fbgood point 😊
Love the video. I thought you might get some music from 1964 on there ....only joking keep the videos coming
my local AM station plays music one hour every weekday and I try to catch it on this radio just because it seems right!
Very cool!
I suppose it could be the newness factor, but I find I am constantly grabbing this radio and looking to see what I can pull in! It's not the best performer, has NO FM, but it's just fun to be able to use it.
to Ron's Radio Corner: at the 8:05 mark, in your video here, you said "NOT REALLY GETTING ANYTHING ON THE SHORTWAVE BAND!!" **EXTEND THE METAL TELESCOPING ANTENNA TO FULL LENGTH!!** WELL, DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
HERE IS A VIDEO OF THE EXACT SAME RADIO YOU HAVE, BUT WITH THE TELESCOPING SHORTWAVE RADIO ANTENNA FULLY EXTENDED

I thought I would at least get some static and was really wondering if the switch was working. I played it later that same night and pulled in maybe a 1/2 dozen stations. And I have seen that video.
Best watched at higher than Normal speed.
What's NIB?
NIB means New In Box, which was new to me too! I was familiar with NOS - New Old Stock! And if I listened to me, I'd probably speed it up too!
A “radio guy” nor into AM/SW??? Maybe you should change the name of your channel…
I like the "idea" behind radio, maybe the nostalgia behind radio. But, finding something ON radio that I want to listen to is a challenge. It is cool to occasionally scan the dial for some far away channel.
@@RonsRadioCorner-xg2fb perhaps you should try SW, and the basics behind it?
@@KongKingmanTbf, atleast half of it is religious garbage.
