    I took a class on this play and learned that women were so far beneath men in those days that for Shakespeare to even suggest that a husband would approach a discussion with his wife was radical. He would beat her, not talk to her. But in this story the husband works humorously to get her to see her own attitude, and become his partner. This play looks different when set in context. These days it still appears that the character is subservient, but back then it was a big leap forward.
