Tour de France 2021 Stage 13 Highlights | Can Mark Cavendish Equal Eddy Merckx's Stage Wins Record?

  • Опубликовано: 8 июл 2021
  • Stage 13 presents another opportunity for the sprinters to flex their muscles before the race enters the Pyrenees. Mark Cavendish sits just one stage win behind Eddy Merck's stage win record of 34 - could today be the day for the Manx Missile?
    Another day for the sprinters awaits on stage 13, a 220km-long transitional stage from Nîmes to Carcassonne. While a little tougher than the previous day, this stage shouldn’t cause the GC men too much concern and most should be able to sit at the back of the bunch, recovering from their exploits on Mont Ventoux. The sprinters, on the other hand, will need to have their heads screwed on as they barrel towards Carcassonne. This is a long day in the saddle and many riders will smell a chance for a successful breakaway; if the sprinters and their teams give an escape group too much rope then it could go all the way.

      I haven't followed cycling that closely since the 80s but Cav seems to be a very emotional guy himself and it does seem like he is extremely happy with his team and clearly he has been put in the best position from which to execute that he has seen in probably the last five or more years. You can see that he still loves what he does by the way he was greeting the other jersey wearers - he still looks like the new kid in the peloton who can't believe he's in the green

    Brilliant choices there by Quickstep. Mørkøv let an opponent close the gap to the guy out in front and then jumped on to his wheel. One thing is setting up a train, but if things don't work out the way it is planned (here, probably influenced by the slight uphill finish), it's crucial that you make the right decisions and know how to improvise. Mørkøv, finishing 2nd today, is indeed "the best lead out man in the world", as said in this segment.

      The best at what? How many Tours has he won? How many mountain stages? How many times has the time cut been moved to keep him in the race? Sorry, he is a good sprinter, but not an all a rounder like those of the past.

    Tour de France Stage 13
    MARK CAVENDISH, the 'BrahMos Supersonic Cycling Missile was again launched by his lead out team Deceuninck - Quickstep to take Stage 13 in a sublime finish. I just love this boy's never give up attitude just like that indomitable spirit of Lance Armstrong's fight against cancer whilst cycling.

    Great ride from Cav. Why no body armor/pads to protect Tour de France riders?

    • @dudeonbike800
      @dudeonbike800 2 года назад

      You'd die of heat exhaustion or stroke with current protective gear. It's quite a challenge to design cycling clothing to address road rash. If you spare the skin from direct abrasion, you still have burns to deal with. It's probably not feasible to invent body armor that covers everything needing coverage. Overheating is the result. Perhaps some sort of air bag system might do the trick.

    DQS must be loving this coverage they are getting. So many comments comparing Cav to Mercx, its just the number of wins not the type of rider. Nyway Mercx had some added assistance !! 3 times. As for the comments about Merkow slowing down? Merkow knows his job well as did Mark Renshaw, but they judge it so they go max from a certain point and often completely blow metres from the line. I don't think Merkow knew Cav was there as he usually slows sooner but seemed to go on just in case. Renshaw was as good as Merkow and everyone said he could have won many stages yet when he was given sprinter role he really struggled. Not all lead out men can sprint. Take a look at Wiggo leading out in final stage in Paris where he dropped all the lead out trains and Cav cruised in lol Cav is great at doing last few km's at 98% and still sprint last 200m this is why he was also world class endurance rider on the track including TP.

      Half stages counted as full stage wins as well. Everyone needs a little luck to win sometimes, this year it has been the loss of Ewan and Bennett, but you could also reverse it and think about if Cavendish hadn’t lost 5 years to illness and injury, he would probably be out of sight in the record books.

  • @gsync4904
    @gsync4904 2 года назад +4

    Not only Morkov almost won the stage and slowed down to let Cav cross the line first, but many top sprinters from the present days, like Demare and Caleb Ewan, were absent here and over the years others retired (Kittel) or went downhill like Greipel, facilitating Cav's 34 wins in the TdF and allowing him to equal Merck's record. But hey, records are meant to be broken anyway, so let's hope that Mark wins his 35th stage in Paris and surpasses the Cannibal!

    • @lechatel
      @lechatel 2 года назад

      I have rarely read su ch a nonsensical and mean-spirited post. During every career length some rider retire and new ones come along. 1) Kittel....he was dominant for a very short time ....and who knows what would have happened if Cav hadn't crashed at Harrogate. Then of course Cav beat Kittel 4 times in the 2016 tour. The following year the Sagan crash put Cav out of the race and Kittel was able to win multiple stages without Cav there. This happens to ALL competitors. 2) Greipel 'went downhill' it actually shows how impressive Cav is. He beat a young Greipel at the top of his game. 3) Cav beat Ewan this year. So how do we know he wouldn't have beaten him again. I have no clue what you are talking about regarding Demare....he was in this race and Cav won two sprints. It isn't Cav's fault he missed the time cut in the mountains and this denied Cav the chance to beat him yet again.
      The bit about Morkov is rather daft. Morkov was riding because he thought Cav hadn't made his way through. He didn't slow up to let Cav through....he probably didn't even see him until after he crossed the line.
