  • Cool for reasons to be seen and Unique because these fish aren't commonly kept in the aquarium hobby at large. I want to highlight how neat these fish (for those who don't already know) and eventually show how to make a nice setup for them as well.
    I failed to mention in the video where I got these fish. That said, I ordered them from jonahsaquarium.com - I would highly recommend this site. The customer service was pretty good and obviously the fish came in nice and healthy. If you looking for some nice native fish, Jonah's Aquarium is an excellent resource to do so.

    You could probably start live streams for each individual tank with that lofi chillout music on. Chillout music has a decent following and adding a tank to that just makes it better. (Lophee and ChilledCow, for example)

    Me and all my friends keep variations of bream. We live out in the country so we get them for free and we just set up a nice little 40 gallon with some driftwood and tough plants and they live about 10 years. And then we put them in aerated buckets and we show up at one of the friends house and then we show off our fish

    In 2012, I caught a green Sunfish that was nearly 12 inches long and was well over a pound. Took some pics released it, went home and checked the state record. And the state record was .99lbs. I spent the rest of the summer trying to catch that fish and get it certified for the state record, but never caught it again ;(

    Sunfish, yeah... I grew up in north eastern PA in Bradford county, there was a town called Canton, about 15 minutes drive from there way up in the mountains was a fairly large pond, almost a small lake, and it's called Sunfish Pond. Maybe because they're so mean they're the only thing that survives in that pond lol. I know a lot of people go up there to swim, but sometimes you'll see people catching and releasing sunfish, but I'm not sure what kind they were.

    I really liked watching you feed the fish. I used to have a large aquarium but it got too much for me to care for it, due to some health issues. This brought back fond memories. I have a cute story about my tank. One time I turned up the filter to clean the water after I disturbed the gravel. I forgot and when I remembered and came back, the fish were taking turns swimming around the tank and through the fast stream of water coming out of the filter! They would go around and one at a time swim through it WEEEEE and then swim around again and wait their turn. It was amazing, they were playing! This was long ago so I don't have a video of it. I wish I did. It would be so great to see and share. The little fish were playing. It was so sweet.

    Green sunfish are native hear in Michigan. I have a sea wall with rocks and cinder blocks piled up on the side in the water. There was a green sunfish living in the rocks, so I decided I would train him. I would catch grasshoppers, dig up worms, and train him. Then winter came, and he left.

    I haven't had fish for a few years, but watching you and listening to you makes me want to get fish again :D I have 3 tanks still anyway, which I was planning to just put plants in. Maybe I'll set something up, start with some water plants, which I have never done before, and then when those cycle, I'll see if I want to venture into adding fish :D Out of all the fish I've done, stupid enough, my favourite to keep were guppies, because I got to experience taking care of fry and watching them develop their colours was just awesome, too.

    Hey, love your videos, I tried to follow your tutorial for the realistic foam background, the "foam part" was Easy, but the silicone i used (acquarium silicone) was way more dense than what i see in your video, i couldn't spread It on all the foam area and more important the coconut fiber didn't attached in the silicone (i put the coconut fiber something like 5 minutes after the silicone), have you got any idea on how i can solve this problem?

    • @RonanC
      @RonanC 7 лет назад

      Hmm, I never had this problem because I use GE silicone II and not aquarium silicone. You could try and salvage it by recarving the foam and then coating it with a different silicone.

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  6 лет назад +1

      I have kept reptiles in old fish tanks and vise versa for as long as I've kept animals. They do need sanitized in between though. Also going from reptile to fish tank usually calls for a reseal.

    In other parts of the world, aquarists do keep North American species. My guess about their unpopularity here in the U.S.: (1) wildlife regulations which vary from state to state and (2) lower temperature requirements.

      @@SerpaDesign Have you thought about branching off into native cyprinids? Many species would get along just fine with your goldfish. A half dozen golden shiners, for example, would give the tank a bright metallic contrast that you might find attractive alongside the goldfish. They're kind of big but not quite as big as goldfish.
      The rosy red is a naturally occurring color morph of the fathead minnow, and I don't think they would be too hard to breed. The larger sunfish would be happy to take some of them off your hands when you get too many. I actually like the grey ones better, but both colors are nice.
      Mosquito fish would also be a good feeder fish option, but they're trickier to breed in the aquarium. They're poecilids, but unlike guppies, they are ravenous about eating their young. You'd have to be watchful and separate them quickly after birth. In fact when you feed them, it looks like the water is boiling with fish, again unlike guppies. The downside is that they're horrible fin-nippers, so you couldn't keep any with the goldfish.
      Just a thought.

    I'm pretty sure sunfish and bass r part of the cichlid family

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  7 лет назад

      Sunfish are Centrarchidae, which are similar to Cichlid, but not the same from what I understand.

    • @construct3
      @construct3 5 лет назад

      Centrarchids and cichlids have similar personality, size, and body shape. Centrarchids like cooler water than cichlids, and the breeding behavior is different. In most cichlids, both parents protect the nest and the fry. In centrarchids, it's always only the father that protects the nest and fry; he will drive the mother away. It's not a good idea to have other fish in the tank at breeding time, but the aggression level varies considerably among the cichlid species. Some cichlid species can breed successfully in a large enough community tank.
      There are a fair number of sort of peaceful cichlids, but the only centrarchid I'd easily call a "community" fish is the dollar sunfish. Well, bluegills maybe, but they are the largest of the Lepomis species, and they like to be kept in groups. Bluegills take a lot of space.

    Hey I got a question bro it’s about using branches for vivariums that I got outside from my yard when I was doing some maintenance and I picked them up and baked them for about 20 minutes but after a day or two on the side they started to grow like this web like foamy mold I want to know if that’s normal or should i throw them out?
    Also love your videos man I rewatch a lot of them to remember the little tips you always give.

    If they get that big why wouldn't you put them in the 150 gal that makes more sense to me

      As I've said to others, it's not the best option for me short term, but they may end up there eventually.

      Highly not recommended. These were likely captive bred, and introducing isolated populations to each other can be devastating. Captive and wild fish have different immunities and carry different bacterias. It can be devastating to introduce aquarium fish to the wild, even if they are a native species. Even if you harvested them from the wild in the first place, in many states it is illegal to re-release them, or even transfer them to another body of water.
