The younger generation would never know that a mlb pitcher retired 37 batters in a row in the same game without videos like these. It could spark a further interest in the sport.
I'm a boomer from Milwaukee, and I can assure you that the final letter of Lou Burdette's surname was not pronounced as an additional syllable the time. Also first baseman Joe Adcock was pronounced with the first syllable having the emphasis.
You would think that even a bot would listen to the announcers’ pronunciation of Lew Burdette’s and Joe Adcock’s last names! It’s plainly evident in this very video!
I started watching baseball in 1963 when I was 9. I remember having Harvey Haddix card an d reading about that game. What a performance! He is very underrated.
I started watching Cardinals baseball in 1960 when I turned 7 so this was a little before my time but I think it was the comments of this game on one of his Topps baseball cards in my collection bought in the 1960s why I remember this so well. You are right his performance does not get remembered. Others have also lost games despite pitching a no hitter. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the kind words, and I expect to do similar videos in the future but I want to be able to add a bit more substance than I did in this video! I hope to see you in future comment sections for sure!
The greatest pitching performance in MLB history was done by Johnny Vander Meer. He pitched back to back no hitters, a record that will never be broken. To break his record a pitcher would have to pitcher 3 no hitters in a row.
Hard to argue. I was preparing to comment on Vander Meer 's incredible 2 game stretch. If his career had lasted longer would the feat be more well known?
Some more information for you. In 1959 the Pirates had a remarkable record in extra inning games. 19 wins against 2 losses, including this one, the highest winning percentage ever in such games. It helped Elroy Face record an 18-1 record, the highest winning percentage for any pitcher with at least 15 decisions. It is therefore very ironic they could get a run for poor Harvey. After the game some college kids sent him a telegram saying "Tough shit" At first Harvey was angry but later said that those guys had it just about right.
Everyone in this comment section seems to be complaining and nitpicking. But I think this was a great video and you should continue to peruse video making.
These types of comments make my day! I had no experience with script writing, or editing of any kind before starting to make these videos so I am learning as I go, and I believe the quality has only gotten better! Hope to see you in future comment sections!
Smoking was completely accepted in the ‘50s and ‘60s. When being interviewed after games, Yaz would sit at his locker smoking a cigarette and drinking a can of Bud.
What a difference between eras. Today, if a starter pitches 6 innings and allows no more than 3 runs he is considered a prime cut, grade A pitcher. There was a game pitched between Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan where both pitchers pitched 10 innings. Or Ryan's 185 pitch game in 1976 against the WS. Those days are gone.
And it’s hard to discredit the hitters he was against that day because there was 2 literal hall of famers and they also were tipped off to when he was throwing 1 of his 2 pitches
Koufax supposedly once said he considered a "quality start" when this catcher trotted out to shake his hand after he retired the final out in the ninth inning. I tend to agree!
In 1963 Juan Marichal of the Giants beat Warren Spahn of the Braves in a 16 inning game. Both pitchers went the ENTIRE 16 innings with the Giants winning 1-0 on a Willie Mays homer in the 16th. Marichal allowed only 8 hits and Spahn 9. That to me is the greatest game ever pitched.
I listened on the radio in SF to Marichal's NL debut against the Phillies. He had a no-hitter going through to the ninth inning, when Clay Dalrymple legged out an infield hit. I was just a kid, but I'd have killed Dalrymple (kidding) if I could have.
The next morning at the breakfast table,my mother had laid out the sports section of the Newark Star-Ledger,here in North Jersey.(The Sopranos made that paper famous) In any event, the headline read:HADDIX PITCHES PERFECT GAME. These games were not commonplace at the time. Most hitters of that era concentrated on making contact.
Can definitely do that, but I cannot lie that most of it came from a RUclips video. Will update the description with the video link for that when I am home.
Appreciate the kind words! I will just continue doing my thing and making better content and hopefully that happens naturally lol. This type of content is super fun for me to research/make !
You are right. Good catch. Also, Dick Grote is not pronounced like 'goat' but is 'grow-tee'. Younger sports fan miss those nuances. Thanks for saying something about that.
Fun video but speaker needs to get Burdette's name right! I did ot know about the Bob Buhl comment, smoking by Haddix and about the reinterpretation of no-hitter. Not sure how that affects the perfect innings though. Maybe someone can explain.
Dude . Kids who love baseball read all the stories about BB history. Another great one is Sandy Koufax in the 1963 World Series, he unlike Kerry Wood faced the American League champions , and 62 World Champions New York Yankees. Struck out 15??. Many Hall of Famers on the Yankees
Smoking for those Generation's was nothing really regarded as being different. Or odd. Jack Lambert smoked on the sidelines during Steelers games, it's just how Men were back then.
I'M SORRY ..... the GREATEST EVER? Don Larson threw a PERFECT GAME, 27 up & 27 down, IN A WORLD SERIES GAME .... and that was the ONLY time it was accomplished EVER ! Let us use hyperbole with some measure of care and uniqueness !
Lew Berdette's name is pronounced BUR-DET. (rhymes with "bet"). Mispronouncing a person's name in a RUclips video is disrespectful. Far too many RUclipsrs mispronounce the name of athletes of yesteryear. For example, a RUclips search of "Lew Burdette" produces MANY videos wherein Lew's name is pronounced correctly.
You being this mad over my own videos is pretty hilarious. If you don’t like it, no one is forcing you to watch, no one said they would be perfect videos from the start….
@@Schubesss And indeed no one ever would. NOWHERE did I imply I was being forced to watch; that would be cruel and unusual punishment. Maybe you should spend more time learning to speak and less melting down over obvious flaws.

What happened, did you flunk History in high school? An appreciation of history provides life-enhancing knowledge and is essential in understanding the world we live in today. History matters.
If you don't love the history of the game, do you really love the game? In the 70s I got a baseball card commemorating Haddix's feat in a Topps pack. And my neighbor and I used to play a board game that introduced us to Nap Lajoei, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, Mordecai 3 finger Brown, Chief Bender, Walter Johnson etc . Their stats just boggled our 12 year old minds. What memories! Thanks for this awesome footage. You're doing a fine job bro!. That negative poster probably got HBP often. ⚾🏏Go Rays and Reds.
@@RWGish Exactly! I run across the disparagement of history all the time. I think the people who say it's not essential to know about the past probably have trouble memorizing facts, dates, etc., which is okay. I don't fault them for that, but don't argue that history doesn't matter. I don't sing well, but I don't then say, "Music is not important." I just wish I could carry a tune.

"Lesser known gems"? You've got to be kidding. Haddix's performance is legendary.
Yeah Neil Armstrong had one of the lesser known walks when he was on the moon.
You think this is widely known?

Kerry Wood’s 20 K game surely is historic. Roger Clemens did it TWICE.
Never heard the Haddix song before thanks! I have a Haddix card for that year and my grandsons can't believe the story of that game.
I had never heard of the baseball project before researching their video. I’d give their catalog a listen if you’re a fan of baseball!
Definitely a part two about the after effects!
good job on presentation..and i am guessing a majority of folks did not know of this feat, let alone, his name..

Just basically changes what it is classified as in the record books and as a result not many people see this when looking at perfect games is all!
I talk about it, I have a Harvey Haddix collection, and I even dedicate May every month to celebrate "Harvey Haddix Month" on my channel. So there.

Like the Patriots going 18-0 before getting beat in the Super bowl.
2:58 1957 WS Braves program cover is something to behold - yikes
No one talks about? Are you serious? I've heard about Haddix's game a million times.
Don Larsen 27 up 27 down, no runs no hits and no errors.
Harvey is proof that 13 is an unlucky number.
Bitching about people watching the videos and not subscribing gets an automatic down vote from me

always risky filming in the locker room (six : forty one)
it's pronounced burr-det
Lew Burdette.

Don't want to break your heart..... but Pirates and others smoked cigs into the 80's.
