Excellent review - agree with you on the cost - but it's worth it when it comes to your own safety - would be good if the switch could be ditched and they wired directly into the headlight wiring so we're always on - thanks
I love those genuine Yamaha parts, well build and purpose made with decent instructions! Installed a radiator protector and crashbars on my '22 Tracer 7 and took me little over an hour taking my time. Now I want to install the fog light kit (BS2-854A3-00-00 ). Its weird because your vid is 5 years old and they still sell the exact same kit for the '22 model Tracer 7. Great explanatory vid btw!!
I believe my 6" Rigid LED light bar will fill and tuck underneath the dash perfectly, much in the same config you've done here. That bar will throw around 3200 Lumens. I have it now on my 2012 Super Tenere'. Cost was a tick over $200. PIAA, IMHO is waaay over-rated. Had friends that had them on several BMW RT's back in the day and they worked fine - just so flippin' pricey.
Fantastic upgrade and really functional. You're ready to go in the dark now. It's as if it's stock design, so perfection achieved. You're awesome. Hope it's not bothering you when you remember the price 😝 Were you able to share this video with the guy who posted the original video when he goes off the road at a right bend. Adding a personal experience. Coincidentally I have a Yamaha FZ-25 with LED and the total output is just 35w but it's just a bad design with a weak intensity and a low adjuster angle from the factory. Non projected LEDs never do the justice. Anyway, i travel to work mostly at nights and while coming home on a dark street had the loose hanging electrical wires from the tree touch my left side mirror and handlebar, thanks to the LED, i really was about to dash into the high sidewalk wall and a speeding taxi behind me made me really nervous. Luckily i sped up against the cable with a tightening grip after i sensed. Came out with no damage except for left indicator cover break and a loose mirror. Half the indicator was gone (plastic broke due the force but the holding nut saved the other half, really wierd) and only noticed this the next morning. Decided to change it to a halogen and I'm really happy. It's a round headlight with self adjusted beam with customised holding clamps. Glass housing makes it bear the heat output of a 55w Osram Classic bulb. Didn't like to use the older spare Philips Xtreme Vision Plus bulb from my older car. Now I'm almost there where you're. Except i really paid for customising the clamps and not the light itself. So i know the feeling. Just wanted to add this experience after posting sometime back due to similar situation as yours 🤗
Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos, really informative stuff! Fortunately I don't do much night riding because that's crazy money for a couple of lights!
I really like your videos! Very helpful in fixing up my new FZ-09 with the new brake pads etc. It seems like extra lights up front will help prevent people from turning left in front of me (how my last motorcycle accident occurred).
Mate your video's are great. I wish you did a video for the light bulb change for the 2014 model. The instructions in the manual advise to remove grommets that were a nightmare to replace.
Since purchasing my FJ-09 a few months ago, I've wanted to get these (even knowing the cost)...however, I'm wondering if fog/running lights mounted to my GIVI Engine Guard Bars might be a "smarter" idea. Viewing the video, I do see that the Yamaha/PIAA fog lights do add a considerable amount of light over the headlight, alone, but, at the same time, I noticed there's a "problem" when turning. Yes, the amount of light is increased, but the light to the side of turning still doesn't appear to be enough...for example, when the road curves to the left, you can see the center-line, but only slightly more than "barely". With lights mounted to the engine guard bars, the light pattern should be spread over a wider area, plus it would be "stationary" to the forks. Currently, I'm considering two different options: 1) Hi/Lo LEDs, such as something along the lines of the Denali D2 2.0 TriOptic, (can be wired to function directly with the headlight's Hi/Lo switch, or the Hi/Lo can be operated manually/independently of the headlights): 2) SAE-compliant lights with auto Hi/Lo dimming. Personally, I'm leaning towards option #1, but, if anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly consider them. I'd prefer to keep cost down, if possible, but, at the same time, quality, lumen output, and size (smaller housing is better than larger, again, due to planned engine guard bar mounting) is of somewhat greater importance than price. Besides, there IS a difference between being "low-priced", and just plain "cheap". Cheap is usually indicative of low(er) quality, while low-priced can still be high(er) quality. So, shout out your best suggestions.
I think bikes like this should come with some form of gyroscopic headlights. So the beam stays horizontal even when cornering. If not from the factory then something like these for lights but with a gyro inside to keep the beam flat when cornering would be ideal.
You shouldn't need an extra light kit in the first place. I can't believe that the stock lights are that bad from the factory. Seems like the bike should have spent an extra day with some engineers before they released it.
This is the downfall of HID and now the newer LED headlight systems. They are so bright that they require a very sharp cut off to meet DOT regs and the combination exacerbates the problem on motorcycles making looking through the turn nearly impossible on a bike. The high contrast makes the dark section above the cutoff visually pitch black because your eyes can't adjust. Not much of a big deal on cars since they don't really lean to go around corners. The large reflector halogens on my 05 FJR are still way better in corners than the FZ-09 even with these fog lights added. LED headlights on motorcycles are good for power draw the "cool" factor but that's about it. The are decent for riding straight but there is such a negative impact when in corners they are practically dangerous. My 06 R6 with halogens unfortunately has reflector design with similar cutoff pattern and its damn near scary riding in tight technical curves after dark. I hoped the FZ would be better when I purchased it but sadly it is as bad if not worse. TwoWheelObsession, Can you tell me do the Fogs in this kit stay on when turning on the High beams? Maybe it was in the Vid and I missed it.
wow.. that's a great setup! I do agree that $500 is a lot to ask for a simple LED light kit.. but the convenience of OEM look and fit might sway people to them despite the price.
I have to say they are better, but not that much..With the original lights, is just a matter of get use to it....Lots of bikes are like that...Never have issue, apart of suspension....Thanks for good vídeos....
Great video mate, thank you! A few questions: -6+ months in how to you rate the improved visibility? -If you could, would you switch them in line with full beam (I.e. logical Fog "AND" Beam to trigger) so that you could dim for oncoming traffic? -Do you think mounting them more substantially to the forks would work better in terms of width of throw and jitter stability? -What color of underwear do you wear 😂.. Just kidding!
Thank you so much for this video! I do a ton of night riding, just bought an MT-09 and the stock headlights are terrifying. Question for anyone reading this... my husband is concerned about tinkering with the wiring/electrical, and installing anything that might be an additional drain on the battery. Thoughts on this?
Have you seen any of the Baja Designs S2 pro driver/combo lights? I have played with them on a buddys truck and get that they are spread further apart but wow do they throw a wide pattern that picks up the road well and throws far enough out brighter and farter than my bikes stock lights. By the time you purchase the PIAA light bar and the S2 pro's its still looking at 460.00 for a two light setup but the light output is without question better than the PIAA fog. A single will fit perfectly just below and center of the stock lights but I am not sure if one is enough. It just aggravates me that the stock lights are so bad on the 2017. I do live in the country and commute on many miles of unlit twist roads and just dont feel safe when its pitch black dark.
Nice video...I think you may have aimed them too high since you had the bike on a a stand while aiming them. Have you had any cars high beaming you as you past them?
Well done I will have to do something similar. Did you have your high beams on when on that dark road? The other problem is if you have to dip for oncoming vehicles the fog lights will still be on, so hopefully don't dazzle the oncoming driver.
Here in Oz we often ride roads with no street lighting. You use your high beams and whatever else you have, you then switch to low beam when you detect an oncoming car. When they pass you switch back to high. High are your full lights and lows are dipped lights for oncoming cars. That's why I would worry if the fogs are still on and dazzling oncoming traffic, they could be wired to the highs to avoid this problem. Try your dark road again using highs and you will find it much better. However even on highs my Honda interceptor has your problem of disappearing corners and I will have to fit extra lights. Love your videos.
Sorry but either you didn't watch the whole vid where I show the highs or you don't know how this bike is setup. It has 4 projectors stock - 2 high two low. The highs are a small circle centered just above the low mark. That's it.
TwoWheelObsession I saw both and yes your highs are crap in corners like mine but ride that road with highs and fogs will be much better than lows and fogs.
Just double checking I went to the site you listed and the "MT is the same as our "FZ"? Also what kit does the wiring come in the light kit or the mounting kit?
Hey there, just a quick question as you are quite knowledgeable about this bike, there is a second connector on the left is that correct? Is the connector the same as the connector on the right that you connected these fog lights to? Any advise will be much appreciated. Thanks
Hi mate, what comes in the hardware kit? Is it just the mount or is it the wiring as well. I have another set of lights in mind but want to be sure I will have all of the wiring needed. Damn Yamaha Aus won't tell me a thing.
I'm wondering if these fog lights would function better in corners if mounted to the bike frame instead of front forks? I'm thinking of mounting them similar to how they mount fog lights on adventure bikes, think BMW GS.
TwoWheelObsession I’m guessing there’s no way you can mount these lights to the frame then? Or maybe you think it wouldn’t be aesthetically pleasing to you?
TwoWheelObsession Oh, I see that you have a video in your playlist. Thanks. I was asking because Honda has an accessory that is plug and play. It is also switched so that your battery doesn't carry a load when the ignition is off. It mounts under the rear seat or on the handlebar.
Definitely not worth it for $500. The stock light is just fine when going straight or in the city, the problem is at aggressive lean angles. No offense but you weren't pushing very hard at all and I still lost sight through those turns for me to be comfortable. As someone who rides primarily at night and absolutely hates the stock headlight in that environment, this looks like a complete waste of money. Does anyone have experience with any other options?
Shouldn't have to be forced into spending an additional 500 to make up for a manufacturers poor design. Yamaha should be putting these on for free for every FZ09 they sell.
I really appreciate that you show how bright the light is and not just how to mount
Awesome! I may wait for an after market option bc $500 isn't even practical to me personally. But an upgrade is a must for sure
500 dollars for 2 lights.. insane. Looks great though.
Excellent review - agree with you on the cost - but it's worth it when it comes to your own safety - would be good if the switch could be ditched and they wired directly into the headlight wiring so we're always on - thanks
The spare screw is for the price! Thanks for a great install and for taking your beautiful MT 09 out on wet streets for us.

They look great but wow the cost is crazy!!!
That was awesome. That upgrade was very necessary and yes it is worth it. Because it will save your but in a no light road.
Amazing review. Never quite seen an install/test/AND ride video. Awesome stuff man! I'll have to pick up this kit soonish. Looks like awesome quality!
Mate your video's are great. I wish you did a video for the light bulb change for the 2014 model. The instructions in the manual advise to remove grommets that were a nightmare to replace.

MurphyTheBandChild completely agree. one real world ride at night would have made it clear that the lighting doesn't work for a tight bend
Oh, I agree 100%.
This is the downfall of HID and now the newer LED headlight systems. They are so bright that they require a very sharp cut off to meet DOT regs and the combination exacerbates the problem on motorcycles making looking through the turn nearly impossible on a bike. That's the longest clap of thunder I have heard in a long long time.
Pretty much every day around here in rainy season :)
Thanks mate great install & info video, much appreciated
Great video! Is it possible that "extra" silver screw was for mounting the piece to your frame after you drilled the hole as per the instructions?
+Jason Thayer maybe, but it shows a ziptie who knows lol
And just to be clear, they don't say to dfrill a hole - they just SHOW a hole on the diagram, with the part ziptied through it.
I have to say they are better, but not that much..With the original lights, is just a matter of get use to it....Lots of bikes are like that...Never have issue, apart of suspension....Thanks for good vídeos....
I think that two 4" (or one 7" with 2 fastenings) led lights from Amazon might be brighter. Maybe even the existing bracket will be ok for mounting.
There are plenty of lights that will be brighter - and all will look bad if you care about matching the bike at all.
Is that spare screw for the relay? Good video. Thanks.
Looks like it to me!
I guess that extra screw was for the harness after you drill the hole 👍
I don’t think these are available anymore. Got a new link for them? Ty
I Wouldn't pay $300 for them. Thank you for this video
Great video, but that mounting bracket looks like crud.
Great video mate, thank you!
A few questions:
-6+ months in how to you rate the improved visibility?
-If you could, would you switch them in line with full beam (I.e. logical Fog "AND" Beam to trigger) so that you could dim for oncoming traffic?
-Do you think mounting them more substantially to the forks would work better in terms of width of throw and jitter stability?
-What color of underwear do you wear 😂.. Just kidding!
Same as when they went on, they solve the problem simple as that. They don't blind drivers no need to do anything. There is zero jitter.
TwoWheelObsession thanks!
There is plenty of extra juice to add and LED lighting you want.
Thank you!
Have you seen any of the Baja Designs S2 pro driver/combo lights? I have played with them on a buddys truck and get that they are spread further apart but wow do they throw a wide pattern that picks up the road well and throws far enough out brighter and farter than my bikes stock lights. Is there anywhere else to buy this kit. My local dealer parts department refuses to believe this kit exists and won’t look up anything.
How many watts of these lights?
Do you increase fuse?
Looks Good
Nice video...I think you may have aimed them too high since you had the bike on a a stand while aiming them. Have you had any cars high beaming you as you past them?
Nope they are perfect
Hi, I have a vfr800f 2017, do you have any tips on where, how and what type of support, to install an aux light on my bike?. Thanks in advance
Wow expensive but NICE!! Thanks for sharing
Why not just turn on the hi beams & turn it off when you see the oncoming traffic instead??
Well done I will have to do something similar. Did you have your high beams on when on that dark road? The other problem is if you have to dip for oncoming vehicles the fog lights will still be on, so hopefully don't dazzle the oncoming driver.
+Peter Clifford no, I never run the highs.
Here in Oz we often ride roads with no street lighting. You use your high beams and whatever else you have, you then switch to low beam when you detect an oncoming car. When they pass you switch back to high. High are your full lights and lows are dipped lights for oncoming cars. I also show how the highs do absolutely nothing in curves in the first test vid ruclips.net/video/kzROoU1Ta04/видео.html
TwoWheelObsession I saw both and yes your highs are crap in corners like mine but ride that road with highs and fogs will be much better than lows and fogs.
Can these parts be sourced anywhere else’s other than the dealer. My dealer refuses to locate them.
Would u mind posting the model numbers for the lights and the mounting kit?
Brilliant vid thanks 🙏🏻
Just double checking I went to the site you listed and the "MT is the same as our "FZ"? Also what kit does the wiring come in the light kit or the mounting kit?
Yes the same. The wires are part of the lights. They are not a separate part.
I'm checking the UK site and there's no details, are these Yamaha brand or the PIAAs?
Yamaha
TwoWheelObsession did you purchase the mounting bracket separately or did that come with the lights along w the wiring harness?
$275 for a set of Denali spot lights, brackets and flood adapter gets you in for $350 w/ as much or more light output.
True but doesn’t look as good.
That's subjective.
Are these compatible with 2020 models as well???
Hey there, just a quick question as you are quite knowledgeable about this bike, there is a second connector on the left is that correct? Is the connector the same as the connector on the right that you connected these fog lights to? Any advise will be much appreciated.
Thanks
The left is fused differently, it's for the heated grips.
TwoWheelObsession Thanks for the advise, is it the same type of connector as the right side? Do you think it would be suitable for a DC power outlet?
Yes and sure you could do that
TwoWheelObsession Thank you for your help
Does it fit 2015 MT09?
Awesome bro keep it up
European get some many more accessories for this bike. GRRRR. Nice video though, love the bracket.
Yep, I HATE how Yamaha does this with bikes. You have to shop Europe, Canada AND Australia to see everything available. No single market has them all!
Hi mate, what comes in the hardware kit? Is it just the mount or is it the wiring as well. I have another set of lights in mind but want to be sure I will have all of the wiring needed. Damn Yamaha Aus won't tell me a thing.
The mount is just the mount and bolts. The wires are all part of the lights
Well played Yamaha, well played. In Australia they cost the best part $750 for both components. Thanks for the info and video.
Yeah, the guy that priced them should be kicked in the nutz.
Do you have any video showing how to remove the mt09 2017 chainguard for cleaning? Thank you
+G Bravo you dont need to remove it for chain cleaning.
If it's similar to the 2014 model it's only 3 bolts and loosening the gear box rod. Just take your time.
I'm wondering if these fog lights would function better in corners if mounted to the bike frame instead of front forks? I'm thinking of mounting them similar to how they mount fog lights on adventure bikes, think BMW GS.
Any lights work better frame mounted.
TwoWheelObsession I’m guessing there’s no way you can mount these lights to the frame then? Or maybe you think it wouldn’t be aesthetically pleasing to you?
Great job
Will this set work for the FJ-09?
how to mount the switch for FJR? I am search high n low for a position to place the switch... :(
thanks for sharing
Great video! Question: Is there a factory USB charger accessory?
No, I added my own, see it's video.
TwoWheelObsession "See it's video." Typo?
TwoWheelObsession Oh, I see that you have a video in your playlist. Thanks. I was asking because Honda has an accessory that is plug and play. It is also switched so that your battery doesn't carry a load when the ignition is off. It mounts under the rear seat or on the handlebar.
@@chitownbikerboymotovlog467 there is on factory USB accessory now
Is there just no way that anyone could make a replacement led bulb that could be swapped in the housing, one that can provide a wider pattern ??
Where can I still buy this?
Love it
How are these plastic pins called?
Could you please let me know where can I buy this kit ? Perhaps you could provide a link or model #. Thanks
Read the description.
you don't ride your motorcycle when it rains ? just curious, if haven't until now you should take out in the rain.
+pradeep kumar that's not what I said.
I can’t find this kit anywhere.
@TwoWheelObsession will this kit work on the 2016 XSR900?
no
TwoWheelObsession well shit.....
hi,
you connect it to the plug for grip warmer?
No each has its own
which gopro are you using? I think the 5 has manual shutter and iso, should help somewhat
+APowerfilms it's all or nothing.
Could you retro fit this on a 2014???
how long did it take to receive these? I ordered mine two weeks ago.
+Garry S a couple weeks
TwoWheelObsession just got it today. the box was extremely damaged and soaked. repacked twice. luckily everything works
Theres a ball flaoting in the right up site
Just get light from harbour freight
Just one question, why arnt you using brights on a road like this? That's what they are there for
If you had one of these bike you would know why. They are just a small concentrated circle center top. They do nothing for the problem.
piaa 1100p?
Can you fit this to MT09 version 2014? Thanks
+SHMA no
nice video as usually. Why aren't you my neighbor? :) thank you perfect
I wonder would these work on my MT10???
wondering the same.
Insanely expensive. There must be a viable 3rd party option?
Not yet
Will the light kit fit the 2016 MT09?
+slikmonk I don't know if it would have the power lead or have the clearance. It's only listed for the new model
Even at $350 it’s still about $150 more than they’re worth.
I just bought the whole kid for 400 shipped.
I could not bare the sight of that on my bike but to each their own.....
Believe me I'm in the same boat. I REALLY wish it wasn't needed.
I think it looks badass. Adds a little adventure bike look to it. Unique
Pia and Denali are way overpriced. Harbour freight light is 10 percent the cost and much better .
LINK???
Shouldn't have to be forced into spending an additional 500 to make up for a manufacturers poor design. Yamaha should be putting these on for free for every FZ09 they sell.
