And the movie explores so many types of love!! Not just romantic but love of parental figures like Harold, toxic/superficial love by the Duke, love of art, love of country
I agree with a lot of this. Except for their opinion on Roxanne. It is by far my favorite in the movie and one of my favorite movie musical moments ever. Plus if you watch the Canadian Ice Dancing performance to this song from from 2018… chills.
^ This!! Roxanne is the BEST sequence in this movie and no one can tell me otherwise. Of course the end with Christian singing in the theatre is a close second, but it's just incredible. And the Virtue/Moir performance is absolutely iconic
I agree Roxanne was my favorite song when I first watched it as a youngin. It’s the only thing I have left from my uncle who came out when I was young.
1) This movie is the definition of “camp”. It’s over the top and crazy, but if you’re paying attention, there is a point to the madness. 2) Keith talking about being hilariously straight has me laughing so hard I’m crying 😂😂😂😂😂 Edit: I’m going to fight them all on El Tango Roxanne. That song slaps, it’s DRAMA, Ewan giving us a PERFORMANCE. 👏🏼😤
John Leguizamo actually plays a real artist named Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He was eccentric, drunk and smoked. Very much poor, however his artwork was influential to the Post-Impressionist/Art Nouveau moment.
Also Lautrec was around 5ft tall as an adult so not technically a little person based on that alone (his growth was stunted due to injury/genetic condition as a child)… I was surprised that people who consider themselves to be such big fans of the movie wouldn’t know who Leguizamo was portraying. Lautrec was a tragic figure who was famous for his paintings of the figures he encountered at the Moulin Rouge.
the only bit I would like to add is Lautrec was not really poor. He was from a very affluent family in Alby or Aldy (I dont remember the name exactly but i've been there in the house he was born). Being disable he was discriminated in the city, by the family and when he moved to Paris he was trying to scape that stigma.
I was surprised that Eugene was not on this podcast. But the fact that he would protest and not be on cuz he truly believes it is not a guilty pleasure movie. Lolz
I love that even though Zach didn't love the movie, he could happily ask questions and listen to the others' comments. He expressed his dislike without trying to make the others feel bad about their taste! It's a rare thing to see!
STOP THE RECORD AND REWIND THAT--you guys…if u are collectively shading Roxanne I am gonna need u to seriously rewatch that part it’s soooo good. imagine singing it - it’s raw af and dancing that tango💃🏽 master class.I was with u but now we cannot go back 😧💜
Keith talking about being in Marching Band and watching things like this and Monty Python is like the quintessential description of marching band geeks in the early 00s! 🤣
Every so often on this podcast I question Zach's taste in movies and the moment he said he didn't get Moulin Rouge and he started saying the love story felt cheap....his opinion in things lost all credibility to me
I couldn’t agree more. I appreciate his arguments, but they are invalid. Zach always portrays himself as such a movie snob but watching/listening to this podcast has only proven to me that his taste in movies is as credible as his fashion sense.
I actually think the Roxanne cover is my favorite and I really like the gruff voice contrast and the little violin solo with the tension of the scene. *Chef's kiss*
The comment about Ewan McGregor singing in the Star Wars prequels made something wonderful/horrific pop into my head, and now I must curse you all with it: Anakin on Mustafar. Burning as a charred lump. Obi-Wan looks down at him from the high ground and bursts into song (in true Moulin Rouge cinematic/musical cover style): "Ani, are you okay? Are you okay? Are you okay, Ani?"
Also, sorry but it’s not based on a true story. The location is real, Satine is based on a famous can-can dancer, but the love story is not a true account. It’s actually inspired by Greek mythology story of Orpheus and Eurydice as well as heavily influenced by the opera LaBoheme
In addition to those, it is also inspired by the opera La traviata which is inspired by a semi-autobiographical novel La Dame aux Camélias. The true story Kelsey is referring to is likely the author of that novel and Marie Duplessis!
Kelsey always makes claims like this on this podcast. She preaches some big story but it’s never credible or correct. It’s happened many, many times. I know this is just a fun-times podcast, but she needs to do her research beforehand.
^^ this happens constantly w kelsey. She asserts things SO strongly without pause of fact checking or self-pause I love her presence but it’s made it impossible for me to listen to her personal podcast
The way that Keith describes the cycle of love and storytelling at the end of the movie feels exactly how Hadestown talks about it, as well!! Both Moulin Rouge and that show make great comments about why stories are worth telling and hope is worth having over and over again!
Kelsey going "Oh the OG Romeo and Juliet!“ about the 1996 Buzz Luhrmann movie is so funny to me.. I kinda know what she meant, but she's talking about a play from the 16th century lmao... It wasn't even the first Romeo and Juliet movie ever made!
To be fair, Zach, I had to watch the movie like 3 or 4 times before I finally got it. Each time I focused on a different aspect and then fell in love with it. Also didn’t hurt that it was our show for marching band my freshman year of high school so there was no escape. 😅
Come What May always breaks my heart. A girl I used to know from high school went missing and was found murdered. The whole town got together to find her so they had a very public funeral and CWM was her song so it soared across our broken souls. It’s heartbreakingly sad
I totalllly get what Keith is saying - this movie was an introduction to a world I didn’t know even existed and made me fall in love theatre - this will always be a pleasure for me!!
I am so happy with this episode. This is the first time where I feel that this podcast has lived up to the name “guilty pleasures” because you could tell how much Kelsey and Keith love it! Zac kept trying to go back to wanting to hate everything, but they brought it back to the pleasure of the movie. That, to me is the definition of a guilty pleasure. You love something so much regardless of how cheesy, lame, or whatever other guilty thing that people tear it down for doesn’t matter, YOU still love it! Moulin Rouge is a masterpiece and this did it justice!
This probably my favorite Guilty Pleasures episode. Moulin Rouge was a obsession of mine when it came out lmao . Keith mentioning how this movie speaks to theater kids absolutely agree!! The duke was in Elvis btw he was his dad… John L character was based off an a real artist that visited Moulin Rouge and broke his legs as a child and hindered his height… awesome episode!
For me, Moulin Rouge is one of those movies where I know exactly what’s to come and still bawl my eyes out till the credits end. It’s just one of movies that include love, tragedy, lust, jealousy and heartbreak and pulls you in effortlessly. Not for the close minded ❤️
the roxanne sequence and the song before it (no spoilers) were my absolute favorite parts of the stage musical. i found myself thinking "this is fun but i don't need to see it again" for the whole show... but the craziness and production of those two songs together had my jaw on the floor and made me want to watch THOSE TWO NUMBERS over and over and over and over again
Holy Fuck!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Nicole Kidman was the most beautiful woman I ever saw when I first watched the movie when I was 5. Edit: Also showed me that Ewan McGregor is one of the best actors that can belt his heart out when it comes to singing holy shit
You know, at first I wasn’t sure if I was going to vibe with this pod bc I’m not a big movie person. But honestly, I still enjoy listening to them! Way to go Zach for taking up space and sharing what he loves with all of us! I love how Zach and Keith have just flourished since the “consolidation” of the Try Guys 😅
Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie ever. It’s pure pleasure. I first saw it in a beautiful old timey theater with a curtain and balconies and the most perfect atmosphere in my freshman year of college and went back every Friday for 7 weeks straight. It is all truth, beauty, freedom, love. Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor are at their MOST beautiful, it’s an incredible sensory experience. It’s a perfect movie.
I will now be referring to windmills as “light houses with the spinny thing,” so thank you Kelsey. P.S. Absinthe is not actually hallucinogenic, never was, BUT it was often toxic when made cheaply in order to achieve the green color…
As someone who saw this film 3 times in theatres in 2001 and has loved this film ever since, (“Because she doesn’t love you!! …Him. She doesn’t love him.”) I love that you chose to discuss the chaos this glorious film is; I also think we need to discuss the cultural appropriation of Indian culture in “Spectacular, Spectacular,” because it is blatantly there and deserves acknowledgement.
I LOVE Moulin Rouge. Maybe because Zach didn't see it closer when it came out to feel it like it was then he didn't get it? I just know that everything about the movie played into it being the greatest love story of all time, that all the greatest love songs must be in it because nothing else would do. All the strongest emotions, all the most vibrant colors, everything. it's gorgeous!
My favorite guilty pleasures episode yet. I need to go watch moulin rouge right after this because it's one of my absolute favorites. It brought me to the thought about how much I love that movie and Repo The Genetic Opera. Vote that you have a Repo episode PLEASE!!!! Omgggg
Moulin Rouge is my favourite movie and watching that on my 13th birthday was such a formative experience for me and set up my taste in everything. Keith mentions it later but Wicked was my second formative experience like this!
My very favorite filmed choreography was in the movie, Oliver! At the end of "Consider Yourself," they do an aerial shot of the entire outdoor market dancing, then when the song ends, everyone is immediately back to working/shopping in the market! It's just so amazing to see!
Some of my favorite guilty pleasures i fully believe will make hit episodes: HAIRSPRAY musical (2007) (James Gunn's) Scooby Doo live action (2002) 🔥💌🔥 Love the show!
So Zach didn't know this was a real place, I'm guessing he also doesn't know the Toulouse-Lautrec was a real person being portrayed in this movie as he makes fun of a little person with a lisp???
I know this is a Guilty Pleasures podcast and it’s all in fun, but sometimes I legit get frustrated when they don’t do their research. Especially at the end when Zach is rattling off fun facts. You looked those up! Why can’t you do the actual research? They get SO much wrong on a regular basis. It’s so frustrating to me.
Kelsey talking about the rupture of a primary attachment hits differently after her video today. Much love queen ❤️ you are my Chelsea handler (I actually don’t know Chelsea handler like that but I like YOU like that and I think you like her like that so I hope it’s a good reference
I don't have time to rewatch this movie right now to make sure I'm right, but I'm almost positive you guys are missing a *very* important part of the plot in regards to the "paying his wh*re" scene as that scene IS PART OF THE PLAY ITSELF! Christian isn't just saying those things to be as mean as he possibly can - while he is trying to hurt Satine, his words are part of the play as a whole and the audience should know this given they've been watching the entire play. "Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous obsession with love" is verbatim what Christian says when he's both writing the play in the middle of the movie and through his sobs while throwing money at Satine's feet. (Side note: when Christian is "paying his wh*re" on stage, he's doing it because their real life is now mimicking the play, when until that moment, it'd been the play mimicking their real lives.)
Another Ewan McGregor singing movie is Down with Love starting him, Renee Zellweger, and Sarah Paulson. It's very old school and the outfits are incredible. The singing doesn't happen until the end, but it's pretty fun.
I just saw the musical on Broadway 2 days ago, with Derek Klena and Oyoyo Joi. It was spectacular, I had friggin chills, especially during Tango Roxanne! I actually think Derek Klena is better than Aaron Tveit too (I actually specifically went now to see him in the role)! And originally I was a little upset I wasn’t seeing Ashley Loren but Oyoyo Joi was just wow, I’m so happy she was Satine when I saw it! P.S. if u listen to the clip of Derek Klena singing Tango Roxanne on RUclips, that clip was recorded right when he took over the role. Now that he’s adjusted and the show is adjusted, he is literally incredible and options up so easily
John Leguizamo played Toulouse Letrec one of the characters who was a real person. He wasn't a little person, he had a condition that when he was younger broke his leg and after it no longer grew. Later on ended up breaking the other and it as well didn't grow properly. He was the artist that painted the Moulin Rouge posters.
I watched this movie on an international flight years ago and loved it. Tried to re-watch it while stoned and I couldn't get through the opening scene lol
So lucky to have this movie play for one showing on my birthday, two weeks ago. Brought a guy I was crushing on thinking it would be romantic kissy kissy stuff but we were both too enthralled. One if both of our favorites.
OK, so a few things: it is pronounced "YOU-an" (not OOO-an, or EEE-wan). The character's name who runs the Moulin Rouge is "Zidler" not "Zeigler". YES, of course Nicole Kidman sang in it--there's an infamous story that Baz Luhrman told on press junkets for the film where he went to see her and she sang "Nobody Does it Better" from the James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me." Shortly after the film, she recorded a cover of the duet "Something Stupid" with Robbie Williams that played on radio in the UK. The moon singing at the end of the Elephant Love Medley scene was the great opera singer Plácido Domingo. Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop star, played the Green Fairy in the absinthe scene, with her screaming voice at the tail end of the scene being dubbed by Ozzy Osbourne. And Nicole Kidman went for it SO HARD in this movie, she suffered numerous injuries that ultimately meant she had to pull out of the lead in the movie Panic Room (replaced by Jodie Foster), though she appeared in an uncredited voice role in the film as the woman who answers to phone when Foster's character tries to call her ex-husband.
My brother and I sing Elephant Love Medley to each other at karaoke as well as Lady Marmelade. He is Pink and Lil Kim and I'm Mya and Christina. The audience doesn't know how to feel, and it is always the most fun for us. Our other go tos when we sing together our also 100% cringe for a brother/sister duet. We just think it's hilarious. The movie is easily one of the best movie musicals ever created. Very good choice this episode. You're wrong about Roxanne, but I'll let that one slide.
@@Strawb_Goblin I keep thinking its nice to see a woman be able to express sexuality in this day and age, but the way she does it is so problematic. The whole reason I listen to this series is literally in the name, to introduce prospectives of why/how movies can be problematic. But Kelsey really downplays the integrity of the whole show if she can judge a movie being guilty or not, and then can't be self aware and critical of her own words.
@@AJ-ht3kf i saw that moment as more of a joke. Like her wondering how he's not queer because he did things stereotypically associated with gay/bi men. Having said that she does tend to oversexualise film characters.
OMG!!! YES!!! You guys are amazing! I absolutely LOVE this movie, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one obsessed with it! I have the soundtrack on repeat!
KELSEY! You asked if Ewan sings in other stuff, and yessss m'lady, he does. There's a delightfully odd movie called Down with Love where he plays opposite Renee Zellweger, and they sing together in the closing credits. I highly recommend the movie (also has Sarah Paulson, Rachel Dratch, David Hyde Pierce). It's kind of like a meta Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Love the show, love you, keep up the amazingly fun times! ☺💜
Once upon a time my friend and i thought this would make a great drinking game. We picked a couple rules and dove in. It was a lot of fun until the end, we were drunk and suddenly the movie was very sad. Our friend walked by and we were just crying holding hands looking blankly at the screen lol
I like the music of the movie but the editing bothers me so much. I love seeing the dancing and the whole musical number. And the way it’s edited it you can’t appreciate the dancing and overall musical numbers.
Supposedly the character of Luguzano represents (loosely) the great painter Toulouse Lautrec, who was a little person and famously was a regular at the Moulin Rouge in Paris and even lived in the building. He painted many scenes and characters from Paris brothels.
I have a fun story about this movie! basically in college I went on a 2 week study abroad class to Paris and for 3 nights in a row me and my friends sat in our hotel room with french wine and watched this, les miserables, and phantom of the opera to have a "musicals set in paris" marathon. it was so much fun and it happened just before the pandemic so it's become a very cherished memory
Keith, the word you were trying to figure out about music is reprise. :) Also Zach, PLEASE watch Surf Ninjas for your next podcast episode. It is so 90s. And Tone Loc is in it!
I saw it for the first time two years ago and it's a beautiful movie. When Ewan McGregor sang this your song and the end song is beautiful. That's the appeal of Ewan McGregor is he has that normal every day guy look.
The first time I watched it, I was weirded out by the trippy absinthe intro but then fell in love w the music. The soundtrack (still have the CD) is, to this day, lodged in my long-term memory banks. I don't watch it a lot but it's so good! It's whimsical and chaotic. The love story gets you every time. And I happen to love the deeper, rougher version of Roxanne lol
The fact that Zach loves the movie Cats, and has the audacity to call ANYTHING cheap.
I searched for this comment hoping I wasn't the only one lol I anticipate Roxanne EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Its brilliant musically and visually :p
Yessss! Tess and Scott's Roxanne performance! Canadians know. Lol
I’ve seen Virtue and Moir live twice do Moulin Rouge/Roxanne and it is AMAZING!
2) Keith talking about being hilariously straight has me laughing so hard I’m crying 😂😂😂😂😂
Edit: I’m going to fight them all on El Tango Roxanne. That song slaps, it’s DRAMA, Ewan giving us a PERFORMANCE. 👏🏼😤
Excuse meee roxanne is one of the best musical scene in a movie of all timeee you can feel the passion, anger, and jealousy boiling your soulll
There is absolutely NOTHING guilty about Moulin Rouge! One of the best movies ever made, no arguments 👏❤️
John Leguizamo actually plays a real artist named Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He was eccentric, drunk and smoked. Very much poor, however his artwork was influential to the Post-Impressionist/Art Nouveau moment.
Thank you, I’m glad I’m not the only one offended during that bit of the podcast

It's the best melody in the whole movie

Absolutely. I would’ve known Keith in my music geek HS friend group.
Bingo
can confirm this was a choir thing as well
I’ve never clicked an episode of this podcast faster in my life. I LIVE for this movie 😭💜
"the lighthouse with the spinning wheel" KELSEY ITS A WINDMILL

You guys need to do it guys!! Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in there TRUE PERFECT FORMS
No. Because if they shit all over it, I won’t be able to handle it. One of my all time favorite guilty pleasures.
I actually think the Roxanne cover is my favorite and I really like the gruff voice contrast and the little violin solo with the tension of the scene. *Chef's kiss*
I can’t believe yall said Roxanne is the weakest number when it’s most iconic part of the movie.
The comment about Ewan McGregor singing in the Star Wars prequels made something wonderful/horrific pop into my head, and now I must curse you all with it:
Anakin on Mustafar. Burning as a charred lump. Obi-Wan looks down at him from the high ground and bursts into song (in true Moulin Rouge cinematic/musical cover style):

WHAT THE HELL ROXANNE TANGO WAS THE BEST. i'm incensed
THANK YOU, my jaw dropped when they were like "meh"
It's better than the original, but I've never been all that thrilled by the band The Police... or the profession, but that's another topic.
Also, sorry but it’s not based on a true story. The location is real, Satine is based on a famous can-can dancer, but the love story is not a true account. It’s actually inspired by Greek mythology story of Orpheus and Eurydice as well as heavily influenced by the opera LaBoheme

I really need this musical

This better be nothing but 100% pleasure its so fucking good! Still listen to the sound track to this day!
I'm obsessed with Moulin Rouge - the movie, the soundtrack, the show in Paris (SO amazing)... just need to see the Broadway musical!
Had to switch from listening to going to youtube just to see Kelsey's Riddler outfit. So worth it.
I grew up on Moulin Rouge and it's one of the best. I was actually singing elephant medley at the zoo yesterday
Every time I watch an older movie now I wonder if it could be enough to be in guilty pleasures podcast! 💕
Keiths deep range of his voice goes into NPR podcaster mode haha
My favorite guilty pleasures episode yet. I need to go watch moulin rouge right after this because it's one of my absolute favorites. It brought me to the thought about how much I love that movie and Repo The Genetic Opera. Vote that you have a Repo episode PLEASE!!!! Omgggg
Zach you have to watch it again, you have to watch Moulin Rouge at least twice to get it. And then by the 3rd or 4th time you love it!
I'm so happy you did this movie and fully think you should do an episode for all of Luhrmann's movies
I know this show has officially gone off the rails when they said the tango de Roxanne was not a bop and beautiful scene
Moulin Rouge is my favourite movie and watching that on my 13th birthday was such a formative experience for me and set up my taste in everything. Keith mentions it later but Wicked was my second formative experience like this!

I agree! And I also love Scrooge with Albert finney and all the dancing people in the streets! Love it!
The song Roxanne....*chef's kiss*
ZACH. YOU DON'T GET WHY THIS FILM IS AMAZING? HWAT
I saw the title and started screaming "Yesssssss!"
If you want to watch more Ewan McGregor singing, I recommend Down With Love. One of my faves!
He also sings in A Life Less Ordinary!
& the live action Beauty & the beast. He was the candle
Some of my favorite guilty pleasures i fully believe will make hit episodes:
HAIRSPRAY musical (2007)
(James Gunn's) Scooby Doo live action (2002)
🔥💌🔥
Love the show!

Moulin Rouge is a movie you have to watch multiple times to truly understand and appreciate it.
My FAVORITE movie! Though as an art major i cant believe they didnt talk a little about Toulouse-Lautrec and the art scene at the time.
He plays a fictionalized version of Iggy Pop in Velvet Goldmine, it's fantastic. Looooot of nudity, tho, so be warned
One of my all time favorite guilty pleasures!
Speaking of Ewan can we please get an episode on Down With Love!!!
I can't say for sure because idk Zach's dating life, but if you were heart-broken in love, this movie hits different.
Now that he’s adjusted and the show is adjusted, he is literally incredible and options up so easily
literally my fav movie of all time. so excited to listen to this episode!
I actually just saw the play in LA and it was so good and I cried! ALSO The Roxanne part just was captivating.
LETS GO BITCHES . I’ve never seen the movie but I’m hyped for another episode. Love all of you ❤️🌸🪷🪴
I watched this movie on an international flight years ago and loved it. Tried to re-watch it while stoned and I couldn't get through the opening scene lol
Moulin Rouge! was based on the 1936 movie Camille; and John plays Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who was a dwarf. IRL
I had to look back and make sure you didn't do this one yet, but puuuuuuuleeeeeeease do Chicago next!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES PLEASE
I love John Leguizamo! That man is 1 of the greatest actors of all time. This character is a lot lol
I don't think I ever clicked on an episode so quick! I LOVE this movie!
I know Keith was the back up, but when I saw him on the preview I said out loud “ ooo yay they got Keith for this one.”.
miss Garrick, glad Keith is here, loved this movie - saw it in theaters when it came out, my sister and I both were into musicals
staying on the topic of absolute artistic yet whacky complete acid trip love stories, PUH👏🏻LEASE👏🏻 DO ACROSS THE UNIVERSE!!!!
I HAVE NEVER CLICKED ON ANYTHING SO FAST IN MY LIFE
This movie came out when I was 16 really had a grip on my group of band/choir/theater kid friends.
You should see Richard Roxburgh (the Duke) in the TV series Rake. Absolute amazing actor
This episode proves Kelsey's chaotic energy in forcing sexuality onto people in not a good way. As if she's still a high schooler.
Yeah I was so grossed out with her sexualizing 15/16 year old Hilary Duff in the Cinderella story episode
When did that happen in this episode?
@@geo3898 when she mentioned Keith should be gay/bi, and Keith had to defend himself.
@@AJ-ht3kf i saw that moment as more of a joke. Like her wondering how he's not queer because he did things stereotypically associated with gay/bi men. Having said that she does tend to oversexualise film characters.
Was dead playing the soundtrack when this ep came out love it and Keith as always
OMG!!!
Also, I’ll say- this movie made me appreciate Elton John songs as a kid, love that “Your Song” because of this movie.
I like the music of the movie but the editing bothers me so much. I love seeing the dancing and the whole musical number. And the way it’s edited it you can’t appreciate the dancing and overall musical numbers.
You should watch Velvet Goldmine, not only does Ewan MacGregor sing but you get full frontal of hime
YES. Thank you Zach for bringing up the upper lip sweat!! LOL!
I was JUST thinking about this movie you guys are psychic!
Nicole Kidman really sang in the movie, she got offered a contract but turned it down.
And I happen to love the deeper, rougher version of Roxanne lol
im so excited for this pod!!!! i saw moulin rouge on broadway earlier this year in feb and they were incredible performances 🥹💜
ok i’m at 6:08 and i’m wondering if becky saw the show after aaron left 👁👁
