Bear '59 Kodiak review and some Quick Shooting

- This is a video of some shooting I did with my new Bear 59' Kodiak bow.
It is the style of shooting I love to do the most because it closely replicates a real hunting situation, like grouse or woodcock hunting. The shots vary in range from 10 to approx. 28 yards. It is fast shooting having to acquire a target very quickly; usually having just a second or two to hit the target.
I can't imagine who would address you as *not much of an archer* just because you do not do a lot of target archery.
It is a lot harder to hit a moving target at 20 yards than it is to hit a stationary target at 50 yards. Your ability to make very quick and very accurate shot at moving targets is quite phenomenal in my opinion.
They would be the envious people !!!!
I just picked up a Super Kodiak used from a co worker and I just love it. You sir have unreal skills and knowledge. Thank you for sharing.
Jeff, this is one of my favorites from your library of archery videos. Highly skilled shooting, a solid '59 Kodiak review with howling winds emerging in the audio, the photo of the incredible shot on your turkey hunt, slow-motion effects to keep things fun. I understand you're not posting content these days, but I still receive great inspiration from your videos, as well as advice which continues to improve my archery. Thanks so much!
Another humble thank you, added to the list. Your impact on traditional archery can't be measured!
wow if i could shoot to one tenth of your skill i could die a happy man , you sir are a fantastic archer.
Like that you showed your misses too. Enjoy your videos
Thank you God bless n stay healthy
I have an original 59 and it’s an incredible bow
Still shoots flawless after all these years
I just don’t shoot it all of the time, because of its age
Great shooting by the way >>>~~~~~~>
I couldn't hit your tractor if I was sitting on the seat , but I really want this bow. fantastic review.
Thankyou so much for your words of wisdom about archery, and the way you shoot, as an archer... YOU are a true Archer!, and let no one say otherwise sir :) cheers for your clips, keep them coming sir
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and wisdom Jeff, your acquisition speed is quite proficient to say the least fella.. Great review on a Bow I wish to Aquire in the very near future.
Hi Zac.
I did one for the Grizzly last summer. That is one bow I will always truly love.
If I were only able to buy one bow, it would be the Grizzly.
awesome shooting, awesome bow
Ill tell ya Jeff, the talents of you and your kids are an inspiration!
You convinced me to get this bow myself after shooting a samick sage for 12 years. Best decision. Like you said, it just hits what I'm looking at.
I love my 59 Kodiak too Jeff. Shot ali arrows through a chronograph with it and was getting between 190 and199 fps, not bad for 45# at 28"
Jeff, nice head shot on that turkey! Great to have you back.
Wow! she sure is a quick shooter! Thanks now I need this bow! love the Montana but I like the idea of this being kinda in between a LB and a RC!
i life every time i watch this video and the picture of the turkey
Jeff glad your doing better. I pickuped the Montana based on your review. I think the 59 Kodiak will be next, again based on your review.
The 59 Kodiak is a great bow, it was the best thing Bear has ever done, bringing back the 59 Kodiak. I bought 45# and only pulling closer to 41 due to my short draw @ 26" but it's still very fast. I will be buying another soon perhaps @ 55 # this time. You will not regret buying that bow.
Just about ready to pick up a recurve again Jeff. Had a lot of body parts that had to be rebuilt. I'm going to start with a black hunter most likely. Just to see if I can still pull one back. Can't help but always think about you when I have recurves on my mind
First I pray for your health and recovery in Jesus name. Second awesome shooting! Third, I working on owning a 59 identical to it. Your sold me. I have taken turkeys with a compound but yet to get my Trad kill but working on it. I have two Hoyt carbon bows set up identical, they almost never come out of the cased. I have always loved tradbow hunting. The witchery of Archery. Good hunting my friend.
God Bless you Jeff. An excellent video and great to see you are back in good spirit!
pluck...that was the sound of my jaw dropping just now.Amazing skill.
Interesting point you have there. Assyrian bow also have thick and narrow tip too, wonder how they stack up against modern hunting recurves. Still, Kodiak remains one of my dream bow, won't hesitate to nab one at a good price.
I agree with you about not bothering to shoot long distances. You would never in good conscious shoot at game from that far away in fear of missing or worse, wounding the animal. I feel the same way about my personal defense weapon (compact 380 without sights). My handgun is for up close and personal self-defense, not for firing at someone a block away.
Amazing video as always Jeff. The fact that you can hit the fast moving target withing seconds of turning around, at that range, just goes to prove that instinctive archery is indeed true. Also it is great to see that you are back and fully recovered.
Cheers and happy shooting.
Have not seen any content from you lately. I hope you’re doing well. Would love to see you shooting again. Be well.
Gedday there Jeff,Have just recently got my hands on my long awaited 59 kodiak which is 55lb r/h and found that 4 different archers could not get this Kodiak to bear shaft tune, constant high nock travel.Removed feather rest and replaced it with a slightly center raised bear hair rest and you can hardly get a high nock travel if you try.
Regards Carl.
Great to know that you still love archery too, things change sometimes, glad that is not the case with you.
I like the Gold tip carbons for my wing shooting and Easton aluminums for my regular hunting. I like the extra weight in the arrow for this.
Awesome shooting!!! That bow really does seem like it's a part of you. Can't wait to get my own Kodiak! Cheers!
Great video, beautiful bow, and fantastic shooting! Glad you're back!
Jeff, you are an excellent traditional archer!
That is some incredible shooting sir, I pull my hat!
Great picture of a dead Turkey. Don’t get to see that often enough. I’d like to see lots more dead critters. Thanks
Excellent video as always. Glad you're back. Really, that is fantastic shooting.
Looking good Jeff. Glad to see you back!
Beautiful bow! That's what I want to get. You should film some of your hunts Jeff!! love your videos. they've helped me alot.
thanks Dan
Looking good, Jeff! It's great to see you again. Awesome shooting, as always.
I purchased a 1964 Magnum and I absolutely love it
Wow , one video and im chomping at the bit to hit the subscribe button witch is exactly what I will do after my comment, just fantastic shooting , great review , cant wait to check out all of your videos , im thinking of getting into traditional archery and this review has helped me tremendously , thank you...!!
+bowhunter2439 Thanks for the kind words. Since you are just thinking of getting into trad shooting please check out my tutorial videos. Cheers.
Will do , Cannot wait to learn more , thanks again...!!!
Thats a very nice bow.
Ive got 2 Samick's, a 50# Red sStag and a 40# Sage.Nice entry level accurate bows but,
Man i want a Bear 59 Kodiak!
Great shooting.
Bear found something that worked really good, then they changed it. It's good they brought it back.
Welcome back Jeff! Great to see again
Always love your videos Jeff.
Welcome back! Ive missed your uploads! Keep them coming and glad your feeling better!
Incredible !!!!!!!!!
That's wicked 😮
Well... Mr. Bear kept on making it better. He added more to the handle for ballance and a smoother shot like seen in the next 3 years of the Kodiak and the design of the Kodiak Hunter, the heir of the original Kodiak. Also in 1963 Bear added to the riser causing the outward flare before entering the limbs. The Kodiak stopped looking like a Kodiak, so he changed the name to the Super Kodiak. Then Bear put latched on a super Kodiak, and the Kodiak takedown was born. It all about smooth shots.
Glad your back!
You got mad skills man! would love to train with you, move only forward. Big respect.
Love it Jeff, awesome!
Great video as always Jeff!! It's interesting how you only use 1 arrow when you practice your shooting. That's takes patience!! On a side note, have you considering making a tutorial on aerial archery? I would be very interested to learn more, especially from someone like you. Cheers! - Clan TST
Do you actually need to lead the target at all at that distance? Seems like it wouldn't be by much. Are you just shooting down that vertical line, like you demonstrate in your vertical line shooting practice video? I just edited this message to say how absolutely amazed I am at your skill with a bow. I never even thought the things you can do were possible outside of Hollywood. Impressive!
Great video!
I go with a 5" three fletch for my regular arrows and a 5" four fletch in flu-flu for my wing shooting.
WELCOME BACK! Pal
Hi Jeff. Hope all is well. Have you ever thought of making a complete instructional dvd. The free clips are great, but would love to see your shooting style explained from beginning to end with practice tips. I'm just a hunter, not a tournament shooter and your style just seems to be perfect for hunting.
he is awesome
Nice job :)... Good to see a new video.. Sharp as always ;)
Wolfie Instinctive Archer great video. I'm not always sure why your shooting at old oil cans swinging but good shots made how are you feeling hoping all is good
You are a beast Jeff
The Kodiak costs more than the Grizzly, Au Sable, and Montana. The reason? It is better than the others. I own all of them, love them all, but the Kodiak, as you noted, is special.
been watching you for a few days now I noticed no silencers is there a reason good shooting
Absolutely incredible shooting. How many hours per day do you practice ? When did you first start serious training ? Out here in Montana archers generally hunt w/ 70 lbs. compound bows 80% let-off, mechanical release, illuminate sights, etc. Recently, I've considered instinctive shooting with compound bow, but your videos are truly inspirational. Great that you made such a good recovery. Impressive too that Bear Archery is making such fine, traditional bows.
Mr. Kavanag,
Out of curiosity, could you possibly do a video on your hunting equipment setup maybe this coming fall? I want to take my traditional equipment hunting, but don't have much of an idea where to start.
Hi Jeff i love your shooting. I am Johan from South Africa i love this game and i try to make bows myself. I am glad you are back . I started to watch your videos and the first time in my life i have found somebody that really knows how to shoot and teach. I have started to practice the principles you teach and it really works. How do you aim is it gap shooting, point of aim,or instinctive?
I am really looking at buying one of these '59 reproduction Kodiaks. Its that bow or a Martin Savannah stealth. I have an older 56" grizzley that i can never seem to get consistent groups with. I can see some slight twisting in the limbs.
I would love to buy a new maple Kodak. Just not available. 🙁
Bought a new 59 Kodiak. Took about 3 months to get. You are right. While I love my Grizzly, the 59 Kodiak is a much more refined vow. Absolutely a fast hard hitter. My new favorite bow.
Another great video Jeff. How do you like the grip in comparison to the grizzly? On the grizzly do you use anything other than the stock string (Rooty on leather wall ). Cameron
No it's a Deutz. And I'm a hardcore IH guy and I like Oliver, but if u don't hold that against me, I wont against u. Well, maybe a bit if u claim Deere invented something first or better, but I'll be pretty unbiased and I give straight facts. I'll also promote New Holland and Gale forage equipment. I'm pretty much a good well of knowledge of farm equipment (I have a background in dairy farming, if that makes any scene to you on my farming experience) and Bear archery.
Hi Jeff, first of all thank you for all your videos. I watched most of them and learned about Instinctive Archery. I am planning to start shooting too and would like to ask your opinion on which bow to start shooting. I am in between Kodiak and Take down, but my heart goes to Kodiak honestly. Do you think it would be a good choice to start shooting? I am ~70kg, 1.78m high, slender and not very powerful on the arms. Thank you again for all sharings.Cheers, Emre
How much you want for that tractor old man
Awesome shooting! I am retiring my 2 Grizzlies manufactured from 1966 and 1969, my 66 has developed a weak upper limb, so rather than continue shooting, and breaking it, I will retire it as a wall hanger. I want something different and am divided between the 59 Kodiak and Super Kodiak, I draw 30" so I thought perhaps a 64 AMO SK: but on the other hand I sure like the looks of the 59 Kodiak with the 60 AMO. My Grizzlies have 58 and 56 AMO respectively and my longer draw was ok with the 58 AMO but the 56 AMO is a little pinchy on the fingers, so Im looking for some advice as to which to buy?
Snow Walker They are very different bows but both shoot very well. I think either would perform well. The '59 is a much lighter, quicker handling bow than the Super Kodiak is, but that isn't saying it doesn't handle well too. lol I think it will come down to your personal preference. I am glad I have both so I don't have to choose.
Thanks.. I was trying to convince myself to buy a brand new one of those. Done!
Hello Jeff,
I placed an order with my local Bow and arrow shop to order this beautiful bear 59 Kodiak for Christmas.
I also decided to get 40LBS.
How do you recommend the right tension to your followers, is it height, strength or expertise.
I am 5"7" 120 lbs and currently shooting a 50LBS Bear Montana Longbow which is a little too strong and I have been shooting for 3 months.
Do you know how long is the wait to get it from the factory? I was told 4 to 5 weeks
Thank you for your help.
BTW I started to shoot from different distances according to your advice and I started to be more accurate even at 20 yards.
Fabrice
looking at bear super grizzly or kodiak magnum or cheyenne what of thoose would be the best bow for a beginner?
Give yourself more credit.... the bow helps .. but its the guy using it that does the real work..
Hi Jeff. I'm planning to get this bow, what is the minimum draw weight would you recommend for deer hunting?
Great shot on that turkey. Through the eye?
You definitely got skills. I own a #45 Montana and a #55 Cheyenne. Love both of them. How often do you shoot? and do you ever shoot wood arrows?
The Cheyenne only make up to 50#....
What you think the better choice this or the takedown
Just out of curiosity is that a John Deere in the video, and if so what model and year is it? Props if your tractor is indeed a John Deere, John Deere tractors are the best in the world.
Hello Jeff, very good of your videos, I intend to buy a Bear Kodiak Recurve, it is a good bow? and Bear Patriot Longbow, do not have this information for living in Brazil and not have reseller Bear here in Brazil. To watch the videos I have to ask my brother who translates it does not speak English.
thank you
great vid!! is there a blizzard goin on outside??
what kind of fetching do you use on your arrows please? thx
pretty good. how are you on deer?
When are you going to make a tuning video?
Do prefer aluminum or carbon arrows?
Hi Johan. It is instinctive.
Wow
Nice video, beautiful bow. You need another target at the other end of your barn, shoot more, walk less.
If you shoot an arrow from a bow, you're an archer.
Not much of an archer because you dont shoot 65 yards?
Yea, i put my money on you vs anyone making those comments
I don't like people that don't take the time to answer the very people that make money for them. Its the epitome of an elitist narcissist.
I'm not sure if you're referring to me here? If you notice, my videos are all almost 10 years old. I think I made my last one about six years ago, likely longer. I don't make them anymore. Also, I've never made any money off them. I made the videos for the sole reason of trying to help people get into archery to assist them in shortening their learning curve because I know how much I struggled back in the seventies and eighties on my own without any help. In the past, I've responded to hundreds and hundreds of emails and questions with absolutely nothing in it for me. I've stopped answering questions for several reasons. Firstly, it takes a lot of my time. I've already donated my time and energy to making the FREE videos in the first place. And trust me, it takes a lot of time. Secondly, I find that most of the questions people ask can be answered if they just pay attention when watching the videos. Thirdly, because of people like you who expect everything given to them with a total disregard for even saying "Thank You."
@@JeffKavanagh if you took the time to read your comments section, you would know that I am one of your most frequent and friendly commenters, through the years. This is the basis of my reaction to your lack of involvement with your viewers. The evidence speaks for itself. My reading of thousands of comments to your videoes, has made me realize that you respond most to adoration, not sense and respect. You fell for your own need for attention, under the guise of helping people.
This was the first com ment I've responded to in years probably about six years or so.For some reason I got a notification on it and I opened the message. No I don't read the comments anymore. Like I've said, I've done my bit for King and Country. I get nothing from the videos and never have. I don't make any money off them at all and I don't have time to spend reading everything or respond. Sorry, but I'm not sorry. I have a life outside of archery. I don't owe anyone continued support with regard to my videos. If you watch them fine. If you learn something or are entertained fine.

@@JeffKavanaghwell said Jeff..best wishes from Australia..I regularly use my super grizzly 40#. My super Kodiak 45# and Cheyenne 50#. Beautiful bows..been trying to get a 55# 59 Kodiak but they're not easy to find... will persevere though.Interesting point about the limb width... hoping you and your's are all well...❤. Your skill is spectacular. Learning a lot from your posts.. thanks 👍
