These days always people focus on batting and spinning the ball like crazy they never see what lies in the beauty of speed bowling the deadly bouncers and the wickets splitting. Sad to see what has cricket become.😥
Because it doesn't work. Properly fast bowlers only work strategically *as a team* if you have a selection of dependable, economical, and durable bowlers to fill up the majority of the overs that your express bowler isn't bowling. In Tests you need them to be bowling dozens of overs at that speed, which is usually impossible. In short form you need them not only to be fast but superhuman with their accuracy, because a batter need only get an edge to score a 4 or 6 off them.
There are rare cases where they work and they are magical to watch, but speed alone will not consistently win matchs for *the team* above club level.
That's not to say speed isn't necessary. 140kph is still bloody fast and is roughly a requirement for an international pace bowler. But faster than that comes with a lot of downsides that takes either a special player or a special team to accommodate an express bowler who can leak runs, not pull their weight in terms of overs bowled, and get injured regularly. As an example, (young) Brett Lee probably doesn't help you win matches unless you have McGrath, Warne, et al also in the team bowling more economically and for much longer than him. Without the others you get Akhtar - incredible on his own, but not so incredible he single handedly won games for Pakistan.
Anecdotally, even in this video you can see that Knight was getting bat on ball fine even at that speed. Add in that boundaries are smaller (and always were small on some grounds), there are fielding restrictions, your opposing players are fitter now and don't injure as easily, and bats are so good they can hit sixes by accident, and you have to be so incredibly good at what you do that only a dozen or so have existed throughout all of history, and even then they were often not consistent match winnersm

It's still a record. You can't win every match. You need to be good in both batting and bowling also. I don't think pakistan's strength was batting.
Batsman easily played those balls, so speed doesn't matter much. 140 km/hr bouncer or yorker is more difficult to play than 161.3 overpitched ball.

Nick knight played it super comfortably!! Like it didn't just bother him at all!! And I think pak were trashed by close to 110 runs in this match!! And in a match where englands run rate was under 5, akhtar got smashed some 63 runs in 9 overs with one wicket (7 per over). Reminds me of the bit of commentary shastri did at Centurion in the same world cup when Sachin smashed Pakistan....he said, you could be the fastest bowler in the world, but if you don't get it right you will get a tap!!
Also there is never a way to find the fastest ball delivered in the history...speed guns came in much later, not that it is shoaibs fault...but jeff Thompsons deliveries visually looked faster than this, but they were not measured with any modern gizmos!!

there is a ball by thomson to luckhurst that i believe ive timed quicker than this.
i know it's highly inaccurate but try it yourself and help me delve deeper into pre gun speeds.
1) put playback speed to 0.25
2) start stopwatch when pivot foot is planted
3) stop stopwatch when you 'perceive' the ball reaches batsman
rinse & repeat the same deliveries until you have a 'feel' for the average time you keep getting.
like i say it is highly inaccurate i'm sure (but still a lot of subjective fun), but the more you play about with it, the more accurate you get.
i get around 1.9 secs for this verified 100mph delivery, and around 1.8 secs for thomson to luckhurst.
some rudimentary calculations later, going off this verified 100mph delivery, i reach an estimate of 106mph for the thomson to luckhurst delivery. and i believe it too.
...and baring in mind thomsons boast of 175kph, i think he's almost certainly there or thereabouts. i can't believe that serendipity captured his fastest delivery on camera (same also for ahktar i reckon), so somewhere at some point in time, both those bowlers bowled a ball faster than the two in question. +100mph deliveries - amazing 😳😬

There is no way that was accurate. I see they've now changed the method of recording the speed, hence why this ball is now listed as 97mph. But still, none if those balls looked like 155kph balls.
