- Southport's abandoned parks! What happened and where did they go? I explore the old Kew Park and also take a look at Sands Park in Ainsdale! I check out where the old Southport lido used to be. I take a walk around one of England's most interesting and historic seaside towns.
Southport is a seaside town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 94,421, making it the eleventh most populous settlement in North West England.
Southport lies on the Irish Sea coast and is fringed to the north by the Ribble estuary. The town is 17 miles (27 km) north of Liverpool and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Preston.
Southport is one of the nicest places in UK. It is quiet, peaceful and beautiful, from the seaside, marine lake, theme park, famous shopping aracades, sand dunes, forests, Victorian streets and much more, there is plenty to see and do. Festivals and events are running all year round such as the Jazz Festival, the Flower Show, the Air Show, the Golf Grand Open.

Nice and enjoyable Señor Emerson, more is good!
More Southport videos coming soon!
Fascinates me that there was Kew gardens, with buildings, including a zoo/aquarium. Things built like that so long ago, far from the town centre. There were less people, and the town was smaller. Somehow buildings destroyed by fire, similar to the Winter Gardens, on the prom.
Yes a very interesting history 😃
@@andrewemmerson What we think we know of it.
Those ‘car parks’ used to be a Park and Ride scheme. There was another on the Esplanade by the Eco Centre on the front.
Ah thank you I didn’t know that, I wonder why it died out?
@@andrewemmerson No worries. I learnt quite a few bits from your video i didn’t know, so thank you! The Kew one, if i remember correctly was hardly used. I suppose the cost of maintaining/securing the site added to the buses running cost probably rendered it unviable.
@@andrewemmerson Believe the one behind Victoria park still operating,, then again lots of shops have closed now so it that one now not viable too?
I remember there being a' zoo' somewhere near King's gardens. Only went there once and the only animal there was a small dog. It was a Shitzu ...
😂 not much of zoo then! They have more in pets at home!
2:18 No canal in Southport. It's the Three Pools Waterway, but is really a watercourse. Or it's one of the brooks, Boundary, I think. Also 2 others, the Sluice and Crossens River.
Thanks for sharing
I left Southport as a lad of 21 50 years ago. It's really nice to view your videos. Keep it up pls
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video, I’m sure there will be more in Southport soon.
Kew Woods was a land fill site until the late 80's.
It was re developed in the early 2000's.
Ahh I see, interesting!
Love your videos on Southport
I have lived here many years and you have taught me things I didn’t know
Thank you
I’m glad you enjoyed the video, you’re most welcome!
Yes the town lane park used to be the tip those trees and paths were fairly new and used to walk round there around 10 years ago with the dog ,the plants etc were much much smaller then ,enjoying the videos .
Ah right, thanks for the info! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
@@andrewemmerson Yes weather it was park before the tip I don't know ,the tip was there in 70s 80s .Also at Banks there used to be a huge hospital with a listed huge manor type building ,it burnt down maybe 90s ,its now a massive housing area ,there was a landmark water tower recently flattened for building ,the old railway to Preston is like a path now there are some bits of the old station in the ground ,might be worth a wander may make a good video , the village itself was an old fishing and produce place ,there's many impressive banks around it that stop it flooding .
@@ZerHour that’s really interesting, I know the banks area but I didn’t know there was a huge hospital building or railway there, yes definitely worth a look
@@andrewemmerson Yes search "Greaves hall mansion " /hospital , there was a siren used to go off if there was any escaped patients or a fire ,it sounded like a WW siren used to hear it mikes away . The mansion was like a Tudor black white building was very impressive sadly fire finished it ,then it was flattened , ! There is also a ghost on Ralph's wife lane another famous locally story .
@@andrewemmerson You definitely need someone to assist your research (I know have said it before, sorry Andrew) as you appear to be learning and guessing much, plus folks memories sometimes play tricks! Cannot understand why you don't say the 'pond' as you call it is in the SDGH grounds, that pond is part of Kew Woods and the field you were on is not! That looked incredibly like Meols Park. Tip wasn't at B&Q but at roughly the second roundabout as you pass the old Isle of Wight farm, turn right there. I presume you are talking of Johnsons old car tip - maybe not? The main coastal road was also used as a tip for all rubbish, that is what it was built on, our rubbish!
28:26 Hesketh Park aviary until, I think, the end of the nineties. I remeber various pheasants and chickens.
Ah interesting thank you 🙏
Thanks - very interesting as usual - keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thank you so much 🙏
Quite a lot of incorrect information here.
The road you're driving down within the first few minutes was originally "Long Lane", the ORIGINAL route to South Hawes/Southport from Scarisbrick Bridge. The Kew gardens station was on a totally different line, long gone.
No part of Meols Cop Park (it is Blowick, not Kew) formed any part of Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens was accessed from The Alexandra Hotel, now the site of The Richmond Pub.
The site closed in the early 1930s.
Canal??? That is Fine Janes Brook!!!
🤨
Thank you some interesting points there, I will need to look into those and check it. The railway station to Kew Gardens, was in the centre of what’s now B&Q, I never knew where the entrance to the gardens was, as was difficult to find out. 👍
@@andrewemmerson unsure why my first reply has been removed... but anyway...
I am fully aware that Kew Gardens station stood where B&Q is however, the vast majority of the road you drove down follows the course of a lane that is many centuries old, it is how the North Meols parish centre (Churchtown) was accessed from the east, and prior to what is now the course of Norwood Ave/Meols Cop Rd being constructed c1818, it formed part of the route taken to South Hawes/South Port from Scarisbrick Bridge. It did not form part of the railway line. A small section of the line (long gone) ran adjacent to the road now serving B&Q.
Feel free to check any of my social media content regarding Southport history, it is all bona fide and fully researched/referenced. 👍
@@SecretSandLand your 1st comment is above, cool, got the jist of where the line ran! 👍
Love ur vids u should make more on the history and architecture of Southport not lived here long but love living here it’s a shame all the history is lost :/
Thank you again, glad you liked the video, hopefully not all the history of Southport has been lost and we can save the rest, I remain hopeful 🙏
Land you ended up at, the hospital area, is reclaimed old tip
Princess Park, (the old Lido) unfortunately has a very gruesome and tragic, recent past
Aha ok interesting! I never heard about a gruesome past 😪
@@andrewemmerson read under Lynsey Quy, she was found there
@@thenazarite2444 ok will do 👍
That is NOT the Lido. It is the open air swimming pool. Miles away.
Was it 2 different places?
@@andrewemmerson - maybe andrew is thinking of the ainsdale Lido?
It isn't now. 😅 Not for over three decades!
