DPR Ian is an Australian of Korean heritage whose real name is Christian Yu. Before he became a singer he was a video editor for Kpop music videos, and he still directs and edits his own music videos. His music tells the story of his own mental illness, which is really cool. His videos have two main characters, MIITO (which is an acronym but I forget for what) which represents his depressive periods, and Mr. Insanity who represents his manic periods. If you watch his videos you can clearly tell when he is MIITO and when he is Mr. Insanity. In some videos he is only MIITO, and in others only Mr. Insanity, but I especially like this videos like this one where you get to see both of them. Mr. Insanity also has a side kick called “The Green” who you also get to see in this video.
I don't know if you know this but Mito and Mr. Insanity aren't concepts but actually his alters because he has Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D.). However as he also has bipolar 1, in his case, Mito as the Protector and trauma holder would switch during his lows and or when there's a particular trigger, whereas Mr. Insanity would switch with his highs. In the early years, Ian wasn't open about his D.I.D so it was understandable that people connected the characters of Mito and Mr. Insanity to his bipolar, however additional information that he revealed would give us a better understanding. Since you've also mentioned MIITO, it's actually MITO and MIITO which are his album/EP names. While Mito is his alter, the name is also an acronym for Moodswings In This Order, whereas MIITO stands for Moodswings In To Order. In the music videos where you see scenes in black and white, Ian has edited that way whenever Mito has switched with him (and even if Mito hasn't switched, he will still mention it). For Insanity, he is not yet Mr. Insanity as the Dear Insanity arc is about Ian on his journey to becoming Mr. Insanity so he begins to act more Insanity-like. There's a whole lot more to explain with this but I will keep it like this for now.
Also one more thing to add, before being a Director and video editor, he was the leader of a kpop group named C-Clown and prior to that he used to upload bboy videos. Plus during his high school years he was in a metal band.
As someone who also struggles with mental health issues his music always speaks to me. Some personal favorites are Scaredy Cat, Nerves, and Skins. Would love to see you react to more of him! Some background on the song Skins. Ian himself didn’t write it, his alter personality Mito did. Mito is his protector personality that’s holds all the trauma and deals with the negative emotions and moments in life when Ian can’t. The song skins is only a demo right now since Mito wrote it during Ian’s blackout. He also made a mv so Ian decided to just release it. It’s about how Mito feels living in Ian’s skin and holding all the trauma. It’s like a letter from Mito to Ian. It’s super deep and vulnerable. Ian has always been super open and vulnerable about his mental health. He has shown so many fans that you can be successful despite your mental health issues that take up your whole life. He has done a few interviews where he talks about this. His Zach sang show one is super good. At the time he hadn’t told the public about his DID and just his bipolar disorder. He's very strong for deciding to show what happens inside his mind in his work, I really love him for that 'cause I see myselfe in many of his strugles!! I just watched an interview with him last week. I always liked his songs when I heard them. But somehow I always avoided them because it appealed to me way too much. So in order is how I would recommend anyone getting into his works. As an ARMY and a Dreamer I have definitely used that phrase "down the rabbit hole" for both BTS and DPR Ian. lol
I also have c-ptsd and bipolar 1 and Ian's music is very relatable to me. Luckily I saw him live in Frankfurt last year.
