Wow! I am a fan of Maki-e and I love my Lamy Al-stars, well I'm a fan of most all of Lamy's fountain pens, and what you have done is amazing. Stunning and beautiful. Seriously great work.
Magnificent. I bought an ebonite pen from Ranga Pens, and was wanting to lacquer it, but like you, Urushi is not readily available. I was thinking of just using lacquer model paint. Love your work!
Thank you very much Gregory. I did eventually buy Urushi from Japan (see videos) but it was not as easy as i thought. I would still like to make more pens if i had the time.
Year2047 Ha ha commissions, that would be good ? Im still experimenting with the techniques, but who knows maybe in the future. Im working on two different ones at the moment. Once they are done they will be available for sale, however im not quite sure how much yet. One technique maybe more time consuming than another so one maybe more expensive than the other.
I think this has turned out really well, obviously it was a labour of love, and could never be sold at a gain, but it has inspired me, and I am sure others, to have a go, did you spray the lacquer or brush paint it. A very nice job!
+Englishman French This was just a number of Lamy pens i customized which were all sold. The 2 pack lacquer was sprayed on. A mask needs to be worn when spraying. Good luck.
Charlie Lame Deer Thanks. Personally i never post caps on my pens as i have seen to many pens ruined. But good point, im sure it would be just as good as any other lacquered pen as the lacquer is very hard once fully cured.
I love the antique gold effect you've created on this pen, but I think it's lost on a Lamy al-star. I would have chosen a more traditional, cigar shaped modern pen like a Pilot 78g. Somehow the modern design of the pen and the antique 'maki-e' clash. Also, leaving the ends of the pen black looks a little unfinished, but would be easy to fix if you wanted. Was the gold leaf coming off on your fingers, or was that just left over from the work you did? I painted a cheap Manuscript italic pen with metallic acrylic paint. It looks a bit gaudy but interesting. I used various colours and mottled them. Only took about 45mins. I also painted the section. I vastly prefer your method, but it's too labour intensive for me. I look forward to seeing what you do next time.
muskndusk Yes i have been trying to source a cigar shaped Ebonite blank pen without success. The Lamy is a good pen to practice on due to the design. This has been a leaning curve for the next one so any flaws on this one have been noted.
Who said you're not a master? This is really impressive!
sbrebrown Yo Stephen..Not bad for the first attempt. The next one should be better, hopefully.
Grand master.....
2 masters here!
This is brilliant. Left me speechless ... What finish!!! Incredible!!!
CyberShoggy Hello again...Yes the finish is beautiful and took quite a while and lots of polishing to achieve. It looks even nicer in real life.
The nicest Lamy I have ever seen, well done.
Glad you like it, it was one of a number of custom pens i did. Thanks.
I love that pen! Beautiful work!
+Lisa Adair Yes it came out very unusual. Thank you.

Kenny Cross Im glad you like it, thanks.
Wow very glad I found your channel. I am thinking about doing this to my pilot metropolitan
Hi Brisa, This effect took a lot of difference processes along with numerous applications of 2k lacquer and time. Good luck if you attempt it.
This was a first attempt? Jeez that is amazing work mate.
NeutralGrounder Thanks, take a look at the others i did. Im now working on another pen (not a Lamy) so i will review it when it is finally done.
Really Wonderful. All your work really paid off. Looks as good as any Maki-e as I've seen.
Greg Moore Thanks. There not quite up to Maki-e standard yet, but they are definitely different.
That is absolutely stunning! I want to do this to my Jinhao 159!
someonesusingmyname Thanks. Its not as easy as it may look as there are things that can go wrong. So if you try then good luck.
Fascinating, it's very nice looking!
Joven Chiew Yes its definitely different.

Steph !!! This was the best thing ever !! And what a great reveal out of the case !! Brillant and a whole lot of fun !!
A Red Falcon Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching.
That is insane! Amazing work.
Year2047 Thanks, it was a bit of a learning project. The next one is being primed.
You taking commissions?

Look forward to seeing them.
Beautiful 👌
Yes this was my favorite finish. Thanks
It's so beautiful! I would never have thought to do this! What a great project!
Jesse Ray Thanks for your comments. The next one is about to start.
It look amazing; a great idea superbly executed.
You have outdone yourself (and many others)! Amazing result, a real stunner.
Love it! What a beauty! Looks like doing this would've been great fun. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Gerald Taylor Glad you like it. It is actually quite time consuming, so im not sure about being fun. Thanks for watching.

It's beautiful. What about scarring and scratching on the end if the cap was posted? I like it though. Very nice work indeed.
Charlie Lame Deer Thanks. Personally i never post caps on my pens as i have seen to many pens ruined. But good point, im sure it would be just as good as any other lacquered pen as the lacquer is very hard once fully cured.
WOW!! Looks stunning!! Could you post a more detailed how-to video on hbow you got to this effect??
Love your accent, by the way!
+Thiago jardim pereira Sorry i am not creating any more custom Lamy pens. Thanks for watching.
My God!
Nick Wong Is that good or bad ?
Of course it's magnificent ! Come on, DIY=Awesome, because nobody can make a replica.
Nick Wong Thanks Nick. Yes i suppose it is a one of. Thanks for watching.
What case is that
skycaptain141 It is one i bought on Ebay.

What type of paint and lacquer did you use?
Mainly paints and 2 pack lacquer used in the auto industry and some gold powder. Thank you for your interest.
