ABOUT GÉRALDINE
Hi! I’m Géraldine Lepère, the founder of Comme une Française (= “Like a French woman”) and your new French best friend. :)
Each Tuesday, I share a fun, fresh and bite-sized lesson on French language and French culture-from embarrassing mistakes to avoid to pop-cultural references to “get” !
For over five years now, with millions of views and students in over 56 countries, I’ve been helping people just like you gain the confidence to really talk in French. And better than the “textbook” French from high school!
*succesfully starts a conversation
*doesn't know what they're saying afterwards
Me in Italy 😩
MDR ! (LOL)
Exactly my tought 😄 why ask them something if I won't understand their answers
Having the confidence to ask a question or make a simple statement about something has helped me a tonne with learning French and communicating well with French people. Last year when I went to Angers by myself I was having conversations from the moment I landed at Nantes airport. One example that comes to mind was at the train station two French women and I missed a train because it was cancelled and the replacement train left from another platform before we could get to it so we sat and chatted for well over an hour (including on the next train). Also, another tip for boosting confidence is to have a few drinks ;) I found it easy enough to chat with people at bars especially since, being a student city, there were a ridiculous amount of people in Angers around the same age as me :)
While bicycling in Alsace I came across an older couple. The husband was taking a photo of his wife with the beautiful vineyards and villages in view behind her. I stopped and asked if they might like if I took a photo of the two of them with their camera. That was the beginning of a delightful conversation of at least 25 minutes, in French. I've found that older people are much more willing to stop and chat than their younger counterparts, and are willing to put up with (and gently correct!) my less than perfect French.
I have loved your videos for a long time! I was just wondering if you were interested in making videos mainly in French instead of English? Same kind of content but you explain in French, but then with the examples and special terms you do both languages as you already are doing. It would really help us immerse better in listening in French. 😊
Avulet I agree!
thanks professeur
Bravo !
Just started taking French this year an day professeur plays your videos everyday at the beginning of class. I enjoyed them enough to come check it out on my own and I love them!

Thank you so much for your clear and extremely useful lessons! I can't wait to get back to France to use your suggestions. I will try to practice some in my Cercle Francais here in Bellingham.

s'asseoir?
Small talk over the internet, nouveau amis
damn i found it fascinating to watch ! thank you so much !
Love it and love the way you teach french? Are you a french teacher?
J'adore votre vidéos! J'apprends francais à l'université. Votre vidéos sont
très utile. Merci Beaucoup Geraldine!
I'm trying to practice my written French, excuse-moi if it's not perfect yet :)
Vos would be the plural of your, so in this instance you would say "j'adore vos vidéos/j'adore tes vidéos". Also the word "utile" must agree with the noun in his case being 'les vidéos', this means that you have to agree to the fact its plural making the adjective "utiles".
Also you would say "j'apprends le francais"
Hope i was somewhat useful :)
thank you so much, it's really helpful
but it's naaaah essay to make French friends, now got 2 years in Lyon but still alone. 🤔
Still love your videos, I have notifications every time you upload a new one. Thank you so much!
J'adore ton examples! Ils me font comprendre meilleur comme la langue française fonctionne. Merci pour le bonne travail
what is the term for "milk-chocolate" as opposed to "dark" chocolate? (In French of course!) Merci !!
Understanding the reply, especially when they have an accent is very difficult for me.
these will work so well with my neighbour but I feel like French people don't tend to participate in small-talk to the same extent that North Americans do (one of the may reasons why we perhaps seem overly chatty and loud in comparison :P)
what means "contrat synallagmatique" pls ?
Bonjour Géraldine, je vais loger un étudiant d'échange de France cet octobre. Est-ce que vous avez de conseil pour moi? Peut-être vous pouvez faire une vidéo sur ça? Merci beaucoup!
I was told about the French don’t really like small talk in the way that England Canadians or Americans do and the lack of Smalltalk it is one of the reasons why their incorrectly perceived as being a rude. Is this true? Is french small talk different from what we may have in America?
Bonjour Géraldine,
J’ai une question difficile pour vous. J’ai arrivé en France il y a 2 mois.
When I arrived, I had the attitude of ‘talk to everybody.’ Then a whole lot of very bad harassment happened with lots of men on the street while walking the dog, going grocery shopping, etc (my clothing has become progressively more baggy and less fancy but it hasn’t changed a thing). Making small talk in broken French has led to physical boundaries being crossed as well as stalking behaviour. The men who have done this seem to have no ‘type’- different ages, different socioeconomic statuses, different everything. Same problem.
Do you have any tips on street safety? I feel like I’m missing something culturally. Before this I was living in New York, where I didn’t have this problem.
Cordialement,
Frankie
"un paysage" could theoretically be translated as panarama(sp?) in English, but more often "landscape" would be a better translation, especially when talking about the actual view of the land rather than a picture, painting or film of the land. "Je pense que ce paysage est beau." better translation in English is "I think that the landscape is beautiful " not "I think that the panarama is beautiful." When in doubt, just say "the land." For example, If you didn't know the English words for "corn field" or "Mountain" etc. but you think they are beautiful in English you could just say "I think the land here is beautiful."
Bien l'ecole Français professor beau travail mon tout jour avec ici bien (so please help me i want speak France language
I live in France
I just want to ask something that’s bothered me. Do we say vous/votre to all strangers? Even young people? Otherwise this was a really informative and practical video. Will definitely try this out.
Rule of thumb: If you don't know them and they're adults: use "vous".
Unless you're both students.
Thank you for taking your time and replying! Keep up the good work
Salut Comme une Francaise. Vous pouvez m'expliquer que veut dire "donne m'en" et "Reprends- en" en Anglais ?
Hi ! "Donne m'en" in french means "give it to me" for exemple during a meal you need bread (for french aha), so you can ask to your friend "donnes m'en" or "donnes en moi".
"reprends en" in some ways means "take it again". Always during your meal you can ask to your friend if he wants more bread so you can say "reprends en" but I must to inform you that these expressions sound more like an order in french.
I hope you've understand something !
@@tatiana5395 oh, this pronoun 'en'.
Are there any French cartoons that you would recommend?
They are quite old, but the "il etait une fois...." (once upon a time) are very nice.
Otherwhise, french cartoons are usually not very good
@@osez111 try TinTin
@@TRPGpilot Je n'aime pas Tintin.
Je suis un partisan de l'ecole de Marcinelle plus que de la ligne claire
I wouldn't say... "tu" (tutoyer) an unknown in the street, except if you're young and the other about the same age...
i want to speake franche language>>>>plz
Something sounds a little off with your microphone or sound. I hear a little whistling sound right after you speak.
I would love to have a straight conversation with a waitress while ordering food, from beginning to end. Yet probably wouldn't understand a word she said if she spoke back to me🤓
You are good but try to not speak English too fast or try to use less words in English , bringing the theme more directly . Merci de nous aider!
Black Cat “Try not to speak English too fast” ?? I didn’t think she was...she is speaking at the normal speed ...she doesn’t need to change anything, it is completely understandable and very helpful. Her English is perfect btw except for tiniest mistakes here and there, e.g “what A rain! “ instead of What rain!
arriesone1 She speaks English too fast for her. If she spoke it more slowly, she could take more care to pronounce it correctly. I find her English distracting and would prefer videos entirely in French. I don’t understand why someone who is teaching French would speak more in English than in French.
You are too fast, remember you are teaching for learners to appreciate your lessons proper. Well-done!
Is it just me... I think you look like Anne Hathaway
Why do the French love bresil so much ?
It's too fastly spoken....at times it's over the head sometimes
I feel like you speak too much English in your videos :((
Don't waste so much time giving long speeches in English.
