Wow - So many people noticed that I am holding it “upside down” in this video. That is correct, however, the sound is nearly the same. What matters most, is the music that you hear.
Very helpful, Kalani! I've had a guiro since 1976, and all these years I've been only stroking on the downstroke. Boy, is my face red! Thank you very much!
I love the guirro, and yes, I was playing it like a gringo, because...well, you know. I couldn't figure out the move I saw the Cuban players doing. Thank you so much!
At my school they use a small bamboo stick (because they lost the original stick). It works pretty good and because it's not perfectly round it has some flatter and sharper sides on it, which make a different softer or sharper sound depending on how you hold the stick.
Very good class, all due respect your holding it up side down. You get a better sound also if it's a natural Guido you will have seeds and innards all over the stage
Yes, they are usually played with the hole on the top, but the difference in sound is small. Either way will work, but it’s typical to have the hole up.
Would help if it was held correctly with the opening to the top. And when you play the second short stroke you roll down to the bottom and continue in a circular motion at the bottom to make a half circle 180 degree turn to come back up. With all respect this lesson is pretty bad.
I hate to be a hater, but my god so much talking. Just play something in context and count it out. /1 2 an 3 ee an duh 4 /.. 5 mins into the video and you're STILL TALKING..You don't need to explain that much, we're not dumb, we'll get it. I'm sure you're a nice guy and very talented, but I can't watch your videos.
It's not a matter of being dumb, it can be hard to pick up a skill just by watching somebody else doing it. Breaking it down into its component parts, and explaining those parts, can be very useful. If you don't like it, well then don't watch. Simple.

You’re welcome!
I probably made my comment in a disrespectful manner. I meant no disrespect. I respect your talents and the fact that you share your knowledge.
You rock Kalani I'm seriously one of your numerous fans!!!!

Mr Clean picked up a new hobby
The Guiro is normally played with open end towards the top, yes it does make a difference because of the shape of the Guiro.
You’re right. I don’t know why I was holding that way in this video. It does make a small difference in sound.

Sounds good. Use what works.
And possibly because it is hollow?
I discovered the same thing - in my case it's a bamboo chopstick (solid) - I use the thick end and it's like you describe.
Everyone loves your Chanel we all love it!!!

Lol, the gringo way xD. Cool videos man!
I don't have guiro :( but still thank you for everything Kalani!!! :)
Why you holding the Guiro upside down????
I wonder if there is a pitch for guiro since the faster you move the higher "pitch" you get
I love it
GRACIAS EXPLICAS MUY BIEN
That is helpful!
Thanks!
i Don't own a guiro, but could I use a flat comb to achieve the same sound?
The gringo way indeed - lol ;)
I was hoping you were gonna demonstrate the other surfaces, unless I missed it
Saludos a kalani
Key Is C#5 & D5
Cooooooooooooooooooool
How did I end up here?
Got lucky.
trust that
Don’t denigrate the güiro! It takes skill to play it well and help lead a band
Needs more cowbell.
i like to use the back of a small mallet
Is this what's in the temptations song I want a love I can see?
Alessandro Marcelo Aduviri Acha tycoon
I'm sorry but you are holding that Guiro upside down. You are holding it incorrectly. Holding it properly also produces the proper scrapping sound.
Read my pinned comment.
holding it upside down and holding the stick wrong lol
Well the last time I saw one of those it looked like a fish. That one looks more like larva
Price?
The güiro actually is not played with a stick. It's actually played with some kind of brush-like object I don't remember the name of.
Marcos Bermudez you may be thinking of the guira (not the guiro), which is played with an afro pick looking thing
Marcos for meringue or Puerto Rican Guido yes. But for Cuban salsa Guido we use a stick
Absolutely correct.
Correct!!!
@@davidsantiago6189 so you pronounce it like 'guiro', but it is spelt 'guido'? Is that Puerto Rican?
Amigo tiene el guiro al revés
El Güiro está al revés
guiro*
Guiro has more types of Rhythms than just those 2

We use a triangle stick for the guiro. :)
That is helpful!
