Great review thank you! I've had mine for about a year and what made me do research on it was the heart rate monitor. I was diagnosed with an inoperable cerebral aneurysm about four years ago. The reason for it not being operable (coil or clip) is because of its location (Anterior Communicating Artery) and size (small, thank God). I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety, and Depression so I need to keep my heart rate and blood pressure in check. HARD TO DO when being told you could have a stroke any time! But I have learned to let go of what I can't control and focus on what I can. Oura Ring has helped me stay in control of my wellness, for sure! Thanks again for this review, I just emailed it to friends. I "liked and subscribed" so I will be back! ~ Aloha, Christine
Finishing day 6 with Oura Ring. My first morning was 67 and I was really having to push myself to get through my day. Today I am up to 94. I am serious about getting quality sleep and this combined with my CPAP is getting me closer to my goal.
My Oura ring is finally here! On the truck out for delivery today. I have an Apple Watch and a Fitbit Charge 2. I am interested to see how the sleep monitoring compares. I’m also very interested in my body temps throughout the night. I wake up sometimes with hot flashes. Also want to get more active and I find collecting data motivating. Thanks for the video!
Well explained, Dr.Choi. I have fibromyalgia and am looking for a good health tracker. I was looking for videos explaining what the Oura ring is. Yours is only video I’ve come across with a clear and good explanation. I’m interested in getting one. Thanks.

According to the Sleep Junkies podcast with Curzio, he talks about the difficulty in accurately measuring/interpreting EEG waves (see 59m mark). The takeaway seems to be that it's near impossible to get accurate data at home using consumer-grade devices around the head (ex. UMindSleep S1), so I can only imagine how unreliable the data is from devices that claim to do it via the finger/wrist (Oura/sleeploop)! Similarly, Mathew Walker , 'skeptical cardiologist' and nootropedia analyze the data (ex. pubmed 28323455).
Hello Dr. Choi, thank you for the review. I have a question that you brought up during the video but I did not fully understand about putting the ring on airplane mode. If you put the ring on airplane mode, does the ring continue to record all your stats and then when you turn on Bluetooth again, it sends the info to the app? Also, if one uses the app to put the ring on airplane mode, then what wireless signal is the ring using that still connects to the phone that gives one control to turn off Bluetooth? Thanks again!
how is it powered? which finger does it go on? does it need wifi to operate? I have been monitoring my sleep with a trail camera, this ring thing looks awesome!
Dang. Love to have a real doctor reviewing this. I just did my review of it and it is much less informative... This is great. More docs should review the wearables! The tech is out there but doesnt get much credibility.
How can a sensor on your finger know how your sleep was? WIthout measuring EEG? Does it just come up with a "guess" based on your heart rate and body temperature? If it is not on your head when you sleep I just can not see how you can use the date it gives you?
Thanks for this review. How much reliant is the ring on bluetooth, e.g. how long can you have bluetooth deactivated? I imagine the ring can only hold so much data before it need sto transfer it to the smartphone app.
You’re welcome! The battery is the concern if you turn off bluetooth. I have left it in airplane mode only to find that the battery died. I dock and top up charge once every day or so.
Waiting for my oura ring to arrive. Your video was very helpful. I’ve never owned a health monitoring device because of the same issue (bulkiness, irritability) but the ring was a different idea.. does it need to be charged ? If anyone has measured it with an emf meter that would be good info to pass along here!
It does come with a ring charger, which charges very quickly. The ring can be placed in airplane mode. I sync the ring about once a day, charge it, and then put it back in airplane mode.
I'm intrigued by the Oura ring, although the company seems pretty messed up in terms and delivery, commitments and production. Beyond that, my sleep doctor swears that the only way to measure REM sleep is an EEG based polysomnogram ... and she claims the American Sleep Association considers anything short of this mostly a gimmick. Either they're protecting traditional sleep analysis (and their revenue) or Oura is making claims that are suspect.
I've wondered the same thing around accuracy. However, it is still valuable to looking at the changes over time, assuming consistent variance in measurements.
Dr. Aron Choi, ND Completely agree. It’s worth noting that decades ago the medical community was suspicious of oral mercury thermometers. Putting clinical tools in patient’s hands threatens their revenue.
Dr. Aron Choi, ND 22 months ago I was forced off of a benzodiazepine as a result of that I’m in bed in severe pain I don’t think I sleep more than an hour a day because I can never ever get comfortable ever the only semi-relief I get is sitting on the toilet without going into all my symptoms anyway I’m considering ordering one of these to see actually how much sleep I do get and how my brain is recovering

Oura says it is very very little. Don’t remember the exact number. It’s much less than a cell phone though. I like to use “universal precautions.” I minimize exposure as much as reasonably possible.
It provides HR while asleep and during “Moments” where you can set a timer for meditation/breathing and it will measure your HR and HRV. It does not provide instantaneous HR. A small drawback but not a deal breaker for me.
