I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! It’s frustrating to think that the roadwork guy could not have just said “hey guys, there’s fresh tar right there” rather than just telling a blind person that their dog might want to be wearing shoes!
I would’ve explained more, but at least he said something. Most people wouldn’t have.

It's not really his place to be telling a guide dog user how to take care of their dog though. The road was solid enough that they were walking on it and cars were driving on it, and the dog didn't appear to be in any pain or discomfort at the time. He asked about shoes, and Molly told him her dog didn't need them at that moment, so I don't really think it's fair to expect him to push back and explain himself further when she's the expert on her dog.
At that point, I don't really know how much of a difference it would've made, anyway--Elton John had already been walking on it. I think the worker deserves the benefit of the doubt
Oh my GOD. This near-exact thing has happened to me and my guide dog, except it was *wet cement* on one of my everyday sidewalks that workers had failed to block off. Both my guide dog and I waded right into it. That stuff hardens so so fast, which is scary. Luckily, the company manager was on-site and rapidly got us to one of the high-power hoses attached to the trucks (used for spraying off workers' boots and such). He hosed off my dog's paws before anything could harden. Then he hosed off my Converse as best as possible and paid me a bit of money to get my shoes replaced out of kindness😭
I've had more than one wet cement disaster over the years, which is unbelievable. Even to sighted people, wet cement can look just like darker/rained-on cement if not cordoned off properly or effectively, and a lot of "barriers" are shoddy/half-baked, like a random piece of plywood propped up across a park path.

Yes! I'm sighted and I've accidentally had a dog walking a little ahead of me go right through wet concrete that wasn't blocked off.
That’s nuts. I should ask my husband who has done concrete work and regular construction work if he’s ever witnessed anything like that.
I'm a dog groomer, so have lots of experience with gunk in dog's feet. Coconut oil works to break up tar, pine pitch, etc. that gets in dog fur. Pile it on the goop, let it sit a few minutes, and the tar or pitch will break up and come right off. Then wash the dog as usual.

I keep extra coconut oil on hand for this reason! Had it happen before and now always worried even though I live in Alaska, where 75% of the year the ground is covered in snow.
This, I am a groomer as well but also just picturing all the tar on his paws gave me serious anxiety 😢
Yeah, that construction worker should have been more clear on why he said Elton should have had shoes on. He obviously knew there was a reason for concern but stayed quiet. Glad it all worked out well in the end!

Thank you soo much for making the point that friends can be of various ages. I too have friends who are older and younger and for some reason it's often not normalized and people just assume friends are the same age. A side note, but very important !
I am also in the same boat when I was younger I had older friends and now that I'm older I have friends of all ages. Let's normalize friends of all ages lol

One thing that Gone to the Snow Dogs suggests that before they travel anywhere, they make sure they know where the emergency 24-hour vet is and have it written in a safe place. I believe this would be especially important for you, Molly, and how important your service dogs are.
The same thing happened to me with my (pet) dog! There was a sidewalk with this stuff on it - it looked the same as it does once it's set, so we just walked on it as normal. There were no barriers or signs or anything. It got stuck to my poor dog's feet. I noticed right away because she started walking funny, and it wasn't too bad to wipe off with some nearby leaves, thankfully. I don't understand why they wouldn't prevent people from walking on it!
OMG!!!! What an ordeal! I'm sorry you had to go through this and poor Elton John!!! In the US we have the ASPCA with a Hot Line for Poison Control. You are correct, it is (or was) $75 to talk with someone and they are VERY helpful. Glad it's over and you now have a story to tell with a good outcome!

My small dog walked in beach tar and getting it out of his toes was HORRIBLE, I'm sorry you had to deal with it on Elton John who is HUGE 😭

@@sarahbrennan545 In some places, oil, aka tar, seeps out of the ground naturally. where I live it seeps out from the ocean floor and washes ashore where beachgoers (like my dog and I) can step on it. The result varies from a couple spots of oil to having your whole foot/paw caked depending on the beach and how careful you are. To remove it, I usually use Goo Gone, dish soap, or even oily sunscreen in a pinch!
You can soak in coconut oil and it will help it come off way easier!
Can totally relate to panic-mode when your dog is concerned. Mine didn't walk in tar, but she got a huge thorn stuck in her paw. I'm walking her, she runs off into some underbrush, I hear her whimper and you better believe me I was there SO fast. Luna comes limping out and when I got her to show me her paw, there was this enormous thorn stuck in it. Call my grandma, completely panicked. She says pull it out, apply pressure, she's coming with the car.
Turns out after removing it she was pretty much fine and vet agreed. Limped for another day, then was running off into bushes again already.
We fear so much for our furry children. Don't feel bad for panicking when yours is a new guide dog on top of it all.
I’m sorry this happened Molly. I have a sort of similar story with my guide Cindi. We were ironically up in Canada, visiting family over the summer. We had traveled to a museum, and there was a hiking trail close by that had really cool stone formations that my friends and I wanted to visit. There was a sort of cat walk and staircase, leading up to the hiking trail. We started walking up it no problem, but then my dog started to hesitate and slow down. I urged her on, thinking she might be just a little unsure about how high we were, but she eventually just stopped. I bent down to see what the problem was, and realized that this catwalk was made up of spikes that acted like cleats to help with traction when it got icy in the winters. They were digging between her toes and paw pads and bruising her feet. I absolutely freaked out! I felt awful. There was no way I could have known since I of course couldn’t see the texture of the cat walk. But it had to be very painful. Luckily, I always carry her shoes in my bag, and got them on quickly. After that she could walk through the spikes no problem. But ever since that day she’s had issues walking over grates. Poor girl. I’ll check the texture of outdoor stair cases and grates every time now.

Molly, I just have to say this: You can really tell a story. I was riveted the whole time you were speaking.
Elton was probably like "this is the weirdest effin' pedicure EVER! What are you people on???" But I bet he felt a whole lot better afterwards!
Edit: I never had something like this happen with tar, but my family's old dog did step on a piece of gum. it ended up stuck between one of his toe pads and the big paw pad, and I mean not only stuck to the fur, then I could have just cut it off, no it stuck to the skin! At the time we were in my family's camper at a campground. There was nowhere with like a shower or anything where dogs were allowed. My parents and brother were away shoppijnjg... Thankfully there was an outdoor sink outside the bathroom building, so what I ended up doing was grabbing some soap, bringing this poor dog over there, and making him stand on his hind legs so I could put that sticky front paw in the sink and scrub away with the soap. it took a good while (it felt like forever but we're talking a couple of minutes) but I finally got that disgusting sh*t off! He was so unbelievably patient with the whole process and actually gave me a kiss before putting his front paws back down, as if he realized what I just did for him and wanted to say th anks.
What could've been more scary was if that gum was a sugar free version that was made with Xylitol! If your dog has any kind of gum that that gets stuck anywhere on his body, do not let them lick it or try to pull it off themselves. Always err to the cautious side and get it off yourself!
@@redhatpat9387 oh yeah. I dömt know about that at the that (this was in like 2002) but is definitely a frightening thought. I've developed the habit now of wiping, and thus checking, my dog's paws after every walk even if it's not rainy outside.

A similar situation happened to my cat once: he decided that he was going to walk across wet cement. Queue a few hours of my dad holding him and both of us trying helplessly to sooth him while I used vegetable oil to break up and massage out all the chunks of fully cured cement out from between his pawpads and alllll up in the fur on his feet. He did not understand that this was HIS OWN DOING and we were trying to help him haha
I've been watching for so long, but every time I see a title with "guide dog" I see gallop still in my head. It's sad but remembering Elton then feels like a gift.

Ohhhh man I'm very familiar with this struggle. I grew up on 19 acres in the woods and tar would just bubble up out of the ground, so our dogs were always roaming and coming home with paws caked in tar just itching to jump in our laps. Vegetable oil and some goo-gone-type solvent my dad had were our best friends. When we'd go on walks my dad would yell "DON'T WALK IN THE TAR" and they'd listen, so they KNEW BETTER, but they just didn't give a single F between them and they'd frolic in it with impunity if unchaperoned.
I love what you said about how it's important to have friends of every age. I honestly feel more connection to my older friends than friends of the same age or younger friends. I'm an old soul, so I love having deep conversations about life and the universe and a lot of people my age just want to do small talk and don't understand me.
I'm shocked that the roadwork guys wouldn't tell you that there was fresh tar there and to go around it. That sounds very irresponsible of him.

I feel like having friends of all ages is a very common experience for disabled and neurodivergent folks! I’m autistic and have always found it most challenging socially with people my age - perhaps it has something to do with feeling there is some sort of comparison, I’m unsure
I'm glad Elton got to feeling better so soon! Also I love that you have a friend named Tracy, because my name is Tracy and I have a real life friend named Molly lol. All the Mollys and Tracys of the world should unite and be friends.
2022 just keeps getting more challenging with these stories. I cannot imagine how everyone survived (human, canine, feline) that year with sanity intact. Well, I only have a cat currently but should I ever have a dog I feel a bit more ready for some of the challenges with this useful information.
Why couldn't the roadwork guy have explicitly said "there's wet tar here" when he commented about boots? You said he's a guide dog. That means you can't see the wet tar.
I haven't had a dog get tar on their paws, but I did have an Australian Shepherd walk through wet concrete. I'm so glad I was able to see it and catch it while it was wet so we could go hose it off before it dried.
So sorry this happened to you and your baby. Glad to hear you were able to help the poor puppy paws.

I was gonna say how did your friend not notice especially with carpet but then you said he was hiding his paws which kinda makes sense. Aww I’m so glad he’s fine now & your friend helped out right away ❤
My dad is an asphalt engineer. He used WD40 to get asphalt off of things, then dish soap to get the WD40 off. I'm glad you were able to get it off of him!!
Yes it has happened to me and my dog before but it was nowhere near as bad nor was it as late at night so it was a lot less stressful, I am also not blind so that possibly added something to the lack of stress from this situation. But it was difficult to get my Labrador German Shepherd to stay still long enough to get all of the goop off of his feet so I do sympathize and I hope that you are all well ❤️🩹
Poor puppy😢! And poor Molly😢. Never had that happen, but fun fact (not really fun) the streets in Arizona in the summer, like when it is 110 degrees, the asphalt can literally melt and your shoes become sticky. We avoid walking dogs on sidewalks and streets and stick to grass only. Since my dog was little I was able to carry him short distances. Oh! And going to PETSMART is tricky in the summer, same issue. Not fun! So glad he and you have recovered 😊
So glad he's okay! Really glad it wasn't hot so he didn't get burned... my dog is a pittie and doesn't show when she's in pain so I probably wouldn't have noticed right away either... that worker could have just told you there was wet tar though 🤦♀️
Pet Poison Helpline or ASPCA Animal Posion Control are pet poison control centers. You never know when a pet will be in a situation like this, or eat something they shouldn’t, bookmark or add the phone numbers to your phone if you have any kind of animal!
If you have a former abandoned dog like I do that will just eat anything (except for salad, but even makeup tissues) then having coal tablets at home to counter possible poisonings asap is a literal lifesaver!
Anecdote: she has eaten avocado peel from the trash, ¼ chocolate cake by jumping on the dining table and kicking off the cake cover with her snout, found half a cocoa energy bar in my purse and eaten a bunch of lost chewing gum (the tablet shaped ones) next to a bus station. All of them survived with a bad stomach ache thanks to the coal tablets.
(And yes we went to the vet for all of them but you need to get there in less than 30min to have an impact)
The only time we went to get her medication to puke is when she ate my long haired cat’s fur sausage the cat had just puked out. I knew the cat couldn’t digest it so I assumed the dog could neither. She did it out of spite bcs dinner was 5min late.
Had her in the practice and on puke medication in less than 30min. She puked her little soul out for 30min bcs the doctor left me alone and didn’t tell me it needed an antidote injection to stop. Made such an impact she won’t come within 5meters of a cat fur roll now.
I also have older friends. You learn more from branching out. My best friend is 78 and I am 35. I love her so much. We have so much to teach each other.

And you've really helped me work up to being more confident about my blindness and myself in general. you are such a role model and light for so many people, never forget that!❤
Poison control is free. It doesn't matter if it's a service animal or not. My dog ate a homemade Christmas ornament and I called poison control. The dog was fine but I made the operator laugh when I told her, "To be fair it was bone shaped aaand it did have his name on it." They didn't think it would be poisonous but told us how to induce vomiting. I'm glad Elton was fine. Sorry you went through that! I would have freaked out too.
Not sure where you live but I had to pay I think $75 when my cat ate chocolate to talk to a poison control animal nurse here in the states.

I actually asked my husband the other day if there still was a poison control center. When we were kids, we’d always bring home “Mr. Yuck” stickers & it was a whole teaching thing at school. But my kiddo has never talked about it at school.
Human poison control is free, but I’ve never heard of a pet poison control that is free. Usually they’re around $75-$85. Which is crazy.
Well now I know to Google that number & save it. I love when there’s resources available for service dogs.

I’m so happy Elton was okay! And I wish the workers had told you! That should be common sense. Someone tells you it’s their guide dog. Meaning they are blind. I would immediately think to say something .
We had something like that happen with my dog. They were filling cracks and she walked through them. I was home alone with her at the time. Thankfully it was only one paw and it wasn’t her whole paw. It was just above the pad so i could easily cut it off.
Very helpful lol- saving this for me and my service dog if we ever get into a sticking situation. (Hopefully it won’t be needed but you can never be too prepared)

Love the sweater and hat ,the story of what happened to Elton John was traumatic, and dramatic, but I am glad that he is fine now 😀. It's a good thing to learn from if you have any kind of pet .You were lucky to have such emotional support and professional advice about the situation. Hopefully there is no more situations like that in the future.

My heart was racing because I was so scared you were going to say that Elton was poisoned! Thank God he wasn't!!! You and Elton are such an amazing pair! It's always nice to hear other people having friends of various ages! A hobby I'm part of has people of all ages, but then explaining to people outside the hobby always made it seem like that was a weird thing
In Australia if something like this happens it's the fault of those laying the bitumen as they didn't properly warn people. And as such would be liable and thus have to cover the costs of vet bills, grooming required as a result and if on shoes, replacement of shoes.
A company laid the new surface on one of the roads near us but they used one that isn't suitable for our hot humid summers. The road was actually peeling up and coating the tyres of the cars and trucks. They had to replace everyone's tyres and compensate the truck companies as well as relay the road.
If there were any expenses at all it might be worth looking into
As a vet tech, obscure cases are interesting, not fun when we don't have answers though! For anyone that might encounter something uncommon: call your family vet so that they are aware of the incident (and may refer you to someone else), then the closest 24hr vet centre in your area, who might have had or heard of a case before. Just as how there are nurse hotlines for people, vet techs are there for you to consult in 24hr vet centres!

I used to work in an asphalt laboratory. We used Orange-Glo to get the tar off of our hands and off the equipment.

Oh goodness, similar happens every summer to my pup. He gets his paws in pinecone sap which is similar to the tar (has also happened to him). Many many pine trees where we live. I learned from a sweet elderly neighbor walking by the first time that olive/vegetable oil does wonders to get this stuff off. We stock up on it every summer in prep for the pinecone sap. And unfortunately, I cannot keep my pup away from it.. he is a poodle mix with fluffy curls so just going potty in grass will get the sap stuck to his paws. So glad you were able to find a solution, Molly! And that Elton John is a-ok!

Sorry you had to go threw this, but it’s good to hear he was totally fine.
I went through something similar with my retired dog. We were camping, and I guess certain areas were covered in tree sap. When we got home, I noticed that her paws were hard and stuck together. When I smelt her feet, I recognized the tree sap smell. Thankfully, tree sap isn’t as dangerous as tar, that I know of at least. So I had a lot more time to do a research and think about how to handle, getting the sap out of her fur. She isn’t exactly a long coded dog, but she is a shepherd, so longer coded than a lab would be. I find, that these difficult, stressful situations, allow us to put more tools in our tool belt, then someone who has never had to deal with difficult situation before.
Butter works wonders too. I stepped in tar when I was a kid because I liked how it felt on my bare feet and poison control said use butter. I lathered my feet in butter and it took it right off.
My dog had a VERY mild version of this! He stepped in tar that was mixed with pebbles on the sidewalk! It looks like a normal part of the sidewalk and as soon as he stepped on it he started walking all funny, lifting his feet up really high, and acting scared, poor guy! And he's a poodle with thick curly hair so we totally understand sticky furry paws! I was able to brush most the pebbles off so he could at least walk normally and then wash his paws with soap when we got home. Luckily we didn't have to soak them. Like I said, it was very mild and it was still a terrible experience! I can't imagine how scary and exhausting Elton John's situation was. Glad you all worked it out without having to travel to the emergency vet!
I have a white Great Dane with pink skin (nose and pads). A handyman was recaulking my windows and recommended putting a sealant in the lines of my concrete driveway. Sounded good to me. My Dane has full backyard access via a doggy door and I didn’t think anything of it. Well that stuff takes a long time to dry and she managed to walk in it. It’s a narrow crack in a driveway! She has an entire backyard and huge paws that should not fit in a crack. And yet she came in and left white prints on the wood floor then started hopping because her toe pads were stuck together. Wrangled her into the tub and as I am trying to get this tar/petroleum substance off of her, it is smearing onto the white shower and hardening. Coconut oil did not work. Dawn did not work. When I got it off a paw it stuck to me. She sat down on some when I was working on a front foot so I was trying to get it out of her fur. Huge mess and I was freaking out thinking it was poison. Handyman came over with an orange bottle of stuff that he used to get it off his hands. We were both in shower with a Great Dane tackling from all directions. Paper towel just shredded. I ended up using (and ruining) towels to clean up the mess. And then the handyman had to go buy more and redo the driveway. Oh, when looking outside it seriously looked like she purposefully walked the line of caulk/sealant. No digging. Just toe prints as all 4 feet managed to get in.
This happen to my standard poodle this summer. I used coconut oil and cut some it out. It was a mess and took hours.

I know this doesn't sound super helpful but I think it's kinda good to have such a horrible trauma at the very beginning of a relationship. It's a good divider. Either makes you really close and makes you invested feel invested, or it makes you realize you'd rather be alone with the trauma.
When my husband was just my boyfriend, we had only been together like a month and we both came down with an awful stomach virus (which we have since dubbed the vomit virus of 2014--it was so horrifically legendary that it needed a name). We didnt even live together at the time but when it struck we were both too sick to drive so we spent about 4 days together with 1 bathroom having the very worst stomachs bug of either of our lives. Trauma bonding for sure but also we are about to be together 9 years!

Some kind of citris (like orange cleaner) also can help get it off. My husband is a truck driver, worked emulsion one summer, valve broke on the truck, he got sprayed. Only thing he has was a citris oil based cleaning wipe. Got it off his skin pretty well.

Sorry you had to deal with this Molly! But as someone who works as an assistant at an emergency vet and was just accepted to vet school, this story was super interesting. Certainly not something I have ever seen before, but now I know what to tell future clients if it happens to anyone else. I also didn’t know about pet poison control until getting my current job but we tell clients to call them multiple times a day and it’s super useful. Wish everyone knew about that! I had no idea that it was free for service animals but that’s amazing.

How scary! I got something similar on my flip-flops once and it sucked. They were regrading the road and I walked across it after they had put down a layer of sticky tar before doing the final asphalt. The worker there motioned me to cross but it was a mistake. I had chunks of old, broken up road melted into my sandals! Thankfully, there was a Dollarama nearby so I could get a new pair but it sucked. I couldn't imagine that on anyone (or any dog's) bare feet.

My afghan hound got pine resin in his fur and we had to clip his fur to get it out. Ahhh! He did not appreciate it made his coat look choppy until it grew back.
Omg Molly same but not a service dog. Shortly after getting my cat in 2020, we were still working on trust. He somehow dipped his tail in my wax warmer. It took us all day to figure out what it was and by that time he had ingested so much and it was hardened and so difficult to get off. Vegetable oil and warm water was a lifesaver!!
if you ever suspect poisoning for your animal its always best to call poison control they do charge though or bring them straight to a vet instead of googling because there can be a lot of miss information

yes I agree the road worker should have said something also in Australia when we have wet tar they put up signs including brail ones I think only on the pathways though and they usually block them off I have only ever seen one so might still be new and was a small town with people who everybody knew everyone and was aware of people who where blind
A tip for everybody from a former disaster responder for animals do not use any Dawn soap use the blue colored Dawn dish soap. Don't use any of the other colors or smells jest the blue one.
I would contact the construction company and ask for reimbursement. They never blocked the road or put a sign. They have insurance and you should get paid for all these issues and expenses.
I had my cat Bimi for just one hour and he already had latexpaws because why not and than he jumped in my cereal, so on top of that he had now crunchy milkpaws and finally I had him sparkly clean .... he jumped in a pot full of glue. He learned me that he is a toddler on rampage and every door had to be closed. Luckily he is now almost 10 and not jumping in stuff anymore. So no tarpaws for this one, but a lot of other paws. I'm glad everything worked out well at the end for you.
Yeah kittens and crafts do not mix well XD I've had cats all my life, oh the exquisite chaos! Except my Benji, he just 'helped' by laying on all my fabrics and he did that until his last day.
@@cayenigma Awwww he sounds like he was a sweet and funny cat. My other cats when they were kittens never did strange things, besides the kittenstuff. Bimi was a jump in everything kitten. Branwen was a cat who like to help me to lay on top of jigsawpuzzles and sometimes he took a piece and burried it in the kittylitter. I still miss it that my jigsawpuzzles are now Branwenfree and steelfree. Although Bimi sometimes like to sit in the box full of pieces.

I am very surprised that the road workers didn’t stop you and say something.I have a seeing eye dog,and we always get stopped if there is any type of road work happening.
coconut oil will get tar off skin/paws. this info will also come in handy on certain SoCal beaches and by the tarpits and LACMA

Same thing happened to my dog, who is just a tiny, fragile pet 😂 We were at a campground and I don't remember the weather, but I think the pavement must have been wet at least part of the time we were there. When we go camping, my dog and I walk constantly, as I use a wheelchair and cannot get in and out of our camper myself. I did not notice anything unusual, since our routine is so much different when we are outside all day. It wasn't until we were on our way home that I notice what I am sure was tar stuck in between her paws. She was acting a little abnormal and didn't want me touching her feet, but again, we had just walked constantly for a few days, so it seemed normal to me. I tried everything to get the buildup out of her paws, but nothing worked. I think eventually it worked its way out as her hair grew.
Oh, yes, getting tar in Guide Dogs pause, not a pleasant experience! When I was younger, I was walking home with my aunt, and came into a similar situation where in the road was still open, but the timer was not yet dry. Trying to get the dogs paws, clean upon our arrival at home… What a nightmare! Glad to hear that you guys are okay, hope you don’t have another experience like that.

I don't know what you feed your guide dogs, but corn, wheat and soy are very common allergens for dogs and the signs I always look for are paw-licking among others. If there is an allergen in their food, this might explain the reasons the others licked more. He might not be allergic if the others are.
What a nightmare!! So glad everything worked out ok. Sounds almost as bad as a dog getting skunked. Poor baby. These are the times you wish your dog could talk and just tell you what's wrong.

As a former dog groomer, everything that you did was fantastic. The only thing that I would have done beyond that in a professional environment is use a #15 surgical blade to shave his paw pads, only because I have the training to do so.
For anyone out there who has a dog/cat, *plain blue Dawn* dish soap is both pet safe and magical - it will get you out of nearly any bath related jam.
