@esmeelafleur I think there is a place for TVs in the home if they are used responsibly. Local weather if there's bad weather coming, or a really good old movie, ballet or symphony, cooking, gardening, carpentry, art lessons, sewing and quilting lessons. Most of the rest on tv is terrible, tho. Caring and watchful parents have to keep tv, like any other weapon, locked away from the kids.

I stopped watching TV in 2013 and I don’t miss it. Although I do watch RUclips videos, I am selective and try to watch reliable Christian content. I also avoid all computer games, for their violence and ugly and mostly demonic scenes. Instead, I try to devote a half hour or more every day (even during vacation) to silent prayer, and when possible to read books to help me grow in my faith. I also associate with friends who are Christians and attend Christian events. This way one can detach from the worldly things. This has really helped me draw closer to Jesus, and with each passing year I hate the world more and more. My real home is with Jesus in heaven, not this world.

exactly, I liked to watch television in 90's... golden times.
but i was infected by erotic movies anyway (was very tempting for teen's mind... they were transmitten after 10PM ) . watched also lots of action/shooting movies, lots of kills going around... in that time, I didnt find it disturibing ,with it was, for young mind. Lots of explosions, you know, from movies like pulp fiction. some of them were good tho (not like garbage movies after 2005). I watched also lots of socialistic movies, they were transmitted quite often in 90's and early 2000, as we were socialistic coutnry with lots of good movies... those movies were not so cancerous... they were good. And without sexual stuff. I still watch them from time to time (they are christian compatible, particular family ones, but without faith of course, as comunists didnt try to show christians)
But after 2005-2010, television started to be so garbage.
I stopped to watch it in late 2011 - early 2012.

It is a shame though, that my kids can’t even watch a cartoon movie without hints of homosexuality be dropped every five minutes. When our priest blessed our home last year, he was distraught at how our children had tvs in their rooms to help them fall asleep at night. We immediately took them out and our life has calmed down in regard to sleep schedules and such. Even children shows on RUclips, pornography pops up…on a platform that has banned all outlets of sanity…the insane and evil is applauded. Since my teenage years I’ve been into punk rock music, and the line that permeated many songs was “smash the discos” for its promotion of drugs and such. Now, I say “smash the televisions”. Another incredible and providential video! My fiancé and I were reading some St. John Chrysostom this week and agreed that with how he spoke about the theatre, he’d definitely agree that watching movies and TV is really, really bad!
    Some quotes to consider…
“Why do I talk about the theatre? Often if we meet a woman in the marketplace, we are alarmed. But you sit in your upper seat, where there is such an invitation to outrageous behaviour, and see a woman, a prostitute, entering bareheaded and with a complete lack of shame, dressed in golden garments, flirting coquettishly and singing harlots' songs with seductive tunes, and uttering disgraceful words. She behaves so shamelessly that if you watch her and give consideration, you will bow your head in shame. Do you dare to say you suffer no human reaction? Is your body made of stone? Or iron? I shall not refrain from saying the same things again. Surely you are not a better philosopher than those great and noble men, who were cast down merely by such a sight? [275] Have you not heard what Solomon says: "If someone walks onto a fire of coals, will he not burn his feet? If someone lights a fire in his lap, will he not burn his clothing? It is just the same for the man who goes to a woman that doesn't belong to him." For even if you did not have intimate relations with the prostitute, in your lust you coupled with her, and you committed the sin in your mind. And it was not only at that time, but also when the theatre has closed, and the woman has gone away, her image remains in your soul, along with her words, her figure, her looks, her movement, her rhythm, and her distinctive and meretricious tunes; and having suffered countless wounds you go home. Is it not this that leads to the disruption of households? Is it not this that leads to the destruction of temperance, and the break up of marriages? Is it not this that leads to wars and battles, and odious behaviour lacking any reason? For when, saturated with that woman, you return home as her captive, your wife appears more disagreeable, your children more burdensome, and your servants troublesome, and your house superfluous. Your customary concerns seem to annoy you when they relate to managing your necessary business, and everyone who visits is an irritating nuisance.”
“The cause of this is that you do not return home alone, but keeping the prostitute with you. She does not go visibly and openly, which would have been easier. For your wife could have quickly driven her away. But she is ensconced in your mind and your consciousness, and she lights within you the Babylonian furnace, or rather something much worse.”
“Therefore I lament and am in torment, because after receiving such a brutal outrage you return from the theatre, and for the sake of a small pleasure you undergo continual pain. For even before the punishment of Hell, you demand the ultimate penalty here. Tell me, does it not merit the final punishment, to nurture such a desire, to be constantly enflamed, and to carry everywhere the furnace of unnatural love and the condemnation of your own conscience?”

    Wise wise words as usual.
I haven't really watched any television for about 15 years now, but I'll never forget what it did to my perception as a young man.
Took me years to rebuild my self reliance and ability to think critically. Endless hours of battling with my own cognitive dissonances.
I think social media is the real devil these days though... These upcoming generations are literally hooked up 24/7 for most of their childhoods.
It's going to be difficult for a lot of them to be able to break free from the digital shackles.

I needed to be told this father. For years I have watched BBC news at first because I thought that it simply would not do to be ignorant of the world, but as much as I listen to the tragedies they offer and inform me of, they offer nothing by way of instruction. I am brought back to the religious fantasy of Dante, in which he describes 'informers' as having their place below, and I look upon the world in which so often the only instruction that people are willing to take is for the sake of their livelihood. To discern God's will is something I yearn for, should I summon my instructions or somehow put my need for instruction to God as a matter of prayer? I find a man can only do what is inside him, but instructions are instructions, and so I thankyou for your insights into guarding my soul by way of watchfulness of my intake. The Father bless you

Beautifully and insightfully said. I wonder if or how important it is to keep up with the world to prepare-is that a rationalization? Seeing so much darkness has allowed me to go inward and deeper in silence and prayer, am praying this place brings me closer and closer to the ground of our being: Our Father. Otherwise it seems to me, it’s just recycled nihilism.

We need to be so careful how we use it: the less the better, except for things that are truly godly and helpful to our spiritual life & growth! Since being born again, (6 months ago) I haven't had much desire to watch secular things or listen to secular music. When I would try to in the beginning of my faith, I got the sensation of being pulled away from Him so I stopped. Since then, there have been times I have been times I have been exposed to it in my environment (work, or out in public) and I have become so sensitive to the evil that's coming out of it I become irritated by it. I notice every Blaspheme, every curse word, and the despicable teachings. It feels like a bombardment of pure evil. I am so greatful to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for softening me to these things and chipping away my old self. I invite him to continue working on me so I can follow Him better and better everyday. In Jesus name, Amen🙏

Thank you, Fr Spyridon. This is a message, a warning really, that the whole world needs to grasp and come to terms with more than ever. Unfortunately, I'm not so certain it's as simple as ditching TV, but ditching the communities that uphold these norms and attack others for not obeying them (Not allowing your child to watch TV is likely to arouse suspicion in the child's school if they show signs of being too detached from the disney culture of today, leading to a visit from CPS).
Those of us who have already partially escaped (none of us are truly out of the belly of the beast, yet.) have a lot of big questions to ask ourselves nowadays.

As a music lover, I can tell you that listening to Orthodox choir, classical and jazz is a very enriching experience. Instrumental music is generally spiritually safe and even beneficial.
If the music you listen to is full of sinful content, it's more than likely being produced for the sake of greed (money), and not for the art itself. It's spiritually corrupted.

    • @KatAdVictoriam
      @KatAdVictoriam 8 месяцев назад +1

@@jorschu I mainly listen to old jazz and classical and orthodox chants on the whole; though classic jazz that are pop songs and not strictly instrumental have questionable themes at times, even those from the 1920s. It's heavy metal that would not be considered edifying to the spirit or giving glory to God and its been challenging for me to give it up entirely, which I suppose speaks for its hold on me and increasing need to cut it out, I suppose.
Anyway, I do agree with you and those are forms of music that are uplifting and enriching and I have a love for them.

It is poison. The content definitely, but also, just how much time we spend on it. I had a nightmare the other day that I was trapped in the digital world and couldn't get out. After watching this video I realized that that nightmare is my reality! My phone is the last thing I put down and the first thing I touch when I wake up. If I can't stand still and watch something, like I'm doing chores or going to the store, I listen to a podcast. I'm always plugged in, always consuming. The father called it an enslavement, and it is true. It's time I got out of this enslavement I've created for myself.

My good old granny died back in 1999 aged 88 said she had in her lifetime watched people around her go from believing the world was flat driving in horse and carriage and growing their own food making their own furniture and clothes totally self sufficient and an reliant upon others outside of the large families in which they lived And during the course of her lifetime she had witnessed them claim they had landed on the moon and discovered the planet was round not flat gone from teaching flat earthed around her in her Catholic Irish school gone from horse pulled carriage to horseless carriages powered by electric which we never believed and thought she must’ve heard it from somewhere and win the first supermarket Safeway open in Bude in Cornwall she started to view the modern world with some suspicion to the degree that she said none of the fruit or vegetable in the supermarket was any good and she went back to growing her own and got my mum into planting an orchard and starting a vegetable garden to save on shopping Was very clever and I remember her saying to me when I was a teenager before she died that she questioned whether anything she had seen happening her life in the last nearly 2 centuries had been genuinely true she said it seemed unfeasible that we could’ve come from such a live to the existence we had come to know in the late 90s this is before the days of the Internet mobile phones and she had become entirely distrustful of what was written in any of the newspapers and entirely distrustful of what was being said on television often claiming that she knew they had changed history😮 what an incredible level of discernment that women had considering the time in which she grew up it’s funny because she seemed the least susceptible to programming of anyone in the family and I know it worried her deeply the effect that modern life was having on her daughter her son-in-law and her grandson!
    (God bless you Mary Smith
