  • Is Methadone the Key to Less Addictive Opioid Pain Medicines? Scientists from NIDA’s Intramural Labs discuss what we can learn from methadone, a drug used to manage opioid addiction that does not have euphoric effects as strong as many other opioids.

    I purposely left pain management to go to a clinic. The CDC doesn't allow doctors to administer therapeutic dosage levels anymore and now thanks to CV your visits to the clinic are much fewer. I've been there two months and am now going only once a week, and counseling is over the phone as well. Simple. Also thanks to the fact that clinics now accept insurance I have so far paid $0.00, yeah. So in two more months I will receive my meds. at my normal levels before the CDC destroyed my life once a month for free....I now have a significant physical presence in my life and going to a clinic and leaving pain management has been a good decision.

    I never felt euphoric from mscontin. I took 15 mg immediate release and 15 mg time release both 3x daily for years until moving to Texas and being turned away by all pain facilities. Now Im left to figure out how to deal with all of this nerve pain from a six car pile up and come off opioids at home. Its cruel and inhumane! The government freely gives meth to heroine addicts but if you’re in chronic pain good luck. Lord help us.

    You can 100% be addicted to Methadone it is a full opioid agonist and does create euphoria even in lower doses, The only beneficial part of it is that in higher doses it does block the opioid receptors from other narcotics but other drugs do this much better like suboxone. it is a good painkiller for cancer and other chronic pain issues but its rarely prescribed for that anymore do to the fact yes it is addictive and also its easy to overdose on. Its also a bad way to get off of other narcotics because say Hydrocodone for instance lasts around 7-8 days in your body whereas Methadone can last 30 days making the time it takes to get off of it much much longer than the initial drug you started on. People should remember that this is a drug that is about 4x stronger than morphine about the same as Dilaudid.

      All of our bodies react differently to different medications, we can talk about what people experience in general , but the truth is methadone seems to be better for your aunt than morphine. I would trust her word.
      But to answer you question, methadone is often given to patients like your aunt because of the long half life of methadone. It doesn’t need to be administered as frequently as morphine and lasts longer than morphine. Additionally methadone is given to chronic pain patients sometimes if other pain medications (morphine) have not been effective.
      I’ll be praying for both of you, and wish you the best of luck .

    Methadone is not the answer to an alternative to opioids. First Methadone is meant for short term to get off of heroin, oxycodone etc. Now Methadone is abused just the same. In high doses methadone does cause euphoria. Longer on methadone, harder it is, longer the withdrawl. Second, Methadone if taken properly does not help with pain that much. It does in a tiny way but no. Euphoria doesnt cause addiction, high amounts of dopamine release from any opioid will cause addiction, brain stops producing the natural chemical and you withdrawal and puke and sh$! on yourself curled up in pain. Lastly Methadone deteriorates your body as it stays in your spine, bones, muscles etc. So No Methadone is furthest from a safe alternative. One purpose. Get on a low enough dose not to be sick and ween off comfortable as quick as you can.

  • @DocBree13
    @DocBree13 3 года назад +3

    This didn’t even discuss methadone as a treatment for pain (only for addiction and restless leg syndrome) and I assume the dosage would be different and therefore this study wouldn’t necessarily be applicable to it in its guise as an analgesic. In addition, I suspect many addicts are not using opiates to get high, but rather to get “well,” so I don’t know if this study really shows anything about the safety of methadone as compared to other opiates.
    In fact, if the purpose is indeed to get high, I would suspect that methadone would be more dangerous as users would potentially use higher doses of methadone in the attempt to achieve that effect. I have seen other studies which report that higher doses of methadone do induce a state of euphoria.
    Finally, everything I’ve read and all of the documentaries I’ve watched say that methadone is by far the hardest opiate to get off of. The suggestion that it’s a non-addictive option is patently ridiculous and this video is irresponsible and dangerous.

      Brenda, there's a difference between addiction and dependence that you're missing here, and understanding this makes all the difference in the world. Yes, one becomes dependent on methadone. It is an opioid agonist, meaning it fits the same receptor on a nerve cell as morphine, diamorphine, oxycodone, or any other opioid agonist. However, methadone has pharmacological properties that are different from the other opioids. The important one here is that it does not cross into the brain as quickly as diamorphine, etc. and therefore does not stimulate the reward center within the mid-brain which creates the effect that we call euphoria. This is what the docs here meant when they say methadone does not "reward" the user. A methadone user is dependent on methadone and high-dose users will most likely need the medication for the rest of their life. But people can function and lead a normal life when using methadone, it is a safe when used by a trained physician, and it doesn't stimulate the reward center causing addiction and the self-destructive behaviors that come with it like risk acceptance, drug seeking, chasing the high (dose escalation,) cravings, and all the rest. Also, and this is important for many, methadone is an excellent pain medication, especially for those with chronic neuropathic pain.

      @@DocBree13 listen heroin isn't a bad drug and there's nothing wrong with it. I don't believe in a "bad drug" reguardless of legalities. Whats dangerous is it being illegal, ie cut with adultrants such as fentanyl and the desperate measures people have to take. Its not just about getting high, but if thats your thing then cool, no one should fault you for it. Alot of people use it to self medicate and treat pain etc. Emotional or physical. It's just the stigma that's associated with it from all the judgemental assholes over the years. You can die from drinking water if you over do it. The dose makes the poison. We have to stop acting like drugs are inherently good or bad, they're just molecules. They're tools, they can be a godsend or a curse. You the individual decides which one it is. No drug should be illegal. It's never going to stop their use and it does way more harm than good keeping them illegal and creating a black market. Think about the tax money we could use if we legalized all substances and made it to where every user knew they were getting a pure and clean product. And we could use the taxes to better society and fund programs to help people stop using if they so choose .
      It could be so much better than it is now. It's been done in other parts of the world and the results look promising. Hopefully one day we'll come to our senses regarding these things and stop thinking we can control what our fellow brothers and sisters put in their bodies. It's their decision at the end of the day, not ours. The sovereignty over one's own body is a God given right. Governments be damned.
      Human beings have used these things for millennia and they're not about to stop anytime soon. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's in our nature.

    As someone who has been on methadone for 20 plus years, and was on heroin along with other opiates before that, quiting heroin was comparatively easy, staying off heroin was hard. Methadone is good for staying off other opioids, but it is very hard to come off. Ask anyone who has tapered and or just kicked, the withdrawal last longer and is more intense.
