I was there when Waldemar gave the talk on this painting at the Walker. His enthusiasm and genuine love for the painting, Dobson and Liverpool was electric.
Yes, it's a wonderful painting. I absolutely love that dark blue mass in the foreground. What is puzzling is why there appears to be an identical pair of these paintings in the gallery?
If you like this guy, and you don't already know about them, check out the 'Perspective' channel here, which as a ton of his documentaries. They are all wonderful.
Waldemar Januszczak seems more relaxed in a live situation like this, just talking and sharing what he knows. In his documentaries, he is emphatic, declamatory, and seems to think he has to "perform" his material and play to the groundlings in order keep it interesting. Still, it works! :)
I would lay the blame at the foot of those of the Establishment and school educators who focus on the famous names e.g. Leonardo, Reubens etc ; I originate from the Midlands and introduced to Joseph Wright but later no one ever mentioned him !!!
Yes, I understand the singularity and uniqueness of this Dobson painting, but it is quite coarse in its application and appearance....and there are twins of them behind Waldemar @ 1:14. SMH x 2
Beheading the King "Who'd have thought the English were capable of that ?" After the last year I'm very sad to say that we appear capable of doing just about anything, as long as the mob rule .. BTW Yes Dobson Is fantastic.
I think he's an amazing teacher and charismatic presenter and we need more of his programs please 🙏
How lucky we are to have Waldemar Januszczak!
He is my favorite art historian by far, intelligent and entertaining
Waldemar’s enthusiasm is wonderful.
Jerome O'Mara, Yes they are. He is wonderful.

It's a spare; in case we somehow misplace "the only one".
'Turns out the first is by Matthias Stom and Dobson copied it. ruclips.net/video/2EbN-gP21T8/видео.html (go to 38 minutes, 20 seconds)

Great.
One obviously has to watch the whole program to know this but why are there twó identical Dobson paintings ( one behind Waldemar ) ?
@@felixdunkel2091
Exactly what I thought it was. TY
@@felixdunkel2091 thanks for that. 🙂
Wow sir waldemar
wow
So why are there 2 identical paintings side by side? Can you explain the differences?
judging by the forearm muscle on the executioner, the model's first job wasn't as an executioner, it may have been cow milker.
did you not want to explain the 'two' version?
Nice.
Saying that "it's the only picture", when he's standing in front of two pictures lol.

Have I missed something? Why are there two?
Love Waldemar, shame Walker can never get the lighting right, in the galleries and on camera!
Who is walker?

I like him but his favourite painting is a copy?
probably un equaled in the public sphere since sir Kenneth Clarke
Caravaggio: Ribera and Dobson. Will we ever see their like again?
Not from this Postmodern rabble!
Agreed!
It may be reminiscent of the beheading of Charles the first
saying it is one of a kind when there is a second one on the wall next to it. is he gaslighting us?
How are the British able to pronounce his surname??????
