1994 Belmont Stakes - Tabasco Cat

- Tabasco Cat gave a dynamite encore to his victory in the Preakness when he won the Belmont Stakes yesterday by two lengths over Go for Gin and took giant strides toward the front of this year's talented class of Triple Crown colts.
The frisky, frolicking chestnut from California, who likes to roll in sand and kick his heels in the yard behind the barn, spent most of the mile and one-half stalking Go for Gin, the winner of the Kentucky Derby five weeks ago, then caught him in the homestretch and roared past.
It was remarkably like their duel in the Preakness, when Tabasco Cat ran first and Go for Gin was second almost all the way. And Go for Gin survived the customary closing rush from Strodes Creek today to keep second place by half a length in a small field of just six horses.
So, for the 16th straight year since Affirmed did it, nobody swept the Triple Crown. But Tabasco Cat and Go for Gin dominated the series: Go for Gin won the Derby and ran second in the Preakness and Belmont. Tabasco Cat ran sixth in Kentucky and won the next two. But they still may have to settle things with Holy Bull, the imposing gray colt who has won 8 of his 10 races but skipped the Preakness and Belmont.
"Next?" said D. Wayne Lukas, who trains Tabasco Cat. "I'd say off the top of my head, the Travers at Saratoga in August. Sometime, we want to look Holy Bull in the eye."

Tabasco Cat had a double dose of Princequillo in his lineage, a famous long-distance runner. And of course, Secretariat, Terlinqua one of the fastest fillys ever, Northern Dancer, Crimson Saint another fast filly, Bold Ruler a sprinting champion, and Storm Cat. I would have sold everything and put my money on Tabasco!
Tabasco Cat was the first horse I ever remembered winning. I was only six, but I remember these races well.
Loved late 80s thru 90s racing
Nice racehorse. Whenever I hear the name, I remember Jeff Lukas. Tragic. Horse racing is a dangerous sport.😳
Tabasco Cat was sired by Storm Cat who was grandsired by Secretariat via his daughter Terlingua, Storm Cat's dam. So, that makes Tabasco Cat Secretariat's great grandson.
Awesome name!!

@bruce robbinsHe had a double dose of Princquillo! How can you forget BOLD RULER, Terlinqua, Storm Cat, Northern Dancer, and WAY back a bit of Man O War! SO many great horses in his bloodline, Royalty of Thoroughbreds!
@bruce robbins Ive been reading up on Discovery. To me, but Im NO expert, his body conformation looks a lot like Secretariat. He has the same massive neck and muscles on top of muscles like his skin is too tight, lol. BEAUTIFUL horse and very talented once he matured.
@bruce robbins Poor Sham, he had the Princquillo line and he had the big heart, but something about the genetic cocktail Secretariat had made ALL the difference. I looked at Ladys Secret and she has double doses, (I know that isnt the correct term} of Nearco and Nasrullah. Am I safe to say that Nearco/Nasrullah is what makes a good runner great?
@bruce robbins Sham was a GREAT horse, but I honestly think he wasn't LOVED like Secretatariat obviously was. Watching him get whipped on the stretch in the Preakness was IMO animal cruelty. In the Belmont, he was pushed too far. He never raced again. Such different outcomes for such talented athletes.
Ive been looking for info on a horse named Prince Shira. His sire was Sham, and his Dame Secretive Girl, sired by Secretariat. You would think he was a great one by looking at his genes, but I cant find a thing.Do you have any info?

O
I love horse racing but, I wish they would stop using the whip!
Obviously, never rode or been around horses. 😮
