    I laughed when Andrew paced out that log in seconds, Wranglerstar would still be talking about his genuine North Western loggers tape, artistically videoing himself nailing the end in, and then giving us a 15 minute story about the time his Father wrestled a bear during a blizzard back in '62...

    The reason that hydraulic thumbs give out against the digging cylinder is so that thumbs cylinder doesn’t get bent. Should be able to adjust the relief pressure so it doesn’t give out as easulu

    • @jayirving6996
      @jayirving6996 5 лет назад +9

      Correct.. Any machine with a thumb has a pressure regulator set lower than the bucket cylinder pressure. He can turn it up like he wants but then stuff will probably break

    • @davidtyndall9604
      @davidtyndall9604 5 лет назад +4

      I have never worked on trackhoes but I did do hydraulic work for a number of years. Hydraulic oil is not compressible and is actually stronger than steel under compression loading. If the thumb cylinder is moving under a load then you have oil "bypassing" some where. Either in the piston chevrons or the valve body or a relieve valve setting is to low. Good luck on working out this problem.

    • @Tailss1
      @Tailss1 5 лет назад +2

      This totally. There should be a relief adjustment but be careful turning it up too high.

    • @davidtyndall9604
      @davidtyndall9604 5 лет назад +2

      @elem arha Sir, I do not know if the valve that operates the thumb cylinder is an "open center" or a "closed center" valve but I do know this for a fact, if the valve is a "closed center" valve then both lines are blocked off when the valve is in the neutral position.
      That means that no oil can move through the lines, in either direction. That means that the oil in the thumb cylinder is NOT exposed to any "relief valve". On an open center valve system it would still only be exposed to a relief valve during the moving event. It is a safety feature that is required on all hydraulic systems to prevent devices from "lowering" by accident under a heavy load.

    • @megape95
      @megape95 5 лет назад +1

      @@davidtyndall9604 open center or closed center only has to do with de pump system. Pressure return to tank or non return.
      Most of the valves that are used with small and mid sized excavators are build with closed a and b ports with pressure reliefs n the cilinder ports a&b

      Have you ever considered that it might not be Andrew they’re not giving him personally a thumb’s down, but rather the subject matter of the video? I, for one, don’t care for the snowmobile videos. I get the feeling he posts some of those just to be posting something. Nor am I crazy about the jet skis or wave riders, though I do have to admire his courage for practically swimming in the Hudson. God knows what’s in that water. For instance, I like Samuel L. Jackson, but I don’t have to like every movie he makes. I’m not attacking Jackson, just the movie. I would say I’ve given a thumbs up to 99% of his videos, but there is that odd one which just doesn’t grab me. This video is one of his very best. It’s a rather brilliant essay on the importance of having a thumb on the excavator, and I got much out of it. And those very rare occasion where I don’t care for the video, rest assured that the fault lies in the subject matter, not with Andrew.

    That was nice seeing the whole fleet of excavators all at once, and how you made Levi's foot print. Like others said the pressure is altered on the thumb spool to be lower. There is a video of a guy putting a new hyd thumb on a JCB 212 that had a double acting pedal, but it was set up to run a hammer with a free return and one feed. The kit fitting instructions told him how to plumb in the extra line and set the spool relief pressures so the thumb moved with the bucket like your Kubota does.
    There is a thumb kit available now for the extender style like the Deere has. JCB use the same system, the thumb bracket mounts to the bottom of the extending boom. It then has a dog leg crank in the bracket that steps out over the fixed part of the dipper stick with the rest of linkage on. The rest of the cranked out bit's not fixed to the stationary part, so the extender still slides out and the grapple goes with it. Yes a backhoe thumb's not quite so nice but it sure beats picking awkward crap up by hand and loading it in a truck L.O.L. Thanks for the video, take care .

    Great video I love watching all your videos, but I just wanted to clarify the hydraulic thumbs, have a relief valve on them so that if you curl the bucket against it to much it will allow the thumb to be pushed by the bucket. They do that because if they did not you would end up bending the hydraulic cylinder, from curling against the thumb to hard, which would lead to very costly repairs.

    The hyd thumb curls in with the bucket.... that's normal. The relief valve for thumb is set lower than relief for bucket. If they are set the same, you would bend/break hyd cylinders. Normal operation for a hyd thumb.

    From an old Vocational Teacher. This may be the best video you have ever made. GREAT examples of thumbs; WONDERFUL progression of the thumbs with advantages and short Cummings of the samples, Quality reviews and recommendations!
    An option I have just come up with on plumbing thumbs, “I'm doing this on my current thumb build” evolves plumbing the thumb into the bucket curl cylinder hydraulics. Plum the top hoses into each other, plum the bottom hoses into each other. Then put a electronic hydraulic valve inline of the top hoses. Install a electric momentary switch onto one of your hand controls. When you want the thumb to move, press the switch; both the bucket and the thumb will open or close with the switch activated, let go of the switch and the thumb will stay at this position.
    Again congrats on the Top Quality video!!! Paul

    That's an innovative way of paying for new tracks for the Excavator! 25 track pads at $50 each, minus shipping is a good chunk of the cost of 2 tracks!

    Excellent! I've got a little Kubota backhoe loader. It's about 3/4 the size of your 310C. It's early 80's and built well with decent size rams. Had it 15 years and it's done a lot for its size. After watching your vids I've been thinking about fashioning a thumb for it. The 4 in 1 bucket is useful, but a thumb would be pretty easy to knock up I figured. I could not have asked for a more appropriate video. It's like you read my mind. Thanks mate I really appreciate it!

      Wouldn’t I be able to just use the lines off the swing boom, and control thumb w the floor controls?
      I’m not sure, but I think I’d also have to get new joystick w other function control if I went w diverter. So confusing lol. Hey I have a great idea, I’m from colebrook ct not to far from you. I’ll bring up machine and you can make great video of you installing thumb on my b27. Lol. Been watching your videos from the beginning. Always look forward to your material. Thanks commenting back.

    Very interesting video Andrew, educational too. I don't even work with machines but I love watching this stuff. There was obviously a lot of work(and thought) went into this one, even before you got the camera out, and that makes for a professional production.👌 It was interesting; on the couple of occasions I thought "I wonder why he ........." you gave gave the answer to my question in the next sentence.👍
    The look on Levi's face as you fingerprinted him was priceless; I don't think he was as impressed with the procedure as you were.
    As others have said, I really don't get the 159 👎s - can really only be jealousy??
    Great stuff !! Cheers for now,🍻🎅

    Such great videos from you Andrew. You always have vital advice and nuggets of information, bonus stuff! I have a backhoe and was trying to decide hydraulic or fixed thumb. All your machines and the demonstrations, my man, you're a great teacher. I've found an electronic valve assembly for operating a thumb or other 2-way attachments, just under $500. But I'm not sure if I want to bother with all the hookups and fabrication of new lines etc. Your video here is a wealth of things to consider. I'd think they would have an electric version, a screw jack of sorts. But anyway I watch a lot of your videos. regarding your comments about the pivot swing feature. I'm a plumber so the excavator's hinge/pivot swing feature at the arm root is very useful in aligning the angle of the trench, or especially when you dig close to a house wall. So that is why I use it all the time, indispensable for me. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos.

The sound quality while running the machines was fantastic! Loved the backhoe stuff and you’ve changed my opinion on their usefulness. Amazing how you’ve gone from reading scripts in your first videos to this natural informative production! The Levi portion at the end was great. Got a piece of Track coming! Andrew your collection of excavators reminds me of my boot collection. Both were accumulated over years. Each one served its purpose as desired. Every one was chosen because I could afford it at the time and it fit just right. I kept the ones I did because, with the right care, they have lasted forever. I keep all my collection in one closet. You must have a pretty big closet for yours. Thanks for the video.
