- The debate of the narrow mouth Nalgene vs. the wide mouth Nalgene must finally be settled. After years of backpacking experience with both the narrow mouth and wide mouth Nalgene, I feel that I am qualified to finally end this long-fought debate. The Great Nalgene Battle is over.
Did I miss anything in this video? Keep the battle (friendly debate) going in the comments! What bottle do you prefer camping? Ultralight do you avoid Nalgene altogether? Got a better hiking water bottle for the hiking trails?
Like, share, comment, subscribe, all that jazz! Thanks so much for watching! Спорт
Never thought Ill be watching a video about narrow vs wide mouth water bottle. But here we are now. Cheers
And I never thought it would cause such a debate!!
Hahahha,,no kiddin me too lol
Congrats you're officially addicted to RUclips
This is such a niche video, but just what I was after! I've already got the 32 and 48oz wide-necks and was thinking about a 16 for around town,. My toss-up is between packability (wide-neck is more space efficient/less poky in a messenger bag) and drinkability. I do love the classic shape though.
Yes it's probably the weirdest thing anyone could ever have a debate about that is for sure, and even weirder to be the guy making a video about it 😳. I've never had that issue having always put the bottles in mesh pockets on the outside of a pack (no poky issue), but definitely another point to consider for sure!
Humangear 2nd cap gives the best of both worlds.
I love the narrow mouth. I lost my bottle a year ago and have never found it. When I got a replacement it was a wide mouth because it’s all my local store had. The wide mouth has it’s advantages, but I still love the narrow mouth. It is easier to fill from my fridge with the wide mouth. I have spilled water on myself with the wide mouth. It doesn’t happen often, but I hate it when it does. I don’t like the easy pour attachment. It can get bacteria from touching it when taking it out to refill if your hands aren’t 100% clean. Anyway, both bottles are still great. Just having a Nalgene makes you better than people with HydroFlasks.
:)
Those darned HydroFlaskers and Voss bottlers. Unacceptable.
You make a great case! thanks for helping me make up my mind with your very entertainingly informative review vid!
Thank you for watching!
That conclusion at the end with grocery store water is awesome. It's like 2 people arguing wide or narrow then 3rd guy came in and slap them in the faces to bring them back to reality.
Oh yeah. I didn’t even realize water bottles could be such a debate but here we are.
Fun fact, the wide mouth can fit the wire wisk from a shaker bottle. Allowing you better mix protein shakes or pre workout, and better yet since its a wide mouth its way easier to clean afterwards.
Great tip! But, narrow mouth is better because it's better ;)
I prefer wide because I can put ice cubes in by the handful. The wide mouth IS more versatile if a situation needs for it, What ever that my be,.This video is kinda dumb. Wide mouth for me all day.
@@TheOutdoorsyDude wide gang > narrow gang
I have 3, 1x narrow mouth for summer use. And 2x wide mouths for winter in the Arctic, I use wide mouth with boiling water to act as a water bottle, and the other (glow in the dark version) as my pee bottle. You don't want to have to leave your tent/snow hole at -40celcius.
Don't drink from the wrong one lol 😂
Narrow mouth all day. Wide mouth was the origional and nalgene has now improved upon that design by making the far better to drink out of narrow mouth. Another thing for the narrow mouth when your in the woods near trees and pines with constant falling needles and bugs the entire opening of the narrow mouth bottle is covered by your mouth when drinking. Also when drinking on the move with bottle shaking ect water does not splash out the top of the narrow mouth again since your mouth covers the entire opening. NARROW ALL DAY
That’s my guy! Nobody else is talking sense - NARROW FOR DAYS!!
also, i am almost breaking my neck trying to drink the last bit of water out of the wide mouth while the opening hits against my nose.
I've been using narrow mouth Nalgene for years and I love them cause I usually hate sticking my sweaty lips on the bottle rim and it's a convenient way for me not to wash them regularly too. The dramatization of wide mouth is real cause I've done that with my hydroflask lmao
Here’s a person who knows what they’re talking about!!!
hehe ok I'll play. Ice cubes? Not everyone has a dishwasher? Or some ppl just prefer to be able to scrub something even if it's not technically required? Some folks do want to put things other than water (juice etc) that could leave more residue. And the wide mouth is compatible with the MSR filters. Also the capcap or OTF tops are very affordable. BUT they do add weight and bulk so if you only want to drink water and you have a dishwasher, then yeah that makes sense.
My ice cubes fit in the narrow :) and true not everybody has a dishwasher so fair enough. Remember the debate is about which is the best WATER bottle. I’ve done a dehydrated breakfast smoothie in a wide mouth before and I could taste it for the next month so I keep a dedicated other bottle for non-water things. Personally not a lover of the MSR pump filters. So much work! And yes I am just being cheeky at this point 😁
Love the effort put into the video! It was funny seeing you in the shower pouring the water out on yourself😂 definitely happens in real life
Glad you liked it!!
Been using a wide mouth Pathfinder canteen lately. Just got my hands on a lovely Nalgene Oasis canteen. I generally prefer stainless steel or titanium, but this Oasis canteen is already one of my favorites. As the Switzerland of this little debate, I say both bottle types have obvious benefits. The wide mouth canteen is easier to fill up and put ice in. Cleaning wide mouths is also much easier (an important point if it’s not dishwasher safe). Drinking from wide mouth canteens while moving is much more difficult. The narrow mouth Oasis canteen is definitely easier to drink from, especially when moving. The narrow mouths on the Oasis and other narrow mouth Nalgene bottles are not as narrow as those awful disposable plastic water bottles or the USGI canteens. This makes adding ice and pouring in water a bit easier. Though I lean slightly in favor of wide mouth canteens, I will always be Switzerland in this debate, as I have found both types to be serviceable. In the name of variation, to each their own. Good little video.
I'll have to check that out
Wide mouth is better. Period. They have sippy lids if you’re physically challenge and struggle drinking. Also mixing electrolytes in wide mouths is better. And pouring hot water in the wide mouth is awesome for winter sleeping and is easier than narrow.
If you wanna tease someone with the sippy lid call it sippy cup... 🫣 also narrow ftw.
literally the only reason i bought a wide mouth is its ability to fit ice in it easily so it can stay cold
But if you melt the ice first then it fits in the narrow mouth 🤷
I have both and prefer the wide mouth. You can literally cram that dude full of ice, plus I have a dinosaur msr pump filter that screws onto it. Nothing but lips attach to the narrow one.
Okay true. I’ve always gone with the gravity filters to save my arms thought.
I enjoy dumping ice into my Nalgene on a hot day. Good luck with that with your bottle. Just get the widemouth, with the narrow mouth lid, so you get the best of both worlds! 🤙
Yeah, but narrow is better tho ;)
So it comes down to personnel preference. The sensible thing to do is to get one of each. Or two of each, better get two of each.
Why not three?
@@TheOutdoorsyDude Three is a uneven number. I have 6 now. I found two on the trail, Some one threw them away.
Wide mouths are better for adding drink powders to your water, but narrow mouths definitely seem easier to drink from. What I did was buying a new cap that screws onto the wide mouth, but has a narrow mouth opening to drink from, giving you the best of both worlds
Ahhh another imposter
hey it works well lmao
I bought a 14oz widemouth one because I was going swimming and couldn’t find anything else to carry my keys in the open water except for those cheap vinyl pouches which was selling for 40$ and this was 12$ so I took this putted my keys in plus my small towel in and tied it too my swimming shorts and worked
Ok I have to admit it’s not the most practical thing we do normally but it worded and it saved the day
Probably will buy something more practical but meanwhile I can always use this and I like the bottle to drink water even if it was not it’s main purpose when I bought it
So for this reason alone I’m with widemouth bottle team
That sounds totally legit. I’ll admit this video needs an update…
I def prefer the narrow mouth cause it's easier to drink out of and I won't be spilling water in myself like I did with the wide mouth
Truth!!
Get bent Trent. Wide mouth all the way😤
Haha interesting debate lol, I'm torn still🤣
Narrow is superior 💪
Dear Sqwilliam, thank you for the enjoyable video. I have been having an internal debate on this subject for some time and am glad to find a kindred spirit. Your recreation of drinking from the wide mouth was a true reflection of a daily occurrence for me as a wide mouther. You have missed some of the key points in this important debate as some of the other commenters have pointed out
Happy to keep the debate going. Only thing I’ve heard so far is if you don’t have a dishwasher then fair enough. I’m still not swayed to the other side though... 🤪
I don’t have a dishwasher so it makes it harder to clean the narrow than the wide so i got the wide mouth. I would’ve gotten the narrow had it been a bit wider
Fair enough. Without the dishwasher I can get that.
Personally if we’re just talking water. Not even ice. Just as a water bottle, the only advantage I really see with the wide mouth is it’s easier to clean in a dishwasher.
Facts. You're a gentleman and a scholar.
good video
Thank you glad you enjoyed it
(Cap cap) takes care of this issue
Yeah, but narrow is better ;)
eww socks in my water bottle ? You convinced me to get a narrow, but im still hesitant on the concept as I like aluminum double walled. Iv got quite the thing for cold water.
Aluminum is goated. Wide mouthers are weird... 🤫
i like to have both.
i like the small mouth better for drinking water.
but i like to have the wide mouth too, because it looks cuter.
and in case i want to use it for anything else than water. like put a teabag in it or even something i want to eat with a spoon or pieces of fruit. have not tried that yet, but i have been thinking about it.
also, when i use it in daily life i pour water into it from a bottle. and i manage to pour into both kinds of opening fine.
You know what you are talking about!
@@TheOutdoorsyDude lol yeah! xD
Spilling water on yourself sucks but being able to clean the wide mouth with a brush makes it worth it
What are ya cleaning with a brush that can't be sanitized with hot soapy water?
@@TheOutdoorsyDude covid
Drinking from a wide mouth is like drinking from a cup or in my case.. pint glass
But narrow is better tho ;)
wide mouth is better because they come in so much more colours and glow in the dark! also just captures the eye.
My eye is best captured by narrow openings 😳
I drink out of the narrow mouth bottles and do everything else with the other one
What else is there to do? ;)
Wide mouth for the field & narrow mouth for the daily.
Hmmm interesting 🤔
Wide mouth all day. Easier to dip water from a shallow source in the wild, toss in some purifier tablets and I'm set.
Yeah, but narrow is better ;)
@@TheOutdoorsyDude yea but go for girth firth
Field washing machine with the wide mouth. Plus it’s easier to make a hot water bottle as my pot doesn’t have a pouring bit 😉 #justsayin
#wellyourewrong ;) (I'm just being cheeky)
narrow-mouth gang. let's go!!
LET"S GOOO!!!!!!!!! 💪
Ummm lock top aka the otf you get the benefits of both
But for $3 more... is it worth it?!
@@TheOutdoorsyDude I’d say so I mean $3 for something that lasts awhile sounds like a good deal to me
1. Ice. 2. Wide looks cooler. Drops mic......
Yeah, but narrow is better ;)
Have you heard of Cams Kicks? Dude, you and him could be brothers you look and speak so similarly.
Are they another RUclipsr?
Yes sir! Just search that name and meet your long long twin haha. Also this was a great video dude I’ve loved Nalgene forever and nice to finally start seeing some quality Nalgene content popping up on RUclips now.
For late spring / summer / early autumn use (when filtering is required), narrow mouth is better specially if using Sawyer/Miniwell/Lifestraw systems.
For late fall / winter / early spring use (when snow melting is required), wide mouth is better specially for pouring from pot. And no, most backpacking pots DON'T have spouts.
Fair point. I noticed looking at MEC that lots of pots don’t have spouts. Just a few it seems. Is there a reason why? It wouldn’t affect the pack-ability that much I don’t think.
i wanna sample this in a dnb song
Go for it 😂 send me the results
Wide mouth is better. You can put in ice cubes and they're easier to clean.
But if you melt the ice first then it fits in the narrow mouth 🫣
Biggest plus of the widemoth: easy to refill from a greek etc,
A peculiar people, the Greeks. Enigmatic. But apparently very hospitable and generous with fluids when presented with a wide mouth bottle.
@@patrickbateman312 Fuck, you got me.
If you buy the wide mouth sipper it do not spill
If you buy the narrow mouth you don't have to but the sipper 🤷 😉
Wide mouth is better because it's more durable and it has some extra uses like fitting my steripen. If you want a narrow mouth you can just use a smart water bottle instead.
Yeah, but narrow is better ;)
hydroflask keeps you water colder longer
I just bought one and it is great
Wide mouth is far superior because it is wide mouth and not narrow mouth
Sounds a little biased to me... and lacking in evidence... maybe?
very good reasons 🤣🤣🤣🤣
😆
This is no laughing matter ;)
LOOK AT GRAPH
*nice*
Good one eh?
Wide mouthers are so hipsters
Spitting truths 😎
About pouring I would also add,.
Can't you poor water on a bottle? You kiiiiiids?
Damn! Wide mouth gang being called out!
You can’t put ice in a narrow mouth.
If you melt it first you can ;)
Aboot time, ay?
Yeah eh had to settle this one for sure bud
