In some cases, for special finishes, I have used a top coat, but then put a thin coat of the special finish polish on top of that. That way I get the strength of the top coat, but still get the special finish.
Rachel Makrucki I’m not great at application so unless it’s extremely dark, I end up getting uneven results if I do just one coat. Two coats just feels necessary!
I’m 40 years old and just now understanding the importance of undertone when it comes to makeup, polish, and clothing. Thanks RUclips! I’m using what I’m learning to teach my daughter, so she doesn’t spend a lifetime picking wrong products the way I did.
The eye look! I've watched a ton of your videos but had to comment on this one. Your eye looks are always beautiful, but this one goes beyond - the word that comes to mind is ethereal. Just lovely and so so flattering.
I am a color geek (and teach color classes), and I love Love LOVE your color sense and the way you talk about color! I’ve commented on this before, but it’s worth doing again, because it’s truly exceptional. It really IS a trip to look at colors on their own and then in contrast to each other, right? It’s all about that context!
"If this was a fake i.d. Do you really think I would've made myself 7ft 5?" 😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard at that 😂 I hardly have any Grey polish but I just got a new one from Quixotic called 'Evening peace' (specifically to go under the 'Fusion' topper from that anniversary collection) & it. Is. EVERYTHING!! 😍 (I just tried to find a swatch pic on insta to send you but can't find one anywhere - so odd!) 💕
@@KelliMarissa I only tried them this year via PPU & I've fallen really hard for their polishes!! Great brand to try, I'm so clad I did (although my wallet isn't! 😂 My PPU addiction needs cutting off.. Eek!)
So is Iris Illusion, from the Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear collection (shiny lavender purplish color), one of my favorite colors. Also look for Get Mod (whitish nail polish), Street Flair (purplish nail polish), Mad Women (purplish, pinkish color), etc.... from the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel collection..
YAY! Your favorite nail polish series is my favorite thing that you do on RUclips! It was such a joy to see that you've posted a new one. Thank you very much! I'm obsessed with gunmetal grays like OPI's Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous. These grays might be a little too dark for this season, but I wear them anyway. :)
I know this video is from several years back, but I can relate so much to the brightly colored hair resulting in being carded. I’m 37 and I still get carded. Sigh. The height mishap is pretty crazy tho. :)
Love gray nail polishes too! A new (to me) favorite is Essie Press Pause. And an old favorite OPI Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees. Also, I love this series. I was so excited when it popped up on my feed.
Your eyes are perfect! I love how amazing you look in every video and I'd love to cop all your looks, but I'm too lazy to actually do it just for myself LOL thanks 4 letting me live vicariously thru ur color coordination
I only have two greys, one looks very similar to Astral Projection (cool slightly lavender undertone) and the other is social lights by Essie I recommend getting that if you find it! So beautiful can't tell what undertone it is because there's this dreamlike orange, pink, copper shimmer that appears at certain angles when it catches the light. Looove! If I had to, I'd add one more grey, a light grey cuckoo colour wind in my hair.
I love grey polishes! I was obsessed with them when I got into nail polish wayyyy back in 2008 or so, still am! Also love your coordinated makeup and outfit, gorgeous!
I also like Rub-a-Pub-Pub from OPI's Scotland collection. A slightly greenish darker grey, it's good on it's own, but also good as a base for holo top coats or iridescent top coats.
Not a gray fan, but I did want to have one in my collection. So thank you for the swatch! I actually like blue gray if that's a thing. Love your hair and eye shadow!
I love grey nail polish. I like taupe/greys the best and purple/greys. I love that Orly one you're wearing. My other favorite of yours is the Picture Polish one. Very pretty.
I am always impressed at your ability to see subtleties in color. I don't know the difference between warm and cool tones; not even sure what that means. 😏 I know it is a thing and appreciate the ability to see it. Your shadow is on point and I'm loving the hair, too! As for gray polishes, I have several. Not my top choice generally but there are times nothing else will do! Thanks for the vid, Kelli!😊
Hi Kelli, I appreciate hearing your little discussion of undertones. We are so lucky to live in a time where all the nail polish colors offered are available in various kinds of undertones, whether they are warm, neutral, or cool. I often have difficult deciding, "Does this undertone actually look good on me, or do I just like the color?" Then a makeup specialist at my salon informed me that I actually have a neutral undertone to my skin, lucky me! All shades look good, so I can simply go with what I prefer instead of being limited to one or the other undertone.
Great breakdown. I also love Zoya August and Picture Polish London. I can’t wait to try PP Shark. IIRC, my first grey was OPI Spare Me A French Quarter. I still have the bottle, years later. Thanks again!
I have the Orly polish and it is really pretty. But these all looked nice. Can't wait for your next "favorites". I've seen them them all and appreciate your hard work. ❤😽
My favourite greys are London from Picture Polish which is a light grey polish with holographic pieces in it and Foggy from F.U.N lacquer with is a slightly darker grey with little holo glitters and a pink shimmer.
Masura has some really awesome grey polishes, which holographic glitter or shimmer but also one with multichrome flakies! I also love all your picks in this video, grey is also one of my favotite colors to wear on my nails
I'm really soft for greys, loved this video! I really love OPI Skull & Glossbones, it's a LE from years ago (one of the Pirates of the Caribbean collections). It's got a very slight green undertone and it's super flattering. It just reminds me of newspaper for some reason haha
I love your faves videos! I’m so glad you switched over to RUclips, your swatch and reviews are so good. I also appreciate you always making an effort to show up with a smile. Take care Kellie!
Over The Edge from Essie, I think it's from their Serene Slate collection is my number 1 gray nail polish, it's a slightly metallic almost black polish
I love your eye make up with this hair color. The other day when you had the green and yellow eye make up on with the blue hair it was too many colors, this is perfection
I have a few that I really like, you covered several of my favs though, already. Most of these have things added. Zoya- "London", Zoya-"Genevieve", Zoya- "Yuna". Picture Polish- "London", Essie "Serene Slate", and Orly QUO-"Interstellar"
Thank you so much for this video!! I think the Orly one that you're wearing and the OPI I can never hut up are my faves :)) I have a question, when you make these videos, do you write down notes or similar for each nail polish that you show so you have a reminder of everything you wanna say or do you just improvise? Cause you say so much and you're so detailed, I love it :D
Haha that is a good question! The favorites videos are the only ones I take notes for (while swatching) because the polishes tend to be really similar and I want to make sure I remember the differences lol.
Grey is such a tricky colour, the struggle is on the same level as trying to find that perfect pale pink! Really curious to hear your recommendations x
Oh! Found it! Ah, I love gray. Gonna get comfy and see if I spot any good ones to buy. I’m getting tired of wearing black. What about favorite nude colors ?
China Glaze "Recycle" is lovely if you want to add a medium warm grey creme to your stash. But, it's an oldie but goodie from about a decade ago. So, it has the old school thin round brush.
I think I own that dark grey ORLY Shade you swatched in your video , love dark greys my skin tone is very olive . Have you tried Mirror Mirror by them ? Was curious how it might go with my skin tone since I feel a lot of heather greys don’t pair well , but love the shade . Also just purchased on sale this Drug store brand called Defy&Insire and the shade Mom the Manager . Dior polish le Vernis shade 12 A.M. , Essie - ON MUTE, Now and Zen 999 . P.O.P. - Gargoyle, Black Dahlia Vegan Laquer- Doce Grey both look cool . Deborah Lippmann Stormy Weather , Butter London -Earl Grey , Marc Jacobs - Confession , X formula - Grey Matter. ,Smith&Cult -Stockholm Sydrome on my list to buy since I got a manicure in this shade and loved it . I know their are more polishes and shades of grey I love but this is a few off the top . Love all you nail swatch videos and have learned a lot of tricks and tips from you Kelli . Thanks keep making nail art videos .
Zoya dove is a classic !!! Definitely was hoping you’d mention that one 😉 That last OPI polish ( nein nein nein, okay fine) would look awesome with OPI (I never hut up) polka dots on top
I love gray nail polishes and have a boat-load of them. My personal faves are the whole Olive and June April Showers collection (all of them are awesome) and Morgan Taylor Who Dini. Have you tried the Olive and June polishes? I have not seen you review them, you would like the formulas I am sure of it!
Honestly I only tried one collection from that brand but I wasn't a huge fan! And I did an honest review of them and the brand owner flipped out at me and messaged a ton of my followers who agreed, telling them they don't know how to use nail polish :( it really soured my opinion of the brand.
Those are some great greys! I really love the Loud Lacquer color, it does remind me of some of the old school hard candy and urban decay polishes I coveted in my youth. Also yes to everything you said about Orly. Gotta be one of my favorite brands and they just dont get the coverage and love I think they deserve from the nail art youtube community. Love the new hair Kelli, keep up the great work you do!
Thank you for giving gray polish some love! Thought I was the only one who liked them! Should people with cool toned skin stick to cool toned grays, or does it matter? Also have you tried Essie Gel Couture in Closing Night? It looks so pretty and I'd love to see a swatch 🖤
Hey Alison! I think to start out, you might be more comfortable with the cooler toned shades - and you might find that the warmer grays look more taupe/beige on you - but it’s definitely worth experimenting with different undertones and seeing what you like best!
Falcon and Dove are both full on beige on my nails, and not a nice beige. But thanks for splitting the undertones! I know no warm and most neutrals are not wearable.
@@KelliMarissa Ooh! I think you're totally right! I did see a few in your collection I might need 😍 I know you're doing silver separately, but my first OPI color I ever bought was How To Jamaica Million
First of all i want to thank you for really helpful videos. Second, i love your makeup and hair today! And about greys. I didnt see your opinion on Orly Breathable series, i am in love with grey Moon Rise. It is totally one coater and such creamy nice grey base

Haha I feel naked without it!
Rachel Makrucki no matter what! There will always be a second coat.
I always do three because my nails are super thin and I want to make sure they don’t break lol

I have been watching you a lot recently. I just heard you say you lived in NJ ... me too!! So exciting (lol it doesn’t take much to amuse me).
Haha! I love finding other NJ people!!
Dark gray is so beautiful
Omg I love the eye look and the hair!!! ⚪️💙
Oh thank you so much!!
My favorite grays are OPI Cement the Deal and Femme Fatale The First Northern Witch
Ooh gorgeous picks!
I have a whole butt ton of new polishes coming and while I’m waiting on them, I’ve been binging your swatch videos lol
Falcon and Dove are both full on beige on my nails, and not a nice beige. But thanks for splitting the undertones! I know no warm and most neutrals are not wearable.
I figured those would lean more beige on cooler skintones!
I. Love. Gray. Nail polish! I don't know why, but they are just awesome!
Me tooooo!! They're just a soft neutral but interesting enough to not feel like a natural color haha
I'm so glad you enjoy these, Tatiana! I've actually never used their Breathable line, but I love their regular line so I should check it out!
This video has convinced me that I need more grey polishes in my life.
You can never have too many!
Love the grey China Glaze recycle
Oh yes a classic!
