  • Here is the oldest (1974) video we know of: • Ram Dass - Here and No...
With the recent passing of Baba Ram Dass (aka Dr. Richard Albert), we are excited to honor his memory with this lecture we just found in our vast video archive. Like so many in our generation, we were deeply inspired by his book BE HERE NOW and the stories of meditating in India with his guru, Maharaj-ji.
We first heard Ram Dass speak in Woodstock, NY where we lived at the time. Then in 1976, we videotaped this lecture while working with Grassroots TV, the Aspen public access television group. Ram Dass is also the reason we started our music label, Soundings of the Planet, in 1979. More on that story later. For now, let’s remember this amazing human, Baba Ram Dass. His wit and wisdom lives on in our hearts. We hope you enjoy watching and please comment on your experience with him and his prolific life's work. May we carry his spiritual legacy in our hearts. Thank you for sharing this video far and wide.

It delights me that in many (most?) of Ram Dass satsangs there is a baby. Most of them will be in their 40s now and I wonder if the parents told them about the time they brought them as infants/toddlers to see him.
I avoided him when he came to Berkeley where I was an undergrad - I tired of hippies and despised new age movements but it was my loss.
Had I known then what I know now - how much easier my life would have been.
Shaking off that regret is the last hurdle.

And, I really get what a tough journey he was on. At around 19:00 Ram Dass says anyone should leave whenever they’ve had enough - you know when you’ve had enough - it just keeps coming, there is no “in conclusion” here, it’s just a constant flow…. This is so perfect. I always subconsciously come to these seeking that point, that aha. But that’s not what it’s about. It’s a stream and each person takes what they need. No pressure on the speaker to meet the needs of the viewer. Beautiful and true.

I was blessed to have time with Ram Dass at a retreat and some of his talks in '75 and '76 in Gainesville, Fl. Still have some photos I took of him. His amazing book "Be Here Now" was 1 of the 1st spiritual books I read. Good times.

I love this dude and he is definitely one of the few that has helped me along my way. It's interesting because he has incredible wisdom and really work to develop that because he is so often an extreme narcissist and everything is me me me I I I . . . Most of us are that way but this guy was extremely all about himself which, in the end, was really good because he put in the time and the work and came from a place as egocentric and challenged as the rest of us. I think that's part of what makes him so beautiful and accessible to so many.

Thank you. I learned a few things about myself here. I had a mystical experience while I was going to AA meetings because of my forgiving this woman in AA whom I thought was not so nice. The Buddhists would call it nirvana, the christians would call it being washed in the blood and there was a few other things that came with it but I didn't know what it was at the time all I knew that it was just "sobriety" because that's the only reference I had for it but I knew it was way more than that. I'm currently studying A Course In Miracles because everything is all gone now and I'm like Ram Dass was, "a crooked egocentric" that wishes no harm to people. I have found a little forgiveness and mercy for myself as the result of watching and listening to this video. Thank you. 🙏🙏

Certainly more interesting than the speech he gave at the end of dinner one night at the 2000 Rainbow Gathering in Montana. They announce "Ram Dass is here!" Everyone cheers, we wait to hear him speak.... *"There's a lot of good pot here," he says. Several in the crowd make sounds of agreement, as we await his words. *"Let's smoke some of it,"* he said, and that was the end of the speech. I must say I was rather disappointed. But hey, he'd had a stroke, so I mainly chalked it up to that.
