Is CHINA really what you think? Join me on my first day exploring Shanghai to find out the truth. Given the news headlines about government surveillance and tension with other countries, I was nervous about visiting China. However, I wanted to experience the real China for myself beyond the media narratives. So I flew to Shanghai with an open mind. And what I discovered surprised me.
I went to China on a 144-hour transit visa, which I will talk about in detail in my video. I found Shanghai an advanced, green city with kind people, tasty food, and awesome infrastructure like the maglev bullet train. While there are certainly political issues in China worth discussing, on a human level most locals I met were welcoming and simply living normal lives - working hard and enjoying time with family and friends.
Overall, Shanghai felt safe, convenient and modern with cutting-edge technology everywhere. From mobile payments to ubiquitous electric vehicles, China seems ahead of much of the world in innovation. Yes, personal freedoms and certain websites/apps are restricted in China relative to Western countries. But Shanghai hardly felt oppressed given the vibrant street life and economic prosperity on display.
This video takes you along on my eye-opening first day in Shanghai. See the maglev train, famous skyline views, street markets and more while I share honest impressions about daily life and Chinese culture. China surprised me - and it may surprise you too!

Hong Kong is not a country, Hong Kong is a city in China. I am a Hong Konger

  • @ArthurJason-Constantine

Just because purposeful politicians and media tell you not to like this country, you just follow their ideas. In my opinion, this is not a basic democratic literacy. I have always told myself that if I want to know a country, I must go to see it, so I decided to buy a plane ticket to China in the next spring. It happens that China has implemented a visa-free policy for my country, and I am very happy.

I'm Taiwanese. Taiwanese are Chinese too. The westerners have been trying hard to separate Taiwan from our China our motherland, Their plan will not secceed.

  • @GOAT_MESSI53

Only if you go to China in person will you realize how hateful the western media is, the security, the architecture, the food, the convenience, the subway, the technology, etc. Only if you have been to China will you realize how amazing the development of China is. I hope you will have a wonderful journey in China😊😊

We visited 6 cities in China in October 2023. I was amazed at how much China has progressed and developed since our previous visit in 2011. We are already planning our next visit for 2024. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from Australia.

  • @FengXiao168

Friendly remind you that Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan are NOT countries! These regions are special regions maintaining their status before handover (although Taiwan is not united yet), i.e. mainland Chinese or people from these regions going to mainland require "special pass"...

  • @happyman5476

Most people learn China from western media and most of them are biased against China. Glad that you visit China and see China for yourself. By the way, the architecture at Wai-Tan was influenced by the West because China was invaded by foreign allied forces in the late 19th century and some of them had concessions in Shanghai (GB, France, USA and Japan). Enjoy your holiday in Shanghai. ~ From Malaysia.

Welcome to the greatest country on earth

I give a thumb up for the video cover that Jack put Taiwan inside China map.

Hi, I'm leaving in Singapore and we just came back from China a week ago. Went to Hang Zhou and Shanghai. As you said, I was nervous too! Didn't know what to expect although I went 16years ago. We watched many RUclips videos just to prepare this trip. China changes so much within the two decades. It really blown my mind. Its so clean. Yes so impressed with the train! Will go again to other cities next year.

The Maglev travelled at 431km/h fore very journey when I was there in Shanghai more than 10 years ago. Now it has been reduced to about 300km/h so that it reduces wear and tear and to be more energy efficient. I think only 2 time slots it travels at 431km/h. The Fuxing series bullet train travels faster than that at 350km/h, which is max speed for now in the world. I recommend destinations such as provinces Yunnan and Xinjiang for most diverse and beautiful landscapes, most diverse ethnicities and ancient architectures.

thanks for showing the world what real china is, lived in shanghai for 7 years, had the best time in my life.

  • @nikkamuir

This is a traveller who has done his deep research before heading to China. I mean we all know that China has its own world and they literally operate using their own apps. So kudos to you for preparing well to fully enjoy your stay in China. I have watched so many vlogs about their 144 hour stay in China and they act like they didn't know about these known facts. As much as I appreciate them coming to China , I just feel like they could have enjoyed more if they have prepared themselves just like how you prepared yourself prior to your trip. It doesn't cost you too much of your time to research the country you are going in and preparing yourself. If you are coming to China, please do what this guy did! Amazing vlog. Very informative too. !

I was in Shanghai twenty five years ago. I was lucky to have my coffee choose best coffee at the international coffee show in Shanghai. Great video Pete, always enjoy them. Glad to see your channel growing. Any one that judges you on the country you visit you don't want as subscribers mate.

  • @rajeshkumarlimbu9886

china is most welcoming country and where you can not find racism

  • @binhe6500

when you crossed the river to the "other side" that was actually the older part of Shanghai called the Bund. Those western architectures were built when parts of Shanghai were small colonies called "concessions". The Chinese people are acutely aware of the history and what happened to the country when it was weak. It has come a long way. That's what made the western media uncomfortable.

  • @aaabbb4843

You did the right thing , You went see china by your self . Not according to Western media speaking . Good luck for you and enjoy your trip .
