It’s not just girlfriends, they have people who pretend to be parents and siblings too. This is just a small extension to that. The real problem, People in Japan are lonely. Increasing number of people are living alone and don’t have real friends, are not in a relationship. It’s not just dorky guys either. Women in Japan are not desirable after 25, so it’s harder for them to find a steady relationship as they get older. Draconian work culture still thinks women should be the one caring for children. If they want to remain employed, they feel like they can’t have children. Elderly people are also alone. Even in a city as densely populated as Tokyo, many Japanese are alone.

I have two jobs and I was lucky to find my husband when I was still a student but not everyone do. It is a very sad reality of this beautiful country.

I'm pretty sure that they have multiple verification steps because if you only need your picture to commit identity theft, then the establishment is sloppy.
My bank required me to bring multiple things to get verified and not just my picture. I also live in a rural area in the Philippines.
