“Every diy project is much simpler when you have the right tool for the job.” Forget the tools, can you send your dad out to California? 😊. Mom & Dad. You are blessed.
You are so lucky to have such a talented father. You are learning a lot from him, and maybe one day you'll be able to pass it down. That kind of skill is priceless. Your eye for art is some thing I'm learning a lot about and the way you are decorating your furniture and walls with art incorporated into them is some thing I don't think I've ever seen before. I wish I could produce something Artistic also but drawing is not some thing I am talented with. This is a wonderful channel thank you.
Andrew just a comment to help your algorithm. BOTH ARE a dramatic difference. One thing I have noticed is that bedrooms are basically a series of boxes, much like an Amazon warehouse. Beds are a box, dressers are a box, etc. The easiest way for me to introduce variety to these forms is to use beside tables that are round, oval, or even half moon. I did this almost by accident and really like the look, and am surprised how much added interest this adds. Another plus is that you don't have to worry about scraping yourself on the corners in the middle of the night. I admire your design restraint on both of these, but just seems like too much work to do the drawer insides when almost nobody will ever see that and not all three drawers are ever open all at once. Also prefer beside tables that are similar but do not match exactly. Great work.
I love that your parents are working with you. Your dad does great work! And can I say I love the living room rug… the nightstand is amazing it’s rich and warm and the legs are just the right shape and size. The small dresser looks brand new and of course the artistic touches make them very personal to you. Very nice work Sometimes I wish we could send a picture of a piece we’re working on and get advice and suggestions from people like you with design tips….
Both pieces much improved with your artistic touch! If you haven't tried this before, an inexpensive recipe to blacken wood is, dissolve a steel wool pad ( no soapy sos) in a quart of white vinegar. Give it about 1week to get nice and rusty looking. Then using a sponge brush or disposable chip brush, paint evenly onto raw wood. This reacts with the natural tannins in the wood, so depending on species you'll get different shades of black. Pine turns a nice dark Tudor brown and oak looks like it's been charred black. Thanks again for the lovely and oh so creative content 😻
Both great {as usual} with magical 'Reissued touch' . 'Sculptural piece' my favorite because of style/color. Escher drawers of yellow one so unique. Never guess you didn't spend a ton. Some of my favorite things cost little/nothing. It's amazing what can be found. Certain things we bought new, such as quality wool rugs. However my most valuable rug was absolutely free, a huge, very old antique Persian rug someone put on the curb. I love to shop the curb. When I had the rug cleaned the rug people tried to buy it from me! Love when Queenie makes her appearance❤
Exactly the right touch! That campaign chest is gorgeous - those aren't cheap, either, so you scored! And the other table is so unique. I absolutely love them both. I know you're keeping them, but I think flippers would do well to think along these lines sometimes. Lilac milk paint with distressed edges 😸ain't always it.
The painted sides of the tables are my favorite part. And yes to the color of the second dresser, if it was black then it would look so ordinary and like something you could pick up anywhere. Keep the color as it is would be my suggestion.
LOVE your esthetic! LOVE that you share the twists and turns of the design process out loud! LOVE your video production quality! LOVE your thoughts on when/how to flip or keep your pieces! LOVE the addition of your artistic talent to each piece taking them to another level! LOVE that your family support is prominently featured! LOVE that you have a passion for upcycling! LOVE that you have an appreciation for the beauty of furniture styles from eras gone by! LOVE that you decided to start a channel AND LOVE that I found it!!
When ppl paint a beautiful piece I think about all the times someone strips the paint off to reveal a beautiful piece! I think it’s warranted in some cases but overall I’m for the original look. At the same time ppl saving furniture and making a living also has merit. I guess I try to say to myself, that’s none of my business! But I like what you did here and you are very thoughtful with your designs.
What a surprise for those who would pull out the drawers! Theyre so cool that I'd have to leave them open all the time for everyone to see and appreciate!!!
I love all those touches of Escher in your home. He's one of my favorite artists. Great job on these furniture pieces! Wiping the finish down with a wet cloth really improved the final result. I wouldn't want to spray it all black. I have mixed feelings about transforming an antique piece. If it's something a family member made 50 or more years ago, or a thrifted piece in decent shape, I wouldn't change it (unless it needs re-staining or repair work). A piece in bad shape headed for the landfill? I think you can do whatever you want with it such as, restore it to its original antique style or repurpose it a whole new way. Just my opinion.
The issue "make it for keeping or for selling" is not just "you". I always feel to be much more critical about my work when I plan to give it away, too.
I like both pieces redone. The nightstand I would leave the brown color and you could wax the front and sides. I have used Howard’s Feed & Wax on furniture and vintage wood frames i purchased. An antique dealer told me to liberally apply the wax, let it set then rub gown with 0000 steal wool. Comes out to a low luster and very smooth. Enjoy your channel!!😊
Hey now don't you have just the perfect exquisite understated taste. Here you are miles above all those furniture flippers with just a couple of quick dabbles and on to other projects.🩷
First, your dedication to detail is amazing. That you have your Dad to guide you through the restoration/ rebuild/ modification is a boon. Your folks are great! As for the pieces, I think the darker piece would benefit with some wax on the sides. It doesn't have to be glossy like the top. Rather, try a more subtle wax. It's good for the wood and it'll enhance the paint you added. The lighter color piece is very well done. Applause for keeping the hardware on both. It's not only more economical but it has a uniqueness that adds to the overall vintage feel. Great selections! Fantastic restorations. As for salvaging old pieces, all your points are square on.
Wax...YES. try a dark tinted wax. The dresser might benefit with some rub-n-buff on the hardware to give it some "zip". For a VERY low cost rub-n-buff hack, just use a small tube of gold craft paint for 50 cents, or whatever....I did that to some hardware I ordered online that did not quite match each other...stippled it on with a paper towel, and it was a success. As far as flipping/painting furniture goes, just do it if you want. 99.999999% of thrifted furniture is not museum quality, so it's all good. You know you are on the right track, so looking forward to the next videos. One more thing.....a piece of glass cut for a piece that size should not be more than 25-35$ at the most. Or, get a glass cutter and thrift a piece of glass and cut it yourself 😊
ive just been binging your videos. your younger eye has quite a seasoned recognition. smart. your parents are a surprise hit too. the family that renovates together..... great work. im also curious about your choreography/dance work. so much of the timely arts are not allowed to be filmed, but would like to see a snippet. your energy is inspiring.
I think they both came out looking really nice. Drawer side treatments are clever, too. Consider a satin finish for the black piece to complement the shiny top - perhaps wax? Even if you did nothing else, you should be proud of your work. Side note: I have warm memories of my parents helping me built my house 35 years ago. I could never have done the electrical without my dad, and my mom didn’t know much but her willingness to be there was endearing. She said her talent was holding things….. Looks like you have a couple of gems with you on your adventure! (My parents are both gone now, and I am so glad I had that experience with them.)
Lovely ‘after’ makeover pictures 😊 The bedside? Perhaps just make those architectural drawers pop by adding gilding wax to the edges (ie above and below each handle). Nothing too ‘out there’ but enough to give it the chance to have its moment. Well done! ❤️
Very wise choice to keep the campaign chest of drawers close to its original colors. It looks great in your space too. The design on the sides of the drawers is a nice surprise. When refinishing wood, it's typically best to follow directions as they are written from experience. You turned it around to work though. Great job.
Both of your reissued furniture pieces came out great! I look forward for your videos because of your amazing creativity as well as your editing skills and choice of music. Hoping for more subscribers soon!
3 Drawer flip-painted almond looks fabulous!! Don't know about bedside-looked better than I thought it would and certainly better than it did before your flip ...but.
I like both pieces very much. You have improved and updated each in unique ways. If I was doing the project I however would move the legs on the nightstand further to the edges. As they are presently, they don't work with the bottom (heavy) front skirt. Fix those two front legs, and your proportion will all work together in a harmonious way.
Very beautiful reissues of both drawers/nightstands. The peekaboo artwork is done really professionally. I think you can do a video on how you to paint/trace with different mediums. Tracing/following a pattern is no joke on unconventional surfaces. I find it endearing how you stretch out your left arm and say "ok..." Every time you start a chapter/new segment.
The drawer sides are just such a fun touch of whimsey, I love them! You and Ariel Bissett (have you seen her channel? Canadian book RUclipsr who is remodeling an old farmhouse she bought during the pandemic) are my comfort watches for house-related stuff. You have such similar bravery in design, but very different styles.
You got some artistic skills! Love the idea of the drawer sides having art on them. It's a fun way to get a peak of something interesting when the drawers are open. I think that the nightstand turned out beautifully and I wouldn't change a thing about it.
I love the night stand. It's beautiful. I think it looks better like this than being all black. And your patience for hand painting the side is impressive. I'd have just glue a piece of wall papper on them and call it a day. LOL.
wow you never cease to amaze and inspire. thanks for re-introducing MC Escher into my life. been wanting more geometric art in my space. For the flips, i like both. the first just looks like the new version of what it was, clean and elevated. The second one looks very cool to me, do the legs look a little off in proportion tho? also, i'm here for the serious design questions kitchen series lol everything in balance. so long as you are intentional with why you're doing something and whether you need it at all, i say flip how you want but yea social media has a way of amplifying and amping up production for the sake of what's trending for content.
Thanks for weighing in! I tend to agree about the proportions of the legs - I was so focused on the finish that I think I got the leg placement wrong 😭
Beautiful! Really appreciate your process and agree that not every makeover needs to be a 180. The hand painted details were outstanding! I’m itching to try the technique. Love your music choices as well. 👍
As a kid, I had a campaign dresser and desk with the same yellow drawers. The tops were covered in a plastic laminate. After college, I cut off the desk portion and used the drawer side section as a nightstand. I probably kept those things until I was close to 30 years old.
Hi Andrew love these pieces the finished product is amazing I need you at my home 🤣 your mum and dad are amazing you are blessed can’t wait for next video I wish you were on every day ❤Australia xx
Love the finish, the tone coming through gives the black a warm feeling, perfect with the hardware. Adding the legs gave it a lightness to the look of the piece. Your very talented Andrew.
Two great unique designs! You shared the normal ups and downs of learning new skills, using new materials, and questioning decisions. The only change I suggest is having the legs of the nightstand sit wider so they are more flush with the sides of the piece. I really enjoyed and appreciated this video.
I tried them flush with the sides and they looked too wide… but I absolutely agree that they would have been better a bit wider 😭 I’m gonna leave them for now and might adjust the base again down the line 👍🏻
Just like you, I use a vintage Singer sewing machine cabinet (with machine inside) as one of my night stands. Yours is wider than mine, which is beautiful, but I love mine anyway.
It’s all GOOOOD! Love ‘em both. Night stand would be tragic in all black. It looks like the aftermath of a fire, so it’s great. Haha. It’s soft and black is too hard. ❤❤
I love both pieces. I think they look so much better than they did before. Not to mention the hidden artwork on the drawers. I’m not a fan of painting “antique” or “vintage” pieces just cuz. I have a small enameled-topped ice box, (not oak), that was probably stripped of its original milk paint. After 25 years of moving all over the country with it, I’m entertaining the idea of putting the milk paint finish back on. I’ve stripped enough bad finishes off of great pieces to really think about painting furniture 😅.
I think both turned out perfectly! The nightstand not being solid black highlights the drawer fronts with the juxtaposition of the shiny top and that ivory is perfect for an upgrade on the chest. I'd be proud to house either piece.
First of all, I would never give you a 'straight' opinion. I would, however, give you an Old Jaded Queen's commentary. LOL Love the campaign chest...well played. The smaller side table/nightstand...mmm...not the biggest fan of the finish. (But I'm not the one who has to live with it) IMHO I've had issues with older finish removals to update/refresh a furniture piece as well. Sometimes using lacquer thinner applied with steel wool or a Scotchbrite pad and stripping gloves works wonders on old finishes. (sometimes) You've got a great hand in rendering your expressions. And M.C. Escher's work has always been thought provoking to me too. Cheers Andrew.
I liked them both. Not sure how I feel about the legs for the nightstand. So nice that your mom and dad are there to help and support your projects. 💖💖🎶🎶
The campaign dresser looks great. The nightstand looks cool but I think the legs need to be a bit chunkier. Love love love the art on the sides of the drawers. You are very talented! Anyway, I’ve been watching a couple of furniture flipping channels on YT. Transcend Furniture Gallery and Katie Scott which may be helpful if you are thinking of a move in that direction. The girl on Transcend is also an artist and does some amazing work.
I have been watching what you are doing and I am so impressed with your process… painting furniture has been around forever. I worked with my Dad in the ‘80’s when he had his cabinet business and we did some crazy things for sure … I agree with your sentiment… if it needs to fit in your space make it fit… Love your channel, can’t wait to see what’s next and your pup is a cutie for sure!!!
They both look great. I think the finish is fine on the the two drawer piece, because the IKEA legs give it a strong contemporary silhouette, so the finish, although it looks very good, is less important to the final effect. Love the finished artwork on drawer sides too. You’re great.
The campaign chest looks like an elevated and refined version of its former self. Very nice. Something feels off balance on the other piece... maybe the legs need a wider stance? They might look cool if they were flush to outer corners. As always, love your content. Keep it comin'.
Hey Andrew! Great job on both as usual...campaign chest looks revived and happy. The smaller chest is tricky----I don't think the plain brown does its beautiful drawer lines justice. Maybe do a gold "wash" on the drawers to give them a bit of a lift, start light and build up as needed. A shine to draw the eye to the drawer curves.... I also agree with others that the front legs should be wider. Love that original hardware on the drawers!!!! Love the videos, keep up the great work!
Both turned out beautiful. I think the finish on the nightstand is great. My only suggestion would be that the legs be moved out toward the outside of the piece rather that tucked under. Front to back on that seems fine but side to side them seem like they need to go out further. Amazing work on the drawer sides on both!
Your work/ideas/visions are always amazing! You are one of the most talented people I know and an artist en pointe! ✨ But what also needs to be said: You have the cutest smile _ever!_ 😄❤ Regarding your question about flipping: I think it also depends on what era and thus material/finish and shape/design the piece is from. A shiny varnish or laminate coated Art Déco or 50s piece can handle some colourful, "artificial" pop way better than a real wooden antique (for example Art Noveau) or mid century piece, imo. 😊
“Every diy project is much simpler when you have the right tool for the job.” Forget the tools, can you send your dad out to California? 😊. Mom & Dad. You are blessed.

You are insanely talented! ❤

Wax...YES. try a dark tinted wax.

i especially love how you placed the perfect lamp on top of the 2 drawer cabinet- the cabinet & the lamp are both faceted! you're amazing.
Breathtaking
I think they both look great.
I think both turned out perfectly! The nightstand not being solid black highlights the drawer fronts with the juxtaposition of the shiny top and that ivory is perfect for an upgrade on the chest. I'd be proud to house either piece.
Aw thank you so much!
Thanks for the tips! I’m doing everything I can to avoid stripper these days… but maybe lacquer thinner would be a nice tool for the tool belt.
I love the Escher drawers. Jury's still out on the nightstand.
You (and your family) are incredibly talented! Beautiful work always!
Thank you so much!
Love love love, you nailed it with the finishes and the side draw designs are gorgeous. You're so God damned talented with your freehand painting ❤
Aw thanks Amanda!
How that horrifying liner paper was truly the stuff of nightmares. Great job on the flips and on your home!
Love the nightstand, almost more than the set of drawers.
I do like the finish on the nightstand. The art that you painted on the drawer sides is so beautiful that it is a shame that you can’t see it.
Aw thanks! Yeah I wish you could see it a bit more, but it a fun little Easter egg haha
I liked them both. Not sure how I feel about the legs for the nightstand. So nice that your mom and dad are there to help and support your projects. 💖💖🎶🎶
They are amazing! Do you think a wider placement would be better for the nightstand legs?
That nightstand is gorgeous the way you did it. Good job!!! I love it....
I really love how both turned out! What a very interesting touch to add art to the sides of the drawers. Such talent! ❤
18:09 Love it!
Night stand or locker as we Irish call them is looking very good. Love your side drawer painting , you are soo talented with great parents ❤
Thanks Dolores!
Excellent job on both pieces. They look lovely.
Thanks Giuliana! So glad you’re enjoying my channel! ❤️
Beautiful work😍😍😍
They both look great. I think the finish is fine on the the two drawer piece, because the IKEA legs give it a strong contemporary silhouette, so the finish, although it looks very good, is less important to the final effect. Love the finished artwork on drawer sides too. You’re great.
Very interesting take on this! Thank you so much for sharing!
L❤ve the nightstand finish!
Great you like it! It’s grown on me 🙌🏻
The campaign chest looks like an elevated and refined version of its former self.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Whoa this channel is so underrated. What a cool idea!! The designs you chose are perfect. And that enamel top is so good
Both turned out beautiful. I think the finish on the nightstand is great. My only suggestion would be that the legs be moved out toward the outside of the piece rather that tucked under. Front to back on that seems fine but side to side them seem like they need to go out further. Amazing work on the drawer sides on both!
I like the nightstand. It turned out appearing that it was original. Like the “ look.”
Love both!
I like the finish you went with. Both pieces look good.
Thanks Linda!
Love the campaign dresser and esp sides. Like the other piece as well. Don’t paint!great job you two! Yay dad
They both look great
I love the way you have redone pieces that may have never been used.
Your work/ideas/visions are always amazing!
You are one of the most talented people I know and an artist en pointe!
✨
But what also needs to be said:
You have the cutest smile _ever!_
😄❤
Regarding your question about flipping:
I think it also depends on what era and thus material/finish and shape/design the piece is from.
A shiny varnish or laminate coated Art Déco or 50s piece can handle some colourful, "artificial" pop way better than a real wooden antique (for example Art Noveau) or mid century piece, imo.
😊
Thank you! I appreciate your thoughts!
they both look amazing ! they are understated, clean and original now. you did such a great job on the paintings !
Nice!!!
I think they look amazing.
Thank you so much!
Both pieces are great
