  • My kitchen makeover is done! And I hear it might be "out of style." Let's talk about it...
    When I purchased my 1930s house in 2021, the kitchen was the first room we started tackling... and it took nearly TWO YEARS to get all the details finished. During that time, styles have shifted... so how did my design choices stand the test of time in 2023?
    So much work went into this kitchen and I LOVE how it turned out! Let me. know what you think!

    Beadboard, butcher block, subway tile, black and white checkered flooring...are all hallmarks of early kitchens and are spot-on appropriate for the age of your house. They may go "out of fashion" for the trendy modern kitchen, but those age-old materials will always be suitable for an older home. You did a Fabulous job (and I don't use the F word lightly). You took timeless finishes and managed to update them and make it all look fresh and contemporary. Well done.

    Speaking as an interior designer, the trouble with people's perception about style is that they believe it's something you attain through mood boards, pintrest, and trade magazines. People have sort of gotten to believe that achieving a certain style is the end goal when designing a space. It is not.
    Interior designers focus less on style and more on space planning. If you're worried about style and chasing trends, you're really on a dream to nothing that will require you to redesign your space about every 7 to 10 years and end up being really unsustainable. What creates a good kitchen is its functionality. This, above all else, is what makes for a really good space. The aesthetic is just cake decorations. Also, what makes you think butcher block isn't durable? It's actually one of the most durable kitchen surfaces we have. Butcher block can last 50 years, be refinished, and last another 50 years. It also requires less maintenance than other kitchen surfaces.
    I think another problem is that people have lost track of the difference between designers and decorators. People whose focus is style are really decorators. What's the difference? The difference is that interior design is an art, and you need BFA. Decorating is a craft, and there are no educational requirements to call yourself a decorator.

    • @REISSUED
      @REISSUED  Год назад +30

      Love this perspective! Thank you for weighing in. Absolutely agree about the importance of space planning and functionality. Regarding the durability of butcher block, my parents used to have it around their sink and had some issues with water discoloration. Mine already have some wear from things falling on them and the finish wearing off (although this has been much better since I sealed them again with an oil/poly combo product recently). But I absolutely hear ya about being able to sand down and refinish over time.

    • @kiele21
      @kiele21 Год назад +69

      @REISSUED well, perhaps this is something that is not talked about enough. Part of the charm of butcher block is seeing it wear over time. If you want something to look pristine, stone is a better option. However, stone comes with its own set of challenges.
      Basically, it all comes down to the functionality of the material. Butcher block is called that because butchers used them for work table surfaces because it wouldn't dull their knives. Stone has been around just as long, but stone was used by bakers because it helped keep pastry dough cool. We still use marble rolling pins to roll out pastry today. Most materials in our kitchens have a historical precedent for its use, which was specific. Today, we choose things for their aesthetic value, and we've lost sight of their original context. So now materials end up having a kind of aesthetic currency, which equals social status. This is why keeping up with trends is so expensive and environmentally unsustainable. It's a game played by the bourgeoisie and as a kind of inside joke that the middle classes haven't been let in on.

    The kitchen is stunning! Subway tile is timeless: it will never go out of style.Butcher block is timeless: it will never go out of style. The checkerboard floor is timeless: it will never go out of style. And because the primary purpose of your open shelving is to bring art and plants into the space, and to have frequently used items readily at hand, they, too, are timeless.

      Subway will go out of style; it was out of style from the 1950s into at least the 1990s. But if I'm right about when his house was built (looks to be 100 years old or so; definitely pre-WWII, then subway tile was "in" when the house was built and therefore will never be inappropriate for this house. Just as it was never and never will be appropriate for a 1960s MCM house (no matter how many owners of such houses did the on-trend thing in the last 15 years or so).

      @@tuxedojunction9422 There is a difference between style and fashion. In some areas subway tile was out of fashion; however, a tour of any number of stately homes would have shown that it was never out of style. Moreover, it was often used in the 1960s, although usually in colors rather than white.

    Your kitchen is beautiful! It looks expensive and very thoughtful in design, but also very functional. I’m so tired of seeing “pretty kitchens” that would never stay that way on a daily basis in real life. You designed a functional, art worthy, kitchen and I LOVE your style! Maybe subway tile is no longer trendy, but that is a good thing in my opinion. Trendy eventually looks dated, while timeless design is… well… timeless! If you like your kitchen, who cares what Joanna Gaines or some RUclipsr says is going out of style. It's your kitchen and if you like it that's all that matters. It looks pretty classic to me, and I like the idea of a bookshelf on the countertop, that just solved a space issue that's been bugging us in our kitchen--definitely borrowing that one. Only thing I don't care for is the open shelves, not because they're in or out of style, but because grease and dust tends get everywhere no matter how good your hood vent is and anything out in the open ends up with that film on it.

      I think it's similar with fashion. When someone knows what works on them, what clothes fit their body and personality, what colours they feel best in, and develop a personal style, it's just small tweaks to not look dated (such as modifying hems, width of pantlegs, accessories, etc). Where with houses, everyone has colours they feel best with, design elements that make them feel at home, favourite items, and styles that they're drawn to. Those don't change as much, but perhaps what you have on the walls for decor, swapping out seasonal items, including trendy colours and patterns in the form of tablecloths, curtains, cushions and blankets... That makes it a lot easier than something like, whether or not open concept kitchens are in right now, or if your favourite colour is going to look dated.

      It’s really annoying this “trend” of people saying their style is “timeless” instead of trendy as if their style is beyond reproach. First, trends happen…get over it. You don’t have to follow the trends. Second, you’re not immune to trends. If you just redecorated and your style is now dated, that’s okay. My mom loves her Tuscan kitchen and doesn’t care about your opinion. She also has a wagon wheel chandelier and wood paneling. Visiting her house is like visiting a time capsule from the Wild West, fifties and late 90’s. “Timeless” is boring. You can’t tell when the renovation happened because it was NEVER in style. The OP’s kitchen is beautiful but it’s also very 2020’s. People weren’t doing any of this in any other era so it will eventually become dated just like the Colosseum in Greece.

    • @joeychen3946
      @joeychen3946 11 месяцев назад

      @@jeffbiddle1956 Mmm I'm really not sure I agree with what you shared (although I can definitely see your point) cuz I can see that same kitchen belonging in a home from a different era. But I am willing to concede that we may look at this kitchen 20 years later and feel it is dated. You could be right, I mean, who knows? I'm wondering whether a timeless kitchen is a bit like a timeless outfit e.g. a suit or a little black dress. It's still timeless-ish 20 years on, but it definitely still shows elements of being from a different era be it the size of the lapel or the rise of the neckline. My beef with interior design trends is that it seems to move so quickly...every quarter or every year there's sth new coming in and sth is now out of style. But there are some things that are a bit more classic e.g. wainscoting, but only if classic is your thing I guess. No shade on those who like retro stuff (if that's their jam) - they should just go for it. But I believe it's better to go for sth you really like or if not then sth timeless, rather than to just follow trends blindly.

We redid our bathroom in our 1990 "normal" house about 15 years ago. I took home a tile board from the shop that was "trendy" and would wow people when they saw it. It sat on the counter for several days while I tried to convince myself I liked it. We went back and chose the "splurge" Italian tile that caught my eye repeatedly (bright blue, overglazed with white). This was my master bath, not a showplace, and it brought me great peace and joy over the years. We moved last year and I really miss that tile!

    The materials, patterns, and colors used in this kitchen are timeless. Loved that you used a dresser for a kitchen island! Subway tiles have been around forever, if the tile was under upper cabinets I would say it will look dated but you took the tile to the ceiling which gives it a timeless higher-end look. It’s all about how the materials and colors are used. I love how you styled the kitchen. Most importantly the kitchen is functional, Amazing job! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Pay no attention to trends. A design is something that makes YOU feel comfortable, and reflects who you are. Form should not only follow function, but it should follow personality as well. Trends are the reflection of what you think others are expecting. Make a space uniquely YOU, and it will be a space in which you want to live and work and interact socially. If you absolutely love something that is not currently on trend, use it anyway.

    For years kitchen design RUclipsrs have been saying that open shelving is “out”. Yet on those same videos when they talk about an “in” trend, I noticed that some of those example photos also display open shelving. I love open shelving. I don’t want a row of cabinets around my kitchen. I also like subway tile. When I see it, I never look at it and think “oh no, subway tile”. It looks good. Love your kitchen! It looks cozy, like someone actually lives there and took the time to cultivate a space that reflected themselves. I think trends rely heavily on resale value and this “buyer” that most will never meet bc they’re designing their forever home. I feel like before fixer upper/pandemic there wasn’t really any “trends” that phased out within a year or 2. But now it’s a huge trend to change up your home every year/season. To me your space feel eclectic and efficient for what you need. And it will change when you need to accommodate it for other things. Anyway, 10/10! It doesn’t look dated.

    Crikey, don't doubt yourself on this, your kitchen is perfect for your house and timeless in my opinion. It reminds me of an old English tiled kitchen with new appliances and open shelves added. I think it's fabulous. People talk like dark blue or forest green were only invented in 2020 which is nonsense. I do agree with Kristen about the regrettable cheap grey flooring that all the builders and makeover shows used a while back but hey ho that's what rugs and peel and stick tiles are for 🙂

    I think it's inevitable for things to be quickly "out of fashion" but it's never possible for things to be "out of style." As I see it, style is a way of advertising your uniqueness and, as such, it tends not to change much. Fashion is mainly for people who don't know who they are.

    Your kitchen makes sense-fits you. It is pleasing to the eye, warm and functional. My kitchen started out blue but I just couldn’t get the right blue color 3 times. In the end I went all white with skinny white tile chevron backsplash, dark wood tile floors, white quartz countertop. My kitchen is very small with a low ceiling and not much counter space. There are 4 long/ large windows take up an entire wall across from the cooking/ counters/ prep area/ sink etc. The laundry room next to my kitchen has been turned into an extension of the kitchen to provide additional cabinets and countertop space. The laundry room has been relocated inside a closet in the back of the garage. Trends can help us find what we like, we don’t have to change to new trends- we like what we like - as long as it makes you happy. I actually like white cabinets and my plants help warm up the space.

Your kitchen looks fresh and current, yet feels like it's been there all along. The choices you made look smart and who wouldn't love the appliances you chose?

    This is my first time watching one of your videos - great content and I totally agree with your rant and “trend” discussion! Thank you for bringing this up! I clicked on your video because we are in the middle of being “forced” to redo our entire kitchen due to a frozen water pipe flood and we had just done a light reno about five years ago and loved the results but some of our choices would be considered “dated” by today’s standards. However, since insurance is paying for the reinstall, and some of our surfaces were salvaged, it’s a decision between going all new (at our expense) or reinstall what we had, which we liked but might not be “of the moment.” Your video helped me decide that our choice to reinstall what speaks to us (we are not reselling any time soon) is the right choice! And I love your kitchen choices (even though open shelves wouldn’t work for me - they are beautiful but I don’t have the patience to keep them looking good and I definitely need the storage) - beautiful job and so patient with all the challenges of renovating an old house!

      I hear ya! My recommendation (both as an artist and as a former realtor) is to go with finishes that suit the style of your home and make the best use of your space. There is nothing weirder than seeing a mid level suburban house trying really hard to be a “farmhouse” or a 70s ranch pretending to be a cute cottage haha. I think keep any tile or countertops pretty classic and get more personal with color - paint is always an easy change! I also found that mixing metals was a good choice - I have chrome, brass, copper, and stainless - could have gone very wrong haha. But going all in on one metal tone can date the house down the line.

    Your reflections about trends in general is spot on. When it comes to both interior and fashion you should always go for style in stead of trends. Individual style is never out of fashion. Develop and trust ones individual style and _then_ choose trend objects if one must to keep the style fresh, but trend objects should be budget friendly stuff that one easily can switch out. With interior I choose pieces that I think I can live with and love in 10 years, and have that time perspective regarding durability as well in mind when I buy something. For clothes I have a 5 year perspective. I have been an adult for 25 years, and most of my stuff is things I love more and more and that have never felt outdated.

    The chunky floating shelves/not having upper cabinets is what's going to date this the most, to be honest, followed by the non-square floor tile and the range hood. My recommendations for avoiding trends is to study kitchens of the time period your house was built. Then it will always fit the house. (Yes, this includes the 1980s). There's really no reason you couldn't have used upper cabinets with the tall ceilings. There's no rule that says they have to go to the ceiling, especially when there's 3+ feet of space above them.

      I agree with you about using trends as a source of inspiration! I love jumping on Pinterest and getting ideas! But I always check back in with what I love and what suits my space. Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a kind comment ❤️❤️❤️

    Your kitchen is stunning and so definitely a personal spaced obviously designed by someone who has made it for his needs. It is beautifully styled that cannot be labeled "trendy". The floor, subway tile, butcher block counter tops are not trendy...they are CLASSIC and look beautiful in your home. I just stumbled on to this video and you have done a remarkable job making this kitchen yours!!!

    I love your kitchen !!! It is so very beautiful and functional. I do not pay attention to trends. I fill my house with things that I love. It doesn’t matter to me if it is in style or not…
    Plus, if you wait long enough everything will come back into style 😂
